Mental Health Policy

In our country mental health care in secured to every person by law. Indian mental health legislation, as per a 2017 study, meets 68% (119/175) of the World Health Organization (WHO) standards laid down in the WHO Checklist of Mental Health Legislation. However, human resources and expertise in the field of mental health in India is significantly low when compared to the population of the country. The allocation of the national healthcare budget to mental health is also low, standing at 0.16%. India's mental health policy was released in 2014. (Ref. from WHO website). But still people don’t know anything about it. Most people are only knowing about the physical health. As physical health is most noticeable people take care of it more. Also, people didn’t give much attention towards mental health as they were thinking it is not as dangerous as physical health. But we need to make awareness of the mental health now. During pandemic a lot of people suffered from trauma, depression, stress and many other mental problems. This pandemic was the one thing that highlighted the mental problems. Even a simple working person can have a mental illness. The only difference is they don’t give much thought about their mental fitness. People have many awareness programs for physical fitness and how strong it will make us. At that time no one says anything about the mental fitness. In fact, some people don’t know the difference between physical health care and mental health care.

I did a survey on people living in the urban area. The survey I did was on 50 people randomly. They were business men, servicemen, government job people etc. in that 60% people know the difference other 40% people are either confused or don’t know the difference between mental and physical health. In this survey I asked questionnaires about mental health care of the people. After going through the responses, I got to know people are facing depression, trauma, post-traumatic disorder, anxiety disorder, eating disorder. Some were facing these problems before even the start of pandemic, while some started having problems during pandemic. Now how we can solve these problems?

There are many medical centers where mental health facilities are given. Therapy sessions are arranged in these centers. Counsellors can help the patients who have gone through traumatic events, clinical psychologists can diagnose patients who are suffering from disorders. Although many centers are there, people still have problem in attending the center. The main reason found was that middle-class and lower-class people can’t afford enough to attend all therapy sessions and can’t get all medications for their disorder. The medicines are a lot expensive and the therapy sessions are also a little more costly for them to afford. These all made me think about that having a mental health insurance will have helped a lot of people during this pandemic. Mental health insurance would have helped them in their hard times when they were suffering from trauma, anxiety, panic attacks and many more. It has been seen that there is no policy that can be helpful for mental health problem. The only policy available is health policy which is helping us only physical. Because of all of these a small mental health policy is made by me
