In order to amplify their motives and intellection, they required someone who can extract their cogitation and code it into a digital rostrum. That is how they discovered an equally enthusiastic Anmol Kapoor, who is an android and iOS developer. He is a final year BTech student at BML Munjal University and lives in Kanpur. Malnutrition is something that we have all probably heard about, but only a few know what it is as they are the ones who are experiencing it.

Now, what is malnutrition, it's the lack of sufficient nutrition in the body. Even though the two types of malnutrition are undernutrition and over-nutrition. Undernutrition is the primary focus for us because it's something we can help prevent as a society, whereas overnutrition can be treated by dietary adjustments on a personal level. The meaning of malnutrition might be relatively simple, but the problem itself is tough and horrifying for those suffering from it. We are the fortunate ones who get to wake up every day without worrying about our meals because we have our breakfast, lunch and dinner without even having to think about it. But over one-third of the world's malnourished children live in India and the prevalence of undernutrition is highest among children under five. The problem of child malnutrition in India has often been associated with historical antecedents such as poverty, inequality and food shortage. However, countries with similar historical and societal makeup and comparable per capita income have fared much better. What malnutrition does is it weakens every part of the immune system.

In recent years, India has become a self-sufficient nation in grain production and has enjoyed steady economic growth. Despite this success, there is no alleviation of poverty, food insecurity and malnutrition in the country. India is one of the highest-ranking countries around the globe for the most number of children suffering from malnutrition. And that is something no Indian should be proud of. Recently, we have witnessed that malnutrition is becoming a crucial problem. India's grinding Covid lockdown interrupted vital government schemes that aid hundreds of millions of women and children and the COVID 19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown have made food insecurity worse by disrupting the food distribution system across large parts of India. Currently, it is felt that nutrition is more important and needs attention because malnutrition causes major health issues to the body of an individual, especially in children. These issues include stunted growth, eye problems, diabetes and heart diseases, etc. Today, 690 million people around the globe will go to bed on an empty stomach.

The 2021 Global Nutrition Report (GNR 2021) revealed five out of six global maternal, infant and young children nutrition (MIYCN) targets to address stunting, wasting, anaemia, low birth weight and childhood obesity are off track. At the same time, the global nutrition target (GNT) to combat the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is also off track. A shift from eating whole-food-based balanced meals to consuming sugary drinks, ultra-processed foods and processed red meat is negatively impacting our health and environment.

To meet nutrition targets on stunting, wasting, maternal anaemia and breastfeeding by 2030 alone there is a need for an additional 10.8 billion USD between 2022 and 2030.

According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), 2019-21, the 5th in the series India has seen no significant improvement in health and nutritional status among her population. The latest data shows, that 7.7% of children are severely wasted, 19.3% are wasted and 35.5% are stunted. At the same time, 3.4% of children are overweight which was 2.1% in NFHS-4. Anaemia among children under-5 has become significantly worse with the current prevalence as 67.1% compared to 58.6% according to NFHS-4. 57% of women of reproductive age are anaemic in the country.

Some signs and symptoms of malnutrition include:

  • Development delays
  • Weight loss
  • A lack of appetite or interest in food or drink
  • Tiredness and irritability
  • An inability to concentrate
  • Always feeling cold
  • Depression
  • Loss of fat, muscle mass, and body tissue
  • A higher risk of getting sick and taking longer to heal
  • Longer healing time for wounds

  1. Malnutrition plays an enormous role in the onset of active tuberculosis.
  2. It also increases the risk of HIV transmission from mother to child and expands the replication of the virus.
  3. Malnutrition can cause vitamin deficiency-related diseases like scurvy and rickets.
  4. As malnutrition aggravates, sufferers have less energy and experience impairment in brain functions.
  5. All this can make it difficult (or impossible) for them to perform the tasks needed to acquire food, earn an income, or gain an education.

Malnutrition can also cause acute problems, like hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar, marasmus or protein deficiency. This condition can cause lethargy, limpness, seizures and loss of consciousness. Children are particularly at risk and can become hypoglycaemic after 4 to 6 hours without food. Dehydration can also occur in malnourished people and can be life-threatening, especially in babies and small children.

A comprehensive need-based approach is the need of the hour to tackle poor nutrition and address inequality through policy reform, effective implementation of nutrition programs and ensuring a seamless food distribution system. To recover lost health during the pandemic, as well as to ensure the population remains resilient in the future, sustainable nutrition is crucial.

Treatment may include:

  • dietary changes, such as eating foods high in energy and nutrients
  • support for families to help them manage factors affecting the child's nutritional intake
  • treatment for any underlying medical conditions causing malnutrition
  • vitamin and mineral supplements
  • high-energy and protein nutritious supplements – if the other treatments are not enough on their own

Severely malnourished children need to be fed and rehydrated with great care. They cannot be provided with a regular diet immediately. They'll usually require special care in the hospital. Once they're well enough, they can gradually begin eating a traditional diet and continue this at home.

More than thousands of families in Delhi have no source of income due to Covid-19. They are finding it difficult to feed their families. We have decided to help them with monthly Rations, cooked food and sanitary products.

Rising Need for Treated Water Augmenting Wood Vinegar Consumption

For more insides:-

Wood vinegar or wood acid or pyroligneous acid is a dark liquid, which is derived from charcoal. It is obtained by heating biomass in a closed container. The smoke generated during charcoal production is cooled into a liquid and then separated into bio-oil, tar, and wood vinegar. The dark liquid is a combination of nearly 80–90% water and over 200 organic compounds, such as acetic acid, esters, formic acid, ketones, methanol, and phenol.

Moreover, the increasing implementation of government initiatives regarding bio-based products will also ensure the large-scale adoption of wood vinegar for wastewater treatment, food, animal husbandry, wood tar, and agriculture applications. In the recent past, the agriculture sector has emerged as the largest consumer of wood vinegar due to the enormous use of bio-based fertilizers and pesticides to increase productivity. For instance, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, has launched several programs in recent times to promote the use of biomass materials and bio-based products, such as wood vinegar.

The manufacturing segment of the wood vinegar market is categorized into slow paralysis, fast and intermediate pyrolysis, and others. Under this segment, the slow pyrolysis category is expected to account for the largest market share during the forecast period as slow pyrolysis provides a better yield of wood vinegar, char, and other products than other manufacturing processes. In comparison to other processes, slow pyrolysis exhibits a longer vapor resistance time and slower heating rate.

In recent years, wood vinegar producers, such as TAGROW CO. LTD., Nakashima Trading Co. Ltd., Ace (Singapore) Pte Ltd., Canada Renewable Bioenergy Corporation, Byron Biochar, and Nettenergy BV, have engaged in technological advancements to develop better and improved pyrolysis kiln methods to produce char, biochar, and wood vinegar. Additionally, the advanced pyrolysis methods help enhance the production process of wood vinegar and reduce the total manufacturing process. Further, the producers are also focusing on involving poverty-ridden people in wood vinegar production processes as the material is majorly produced in villages by using local resources and feedstock.

Geographically, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region held the largest share in the wood vinegar market in 2015. This was on account of the presence of a vast base of end users and the existence of a large number of local producers in the region. Moreover, the surging need for clean water, owing to the booming population, will also create a huge requirement for wood vinegar in the coming years. For instance, the World Bank states that the population of India surged from 1.353 billion in 2018 to 1.366 billion in 2019.

Thus, the escalating need for treated water and surging government focus on using bio-based products will fuel the consumption of wood vinegar globally.

Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world and the most effective way to break out of the cycle of poverty. Yet, millions of children remain out-of-school in India. Before the COVID-19 crisis, 6 million children were out of school. When the pandemic struck, school closures impacted the education of 247 children enrolled in elementary and secondary schools. These children are not only deprived of their right to receive a quality education, but they lose their childhood by being pushed into child labour and early marriages.

The government, through the Right to Education Act, 2009, has been making its way in enrolling and retaining children in school, especially from the marginalized sector. However, any progress made had been hampered by the pandemic. While online education replaced regular classes, students from vulnerable communities without access to smartphones and the internet were left behind. Two years of school closures in India resulted in a huge learning gap.

The Power of NGOs

Whenever there is a major imbalance, NGOs exist to balance the see-saw in times of crises. NGOs like Oxfam India play a significant role in ensuring that every child, especially those from vulnerable communities, receive the opportunity to build a better future through education. Organisations such as Oxfam India, Save the Children, World Vision, UNICEF, Cry etc in India work at the grass-root level to strengthen the education system, spread awareness about the importance of education and enrol as many children as possible so they can thrive in life.

Oxfam India is an NGO that works in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Odisha to send the most vulnerable and underprivileged children back to school and empower them to break the cycle of poverty. As well as ensure that the education of children from such communities continues in the midst of the pandemic.

NGO works through contributions and you too can support an NGO and change a child's life forever. While supporting a cause, your donation is eligible up to 50% tax benefit under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act. When you donate to an NGO like Oxfam India, you help in the following ways:

NGOs work towards identifying the most vulnerable children in the poorest states of India. Due to unaccessibility and poverty and in times of humanitarian crisis - children miss out on school. Oxfam India helps enrol children in school under the Right to Education Act (RTE), and ensure that children who have dropped out of school as a result of the pandemic, are re-enrolled in school. As of September 2022, 1081 children have been re-enrolled in school as schools across the country start to re-open.

Awareness and Counselling

Through workshops and various activities, awareness is generated amongst parents and local communities about the importance of education. Oxfam India also conducts regular counselling sessions to encourage parents to send their children especially girls to school and help them participate in various activities
