Woman among 5 arrested in Bengaluru for torture and rape in viral video.

Yatindrapanda - Bengaluru: Five people were arrested for allegedly raping a woman, torturing her and recording the assault, Bengaluru police said late on Thursday evening. The arrests were made hours after Assam Police shared visuals from a video circulating on social media to trace the accused. Union minister Kiren Rijiju followed up, asking the police of all states and Union territories to chip in.

The five - one of them is a woman - were arrested on the basis of leads on the accused by the Assam police.-Based on a video clip, wherein one woman was subjected to physical abuse and tortured by a group of people, five culprits including a woman, visible in the clip were immediately traced and secured by Bengaluru City Police,” a statement by Bengaluru Police said.

“On the basis of the contents of the video clip and facts as disclosed during preliminary interrogation of the secured persons, a case of rape, assault and under other relevant provisions of law has been registered against the accused in Ramamurthy Nagar Police Station,” the statement added.

Police believe that both the accused and victim were residents of Bangladesh.

“As per the information revealed so far, all of them are part of the same group and believed to be from Bangladesh. Due to financial disputes, the culprits brutalized the victim, who is also said to be a Bangladeshi, brought to India for human trafficking. The investigation is being carried out in full earnestness under the close supervision of senior officers,” Kamal Pant, Bengaluru police commissioner, said.

Mahavinayak Temple is the oldest Hindu temple of Lord Ganesha in Odisha. It is located in Chandikhole of Jajpur district. The specialty of this temple is that the five Gods (Shiva, Vishnu, Durga, Sun and Ganesha) are worshiped as one deity in a single Garbhagriha. Lord Ganesha's other name is Binayak. For this the temple name is Mahavinayak. But this place is popularly known as a Shiva Khestra. This temple is also called as Shri Shri Mahavinayak Shaiv Peeth.

History and Architecture

This temple was constructed by the kings of the Keshari Dynasty of Odisha during the 12th century. The temple is made up of double-colored bricks- red and yellow.

The wife of Kamadev, Rati Devi is worshiped here to the release of her husband from the curse of Lord Shiva. While she was praying to Lord Ganesh, five hands simultaneously stretched out towards her to receive her offering, putting her in a dilemma. She then prayed to Bramha who clarified that the five Gods, Ganesh, Sun, Vishnu, Shiva, and Durga had been pleased with her prayer and simultaneously stretched their hands to receive her offering. Kamadev was released thereafter, and that day a large granite stone emerged from the earth, containing the divine power of the five gods. During the Mahabharat battle, mother Kunti also offered Golden Champa flower to Lord Shiva from this place for the victory of her sons.

Specialty

Mahavinayak enshrines the five godheads in one Lingam. The special of Mahavinayak temple is that the five Gods Shiva, Vishnu, Durga, Sun and Ganesha are worshiped as one deity in a single Garbhagriha. A few years back a new beautiful Hanuman temple has been constructed near to the entrance of Mahavinayak temple. This is the latest attraction added to the already famous tourist location.

Puja and Festivals

Festivals such as Maha Shivratri, Makar Sankranti, and Raja are celebrated here. Maha Shivratri is celebrated for five days with Yagna and Homa every year. In the month of Shravan, especially on Shravan somvar Shiva devotees offer holy river water to fulfill their wishes.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Anil Kumar was transferred on Saturday and replaced by Manjunath Prasad who was the Principal Secretary of Revenue Department. Anil Kumar has been shunted out amid a spike in COVID-19 cases in Bengaluru.

Anil Kumar was appointed as BBMP Commissioner in August 2019 replacing Manjunath Prasad. Now Anil Kumar has been posted as Additional Chief Secretary in the Department of Public Enterprises. Manjunath Prasad remains in concurrent charge as Principal Secretary of Revenue Department and BBMP.

The city is currently under lockdown till 5 am on July 22 and Anil Kumar had contradicted Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa's contention that the lockdown should not be extended in the city.

Sources told TNM that Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa was unhappy with Anil Kumar about corruption allegations made against BBMP officials while managing the COVID-19 crisis.

Manjunath Prasad is no stranger to the role of BBMP Commissioner having held the post twice previously. A 1994 batch IAS officer, he previously served as BBMP Commissioner for more than two years after he was appointed in April 2016.

He was abruptly transferred out of his post in May 2018 after an order passed by the Election Commission of India (ECI). He was reinstated two months later and replaced by Anil Kumar in 2019. During the COVID-19 crisis, Manjunath Prasad was appointed as the nodal officer for interstate travel from Karnataka. He was tasked with managing the large number of migrant workers leaving the state to their hometowns.

He was criticised for the decision to suspend trains for the passage of migrant workers on May 5. The decision was reversed on May 7 after thousands of migrant workers began walking home. A sharp spike in COVID-19 cases were reported in Bengaluru at the end of June. Two weeks later, the city was placed under a fresh lockdown from July 14 to 22. There are currently 6,010 containment zones in Bengaluru after the city's civic body added 412 new containment zones on Friday.

Bengaluru is currently grappling with 20,623 active COVID-19 cases and has reported 582 COVID-19 deaths so far.

Bhubaneswar: With 401 COVID-19 patients recovering from the disease on Thursday, the total recovered cases in Odisha have crossed 7400-mark. It’s the highest single-day recovery in the state till date.

According to the Health & Family Welfare department, the highest 100 patients recovered in Ganjam district on the day, followed by 67 in Gajapati, 42 in Cuttack, 32 in Jajpur, 19 in Deogarh, 18 in Koraput, 15 in Khurda, 14 in Bargarh, 14 in Bhadrak, 12 in Balasore, 10 in Keonjhar and 10 in Malkangiri districts.

The number of recovered patients in other districts is as follows:

9 from Jagatsinghpur

7 each from Jharsuguda and Mayurbhanj

6 from Kandhamal

5 each from Nayagarh and Sambalpur

4 from Nabarangpur

3 from Kendrapara

2 from Dhenkanal

The total number of recovered cases from COVID-19 now stands at 7,407.

Meanwhile, the total COVID-19 tally went up to 11,201 after the state recorded its highest single-day spike of 577 new coronavirus cases reported from 22 districts.

Four persons succumbed to the disease including three in Ganjam district and one in Bhadrak, taking the toll to 52.
