Democratic Forum mourns H.E Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings.
It was with heavy hearts and pensive mood when we received the ever shocking news of the sudden demise of H.E Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings.
Until his transition, President Rawlings was the Chairman of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), became Chairman of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) in 1981, founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and was the first President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
He goes down in memory as someone who fought endlessly for social justice and the principles of probity and accountability. As a Pan-Africanist who believed in the African project of reuniting and liberating the continent from the shackles of imperialism and oppression, he stood and fought for those principles to the latter.
All of us at the Democratic Forum, a non profit institution that's focused on championing the cause of quality but affordable education, youth development and good healthcare delivery, sends our most heartfelt condolences to the former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, the immediate family, former workers, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the good people of Ghana and the entire world.
Indeed, we shall never forget his immense contributions to the cause of Ghana, Africa, and the World. His words and actions should be immortalized.
Ghana has lost a hero!
Rest in eternal glory Papa, until our final journey to our eternal destination.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s Electrifying Speech, Inspirational, Lucid and Heartwarming - Voice of Women.
Throughout history, the central role of women in society has ensured the stability, progress and long-term development of nations. In today’s world, women with their ambitions, intelligence and strength have proved that the word “competence ” has nothing in common with their gender.
In the global struggle to get more women into high political office, Former President John Mahama and the NDC have shown a shining example by this wonderful nomination and has indeed respected women. Leadership is about character and substance and Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang depicts that and even more.
27th July, 2020 will go into annals of history as one of the brightest days in our country’s political history. A day one of the major political parties outdoored it’s Vice Presidential candidate who happened to be woman, not just a woman, but a woman of great attributes, a well distinguished public servant, astute, calm , decent and visionary. I was amazingly proud to watch her eloquently deliver her first major maiden public speech to the nation,her oratory,depth ,demeanor and delivery was impressive.
Women have been notably in fewer numbers in the executive branch of government. The gender gap has been closing, however, albeit slowly, and we are still underrepresented.Politics is a "matrix of domination" designed by race, class, gender and sexuality.But it is trite knowledge that the political participation of women have always resulted in tangible gains for our democracy, greater responsiveness to the needs of citizens , unity and inclusiveness.
One of the many profound statements I took from her impeccable address was when she said “What really matters is not to be the first through the door but to hold the door for those behind you". This was not only inspiring , but fulfilling. A clear intention and vision to support women empowerment and make available opportunities for us all. All over the world, participation of women in formal politics has been low compared to men. Gender inequality within families, inequitable division of labor within households, cultural attitudes about gender roles further subjugate women and limit our representation in public life. Our interest and empowerment as women have been under-presented because our society is highly patriarchal.
Kofi Annan noted, “study after study has taught us, there is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women. This buttresses the relevance of our women and their impact to the development of our nation.Women’s participation in politics helps advance gender equality and affects both the range of policy issues that get considered and the types of solutions that are proposed. Research indicates that whether a legislator is male or female has a distinct impact on their policy priorities. There is also strong evidence that as more women are elected to office, there is a corollary increase in policy making that emphasizes quality of life and reflects the priorities of families, women, and ethnic and racial minorities.
As a woman myself and an advocate for women empowerment over the years working hard to support my fellow women and the girl child through my foundation and philanthropic activities, I have no shred of doubt about the competencies and relevance of women to nation building and development. I am highly elated by this new path that has lightened up our political landscape. Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang brings freshness, maturity and decency to our body politics. In her we have a passionate, honest and competent mother, scholar, and Vice President for Ghana. I am happy to be part of history by registering and voting for the NDC.

The Democratic Forum has noticed with heavy hearts the recent developments over Ghanaian citizens especially students trapped in China as a result of the deadly Coronavirus outbreak.
As an institution we share in the pain of those who have been affected by the virus and to the families who have lost loved ones as a result...
The outbreak of the Coronavirus has become a global tragedy that the world is combating, searching for a lastful solution to curb the menace...
Currently over 40,000 individuals are said to have been infected by the virus with 1,016 lives loss with China alone recording 811 loses.
Subsequently, many countries have looked out for possible means of evacuating their citizens from China.
Even though we commend and appreciate the efforts of the government of Ghana through the Health Ministry for the steps taken to preventing the entry of the Coronavirus into the country.
Invariably however, Democratic Forum calls on the Media to launch and intensify a campaign to draw the attention of the government to the challenges our brothers and sisters are facing in China.
The government's loud silence over this issue has become very alarming which sends a message of betrayal to citizens out there.
The situation keeps escalating each and everyday since there has not been any immediate positive response from the government.
As we speak, students are trapped and are not allowed any movement within their province.. Even the Ghanaian Consulate in China is not ready to receive them or whatsoever.
We believe that while government is thinking of possible management centers for emergency cases it should equally be interested in the lives of Ghanaians in China by;
1. Sending relief items such as food and water for trapped citizens especially students since they are not permitted movement and are afraid of getting food or water within their provinces.
2. To find an immediate means of evacuating them back to the country and quarantine them for the respective period of time required.
3. To relocate/evacuate them from the infested zone of Wuhan province to a more safer province where they will be safer psychological and emotionally.
We are however informed by a speculative position of government that the country is not prepared adequately enough to receive its citizens from China should there be any emergency case. We want to remind the government that this should not take the good sight of the fact that there are lives at stake out there and the earlier an immediate action is taken the better.
If the issue is about funding for the evacuation, relief items or relocation, Democratic Forum is poised and ready to lead a national fund raising campaign to raise adequate funds to support the government of Ghana to pursuing such a worthy cause to the latter.
The media has launched several campaigns such us #Fight Against Galamsey, #War Against Indiscipline #Fight Against Corruption and many others which have yielded positive results in the recent past.
We are therefore more than convinced that the media would once again be able to launch a campaign to champion the cause of ensuring that our brothers and sisters are safe and healthy in China.
May God continue to bless our Homeland Ghana and make us great and strong!!!
