“It is only by doing good to others that one does good to oneself”.
This quote by Swami Vivekananda can sum up the life of Mr. Tarun Mathur. He has dedicated his life to serving society and to the upliftment of people who possess the will to succeed in life.
He is also a person with great qualities. He is the founder of Hamari Pahchan NGO and through this organization, he has done exemplary work in deriving innovative ideas to promote social entrepreneurship. He has served with Air India Airlines for more than a decade. He is also an international chess player who has represented India in several countries.
Hamari Pahchan NGO one of the top most NGOs in India which is situated in New Delhi and has been up and running for the past 7 years. The Hamari Pahchan NGO has over 5000 active members and relentlessly working on more than 390 campaigns. Mr. Mathur's efforts have resulted in Hamari Pahchan becoming a closely-knit family with thousands of members, interns, and volunteers. He has developed several programs, including initiatives like
‘Sukhad’, which promotes menstrual health aimed at providing 50,000 sanitary kits to underprivileged and poor women. This initiative helped thousands of women have better menstrual hygiene during their menstruation. Apart from that, he created a job security initiative for poor women where he empowers women to make them capable enough to earn their bread through the “Skill Development Project”.
‘Drishti’, which promotes education for the impoverished, and the skill development project, which assists underprivileged women in standing on their own feet. It is an initiative by Hamari Pahchan NGO to bridge the gap between the privileged and underprivileged children of society. He provided students with formal and informal education which are held weekly and topics taught to children are based on various crucial topics which help in the overall development of a child. During the lockdown period, with the closure of schools, he came up with the idea of ‘Gadgetshala’ which gave underprivileged children access to mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and Wi-Fi connections that don’t hinder their future. More than 15000 students have benefitted under the Drishti Project since 2015 and conducted classes under the Gadgetshala initiative for more than 100 students.
There is always a lack of legal awareness among the people in society. No proper awareness of their basic legal rights is the reason behind the exploitation of underprivileged people in society. Hamari Pahchan NGO, by organizing free legal awareness camps in the slum areas tries to eliminate this lack of awareness in the society. Mr. Mathur along with the help of a lawyer who volunteers provides free legal consultation and court appearances for this social cause.
He launched the ‘Save Delhi, Brave Delhi’ campaign, in partnership with the Delhi Government, which saw CCTV cameras deployed in various parts of the city. The thought of establishing Hamari Pahchan NGO was founded on the base idea of women's safety in the capital. Following the horrifying Nirbhaya Rape in Delhi, he instructed his daughter to stay at home and not to go out during the night. To that, his daughter replied rather than stopping her, make Delhi safer. That conversation with his daughter shattered his perspective on society and made him realize that numerous difficulties in society needed to be taken care of. He was even part of debate panels of various news channels like News24, CNBC Awaaz, and Sahara Samay, to create more awareness and widen the reach of his ideas and message.
Through the hard work of Mr. Tarun Mathur and his team, Hamari Pahchan NGO has sold more than 600 handicrafts across India which were made by women through their skill development project, more than 500 women were employed, more than 400 children got sponsored education, conducted more than 20 health camps, more than 450 families provided with access to basic health and facilities.
The ultimate goal of Mr. Tarun Mathur is to create a world with tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and all people live with dignity and security. He have made an impact and helped everyone in finding their pahchan and live life in dignity.
