For some reason I have an itch to add my voice to the conversation on the legalization of cannabis in Ghana and I have been medicating it with excuses. I take it for granted that if the government wants to set up a committtee to look into the use of weed I would be drafted for I am among the few preachers who have addressed it wholistically.
From "Weed and spiritual formation", "Everything is better than boredom", "Christ on drugs", "Why saying NO is not enough", "Blow me a smoke babe", "Wee is much better than alcohol", and "Hallelujah to the Aya Man" I have written on many platforms and addressed to all kinds of people on the international herb so why write another post? To my shame I am a caffaine addict so I do think of other addictive substances and the beautiful people who use them.
I would like to start this really short note with an unlikely scriptural verse, SoS 4:10: "how beautiful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much better is your love than wine, the fragrance of your perfumes than all kinds of spices!" Such an awesome declaration of love. But you may ask what this has to do with the conversation on weed? Nothing really unless you are in love with weed.
Song of Solomon was written by a man obsessed with the acquisition of knowledge.
Even at a young age, Solomon, king of Israel had a love for wisdom. When he was granted an audience with God he asked for wisdom and his entire life is a testament to his pursuit of knowledge. Take a casual look at the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastics to know what value he placed on the twin virtues of wisdom and knowledge - he went to great lengths to acquire both. Then one day in walks a woman - like the sun appearing after a stormy night.
There is something more excellent than wisdom, who would have quessed! So there is something more excellent than the buzz of a high. Love is more excellent than the next drag; love is more excellent than the next high; love is more excellent than the roll; and love is more excellent than the weed. That is my humble submission and I too have the Spirit of Christ (I'm also not above a little boasting, obviously).
What sort of love can be this excellent? The love of God revealed in Christ is more excellent than anything this world or the heavens can give. I have never been one to call something sin unless I can prove from the Bible that it is so but as long as the laws of the land considers some trading and use of cannabis a crime I too would have to tread softly and some how also call the recreational use of it a sin.
Wee can be addictive and life is best lived in freedom. All addictions are suicidal be it an addiction to something like alcohol or addiction to something like prayer. Alcohol takes your life and makes you into another person. Prayer takes your life and makes you into another person. Who is to say which addiction is best for you!
Yet, I am propagating a new addiction - addiction to the love of Christ - because only that addiction makes a man totally free to live. Christ is the spirit and where the Spirit of Christ is, there is liberty (2 Cor 3:17). In 2 Corinthians 4:15, Paul talks of the constraints of the love of Chrost so we nees to ask what this love is. Most reading this know what the love of Christ did for all yet I will remind you agai - He gave Himself to death that we who live should no longer be slaves to sin but might ascend again to God's glorious nature and have communion with the Father.
God is love and if someone loves God he is known by God (1 Cor 8:3) because "if a man loves me [Christ], he will keep my word: And My Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him." (John 14:23)
So what is this love of Christ which is more excellent than weed? That is a question you need to answer for yourself if you are to take a biblical position on the weed conversation or any other conversation for that matter.
What I can say about the love of Christ is it grows on you and nothing else compares to it. I leave you with a scriptural prayer to aid you in knowing that which is better than weed - "may you be able to know how wide, how long, how deep and how high is the love of Christ" (Ephesians 3:18).
