Shenzhou-12: China launches first astronauts to new space station

Spacecraft lifted off about 01:22 GMT on Thursday from northwest China further boosting the country’s space programme to rival the US.

China has successfully launched the Shenzhou-12 – its first manned mission in five years – further accelerating its space programme to rival the United States.

Shenzhou-12, meaning “Divine Vessel”, lifted off at about 01:22 GMT on Thursday from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China, according to the live video broadcast on state television, CCTV. The spacecraft docked with the country’s space station Thursday afternoon, China’s space agency said, around seven hours after blasting off.

The Shenzhou-12 craft “successfully docked with the forward port of the core module” of the Tiangong station, according to a statement from the China Manned Space Agency.

The launch was carried with a Long March-2F carrier rocket.

The spacecraft carried three male astronauts – Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo.

In the CCTV live video, two of the three astronauts made an “OK” hand gesture as Shenzhou crossed the Earth’s atmosphere and following the critical separation of the four boosters.

“The flight was perfectly smooth,” Chen Shanguang, deputy director of China’s manned space programme, was quoted by news reports as saying.“This is the first step. There are many challenges ahead.”

After entering orbit, the spaceship will conduct a fast automated “rendezvous and docking with the in-orbit space station core module Tianhe”, according to CCTV.

The astronauts will be stationed in the core module and remain in orbit for three months.

Major space power by 2030

State-owned Global Times publication quoted Gao Xu, deputy director designer of the Shenzhou-12, as saying that the development of the manned spacecraft followed “the highest standards in the country’s space industry.”

The Shenzhou-12 is made up of three sections – an orbiter module, a return module and a propelling module, and has 14 sub-systems onboard.

In the Global Times interview, Gao referred to the spacecraft as a “vessel of life”, as it will not only ferry the three astronauts to the orbiting Tianhe core module, but is also expected to carry them home to Earth in approximately 90 days.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Jonti Horner, a space expert from Australia’s University of Southern Queensland, said that the advances being made by China’s programme is “incredible”.

China’s last crewed flight mission was in 2016 when two men – Chen Dong and Jing Haipeng – were sent via the Shenzhou-11 spacecraft to Tiangong-2, a prototype of the space station where they later stayed for about a month.

Beijing’s aim is for the country to become a major spacefaring power by 2030, turning space into the newest frontier of its rivalry with the United States.

'Wonder material' used to detect SARS-CoV-2 virus in laboratory experiments.

Researchers at the University of Illinois Chicago have successfully used graphene -- one of the strongest, thinnest known materials -- to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus in laboratory experiments. The researchers say the discovery could be a breakthrough in coronavirus detection, with potential applications in the fight against COVID-19 and its variants.

In experiments, researchers combined sheets of graphene, which are more than 1,000 times thinner than a postage stamp, with an antibody designed to target the infamous spike protein on the coronavirus. They then measured the atomic-level vibrations of these graphene sheets when exposed to COVID-positive and COVID-negative samples in artificial saliva. These sheets were also tested in the presence of other coronaviruses, like Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS-CoV.

The UIC researchers found that the vibrations of the antibody-coupled graphene sheet changed when treated with a COVID-positive sample, but not when treated with a COVID-negative sample or with other coronaviruses. Vibrational changes, measured with a device called a Raman spectrometer, were evident in under five minutes.

Their findings are published in the journal ACS Nano.

We have been developing graphene sensors for many years. In the past, we have built detectors for cancer cells and ALS. It is hard to imagine a more pressing application than to help stem the spread of the current pandemic. There is a clear need in society for better ways to quickly and accurately detect COVID and its variants, and this research has the potential to make a real difference. The modified sensor is highly sensitive and selective for COVID, and it is fast and inexpensive."

Vikas Berry, professor and head of chemical engineering at the UIC College of Engineering and senior author of the paper

"This project has been an amazingly novel response to the need and demand for detection of viruses, quickly and accurately," said study co-author Garrett Lindemann, a researcher with Carbon Advanced Materials and Products, or CAMP. "The development of this technology as a clinical testing device has many advantages over the currently deployed and used tests."

Berry says that graphene -- which has been called a "wonder material" -- has unique properties that make it highly versatile, making this type of sensor possible.

Graphene is a single-atom-thick material made up of carbon. Carbon atoms are bound by chemical bonds whose elasticity and movement can produce resonant vibrations, also known as phonons, which can be very accurately measured. When a molecule like a SARS-CoV-2 molecule interacts with graphene, it changes these resonant vibrations in a very specific and quantifiable way.

"Graphene is just one atom thick, so a molecule on its surface is relatively enormous and can produce a specific change in its electronic energy," Berry said. "In this experiment, we modified graphene with an antibody and, in essence, calibrated it to react only with the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Using this method, graphene could similarly be used to detect COVID-19 variants."

The researchers say the potential applications for a graphene atomic-level sensor -- from detecting COVID to ALS to cancer -- continue to expand.

A provisional patent has been submitted based on this work.

Treating

pain

with hot and cold

compress

has been an old tradition in India and is recommended by doctors. These methods can be extremely helpful in controlling pain, inflammation, swelling and stiffness and is an effective and affordable way to treat any type of pain and injury. The tricky part is knowing which compress (hot or cold) to use in what type of situation. The basic rule of thumb is to use a hot compress on chronic muscle pain and stiffness and use a cold compress on inflammation and swelling. Doctors can prescribe a combination of the two therapies depending on your injury.

Let’s learn about each therapy in detail and know when to use it.

Heat therapy or

thermotherapy

Applying heat to an injured area promotes blood flow and increases circulation, even a slightly high temperature can soothe the pain and discomfort and increase muscle flexibility. Heat therapy is ideally used in chronic pain, joint pains and stiffness. It is advised to take a hot shower before doing any physical activity as it relaxes the muscles. Heat therapy should not be applied to acute injuries with inflammation as it is caused by bleeding in the tissue, allowing heat to the injured area will increase the blood flow thus, worsening the situation. Heat therapy should be applied in the following situations:

  • Strains
  • Sprains
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Chronic irritation and stiffness in the tendons
  • Warming up stiff muscles or tissue before activity
  • Relieving pain in case of neck or back injury, including the lower back

Types of Heat Therapy

There are different ways to apply a cold compress to an injured area. Those include:

  • Cryotherapy products: This includes products like ice packs, coolant sprays and ice massage
  • Cryo stretching: In this case, we use cold temperature to reduce muscle spasms during stretching
  • Cryokinetics: This type of therapy combines cold treatment and active exercise. It is a useful tool in case of ligament sprains
  • Ice baths: This is another form of cryotherapy

For better results, apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the injured area several times a day for short periods of time. You should never apply ice for more than 20 minutes as it can damage the nerve, skin and tissues. People with heart disease should consult a doctor before applying a cold compress. If cold therapy did not work within 48 hours, consult a doctor.

OPEN BOOK EXAMINATION A RELIEF OR STILL A TASK TO PERFORM ? :

Recently, Many universities have conducted open book examination due to Covid-19 for final year students. I was also one of the one who gave the same.

What does it means?

Under open book examination the students would be able to refer books notes and other study material while answering questions.

PROCEDURE FOLLOWED WHILE TAKING EXAMS:

Also, due to spread of covid- 19 universities took this examination by way of sending question papers before 15 minutes of the prescribed time for competing papers, where students have to fill maximum 20 sheets at their home or in any place where they can concentrate or in any safe environment. Our university has give a time span of 2 hours where we have to attempt 4 questions out of 8 and each question carried 20 marks. After completion of the prescribed period of 2 hours students have to submit their sheets in a form of Pdf to a prescribed email as provided by the university. No webcams were used in the hole process.

What are the Pros and Cons of OBE ?

Pros

  • Minimises burden on the students -

As, you can take help of books or other study materials while paper is ongoing so it proves to be less burdened on students.

  • It saves papers, saving paper means saving trees-

As a set of 10 sheets were used for the completion of each exams so indirectly also saves papers.

  • Safest mode -

Due to corona virus outbreak, too much gathering could be an outcome of its spread, so it is one of the safest mode.

Cons

  • Can’t keep check on students -

One can’t be sure if the students has got somebody’s back.

  • No time to check where is the answer-

Readily material has to be there while giving exams as there is no time for ripping pages and finding the answer. It will good for the students if they prepare notes before appearing for exams.

  • Good network is still an issue in most areas -

Half an hour is given to drop to the prescribed emails but bad network cause failures to many attempts.

How to crack open book exams?

  1. Knowledge: a solid understanding of the course content.
  2. Systems: organized notes and a systematic way to find content quickly.
  3. Academic integrity: make sure your work is your own – otherwise it’s not your success
  4. Timing: The most important component! Plan the time you have per question based on grade/weighting and total time allocated. Check your pace and skip ahead if you need to.
  5. Reading the question : understand the question what are they asking, identify key words in the question.

Presently, due to advancement of medical science it can be seen that existence of people on earth is increasing drastically. Some people believe that because of the time the people live is expanding, their retirement age should be raised considerably while others contradict this statement. This essay will discuss why the period at which one retires should be strictly increased.

The first reason is that with grown retirement age, senior citizens will no longer be the burden for their families;means they will no longer be dependent on their wards. Furthermore, they will also aid the income of house. With this, the number of old age homes will also be reduced. Moreover, there will also be a huge upliftment in economy of the nation as there will be more workforce to perform tasks more precisely and accurately. As a result, it can be said that old people should not stop working with respect to their age as they have adequate experience, knowledge and skills.

On the contrary, it is true that elderly people usually lose their strength and understanding that they had in their younger age. As a result, they find a problem more difficult than youth. Finally, it will also not be wrong to say that they spend their whole life to make their children achieve something high in their life. So, it is their right to hope from their offsprings to obey them and all the comforts of life they dreamed about .Thus, it shows that it is not necessary for an older person to earn living for the family at this stage of life.

To conclude, I would say that it is one's own decision whether he/she wants to continue his /her job after getting aged or not. In the end, it can be said that one should have a youthful spirit inspite of being old.
