“El médico no sana, es una guía”
Si te acuestas en la camilla o te acomodas en la silla de su escritorio verás la pintura de “El doctor” de Luke Fildes que adorna su consultorio. Cada vez que entro a este espacio inevitablemente veo una historia que se cuenta por si sola: el doctor pensante e iluminado versus los padres angustiados y oscuros. Al preguntarle cuales son los pilares que todo doctor debería seguir me señala “mantener el arte [de la medicina], mantener el respeto hacia el paciente y aceptar las limitaciones como profesional”. Y dice que sólo sus pacientes lo podrán juzgar.
Muchos médicos prefieren mantener muros entre ellos y sus pacientes, evitan relacionarse o tener empatía hacia ellos. No todos reconocen la importancia de una salud integral. Pero a Juan Diego, la vida le ha enseñó lo contrario.
Su familia y el encuentro con la vocación
Nació en Mérida -la capital del estado de Yucatán en México- y es hijo de un ingeniero industrial mexicano y una enfermera ecuatoriana. A los pocos años de vida, deja las playas de uno de sus lugares favoritos en el mundo y se cría entre Guayaquil y Quito. A pesar de eso y de que ahora vive en la capital, no se reconoce como ecuatoriano. “Me considero más que ecuatoriano, mexicano, hispanoamericano”, admite.
Describe a su madre como “una mujer dura de carácter, criadora fuerte, a la antigua”. En cambio, recuerda a su padre como un ser “maravilloso” que “resolvía todo conversando, como todo yucateco”, dice.
Justamente fue su padre quien lo llevó a especializarse en la medicina integral. Cuando apenas era un estudiante de la carrera, a los 21 años, su padre sufrió de un accidente en su fábrica y como producto de la diabetes, los médicos le recomendaron no trabajar más. Para un hombre que ama su trabajo, eso es una sentencia. Una sentencia que le generaría una fuerte depresión y que más tarde lo llevaría a sufrir de un cuadro de diabetes, que junto con un “mal manejo hospitalario” le causarían una insuficiencia cardiaca y con eso su muerte.
Con la muerte de su padre, Juan Diego entendió la importancia de ver más allá de los síntomas. La importancia de “ver en los pacientes a su ser integral. Verlos como un entorno psicológico, biológico y ambiental”, admite. Juan Diego reconoce que, si a su padre se le hubiera tratado la depresión no hubiera fallecido de esa forma.
Ahora que él es padre y tiene su propia familia, ha desarrollado otro nivel de empatía y cercanía con sus pacientes padres y madres. A su hijo lo describe como un “tremendo maestro” y al igual que cuando habla de su padre, se vuelve una mezcla de emociones. Dice que su padre e hijo son muy similares. Comparten los mismos gustos por los autos y las máquinas. A lo que le respondo que puede ser una reencarnación. El responde que es posible.
La pasión por la medicina lo acompañó desde pequeño. “Habían dos cosas que me fascinaban desde chiquito, las máquinas y la medicina”, cuenta. “Jugaba a que era el médico y les revisaba a los peluches, a los animales, a mis familiares. Siempre me encantó. Parecía que lo llevaba en la sangre”, dice.
El “doctorcito” y amigo
Muchos de sus pacientes lo ven como su amigo y con cariño, los más mayores, le dicen “el doctorcito”. Para mi mamá y para mí, Juan Diego también es su amigo. Y no podría ser menos que eso alguien a quien le confías gran parte de tu salud y bienestar.
Mi mamá y yo tenemos enfermedades autoinmunes. En nuestro camino por saber la causa de nuestros dolores y por recomendación de mi tía, llegamos al consultorio de Juan Diego.
Para mi mamá fue un “alivio” encontrarle al doctor. Otra de sus pacientes, Mayra, afirma, “él trata las enfermedades desde la raíz o [identifica] emociones que puedan o hayan ocasionado la enfermedad y eso no lo hacen todos”.
“Entrega a sus pacientes toda su atención y presencia, busca que ellos logren encontrarse consigo mismos y en su interior, aquello que necesitan sanar”, comenta su esposa, Thalía. When President Muhammadu Buhari who campaigned vigorously using the anti-corruption fight as a strategy came to power in 2015, he promised to "kill corruption" completely, one of the most pressing problems facing Nigeria. He quickly launched an anti-corruption campaign, arresting, prosecuting, and persecuting some selected high-profile individuals, mostly members of the opposition party, and allegedly recovering billions of dollars in stolen funds yet to be accounted for.
However, eight years down the line, there is little or no evidence that Buhari's war on corruption has had any real impact. Corruption remains very rampant indices in Nigeria's political history. Some critics argue that Buhari in himself is fantastically corrupt and does not have the political will to fight corruption. they point to the fact that he has not been willing to prosecute some of his allies who have been accused of corruption.
Barely 5 months after the earlier renovation of Aso Rock Presidential Villa in 2014/15, President Buhari upon inception of office Budgeted 3.5B for the renovation of the aforementioned project. Before the election of President Buhari in 2015, he promised to make his assets declaration public but breached the promise he publicly made to the Nigerian people.

In 2019, the government borrowed $2.5 billion from the World Bank to finance various development projects, and Nigerians are yet looking out to find where these projects were situated. In 2020, the government secured a $1.5 billion loan from the World Bank to support the country's economic recovery efforts amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In April 2021, the Nigerian government received approval from the World Bank for a $1.5 billion loan to support the country's economic recovery efforts amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
In August 2021, the Nigerian government received approval from the National Assembly to borrow $4 billion from external sources to fund infrastructural projects in the country.
It is important to note that some of these loans were taken for specific projects, and the Nigerian government has never been transparent in its borrowing and loan repayment processes which is an aberration to some constitutional provisions and the monies borrowed so far can't be juxtaposed side by side with the number of projects on the ground.

In all, there are several reasons why Buhari's anti-corruption campaign has failed.
First, the campaign has been characterized by a lack of accountability and openness. There have been claims of corruption inside the anti-corruption agency itself, and Buhari has refused to disclose information about the sums that have been recovered.
The campaign has also been picky. Buhari has concentrated his attention on his political rivals while disregarding corruption allegations implicating his allies. Additionally, inside his political sphere, President Buhari oversaw the worst election ever held in Nigeria, which was overseen by Professor Mahmud and INEC.
Third, the campaign has been ineffective. Many of the high-profile officials who have been arrested have been acquitted or have had their cases dismissed. And even when convictions have been secured, the sentences have been light.
As a result of these failures, Buhari's anti-corruption campaign has lost public trust. A recent poll found that only 15% of Nigerians believe that Buhari is doing a good job of fighting corruption, whereas the rest believe otherwise.
The failure of Buhari's anti-corruption campaign is a major setback for Nigeria. Corruption is a major obstacle to development, and it is one of the main reasons why Nigeria remains the world's poverty capital with over 133 million Nigerians living below the poverty line.

Until these things are done, Buhari's war on corruption will continue to fail even as he has less than a week to go.
