Why MODI's new "Air India one" is so spe बड़ोदरा


The new VIP's flying machine for Indian Prime Minister, President, and Vice President delivered at IGI Airport on Oct 1st, 2020 after 15 hours of journey from Fort Worth in the US. It was actually scheduled to deliver in July 2020, the present pandemic crisis became the reason for the delay.

This is customised B-777 aircraft with a very advanced defence system including missiles, jamming mechanism, and technology specially made for the indian VVIP's traveling. On officials note the estimated cost of purchase and retrofitting the two planes have been around INR 8,400/- Crores.

The plane have a state of the art missiles system called the Large Aircraft Infrared Counter Measures (LAIRCM) and Self Protection Suites (SPS). these defense systems can protect the aircraft man-portable missiles also increases the warning time for the onboard crew. It can also automatically operate countermeasures to protect itself from any advance mediate range missiles. All these new defense systems are fitted at a boeing facility in San Antonio, Texas. This reminds the US had approved the purchase of two defense system known as LAIRCM and SPS for an estimated cost of $190 million USD.


It also has an advanced communication system that allows for mid-air audio and video communication. It is completely secured and cannot be hacked or tapped.

The two GE90-115 engines can release enough thrust for the new Air India One to travel with a speed of 900 Mph. It has the potential to hold in the mid-air for 17 hours without refueling. The aircraft amassed a VVIP suite, two conference rooms, one press briefing room, one patient transfer unit, secured video telephony, and a soundproofing system. The rear seats are economy class category seats and the rest of the seats are the business class category seats.

This aircraft will be registered under the military aircraft which gets a K-series registration number. "In terms of Livery, the aircraft dons the national emblem and the name 'India' and 'Bharat' written in both Hindi and English on either side of the aircraft, while the national flag is present on the tail wing" IANS reported.

Previously it used to be a B-747 aircraft which is an Air India aircraft for VVIP traveling, It was controlled by Air India pilots and crew to ferry P.M. Now, This jumbo aircraft was replaced with a new Customized B-777, and like before it will not be under the control of Air India pilots. The India Air Force (IAF) is taking this responsibility to control, Handle, and Maintain VVIP's aircraft.

Will Prosthesis Be More Than Just a Replacement?

A prosthesis is an artificial device that is used to replace a missing body part that was lost due to various reasons like trauma, disease, or a condition present at birth. It is used to restore functions of the missing body part.

The earliest evidence of prosthetics has been found in ancient Egypt and Iran. In ancient Iran, they made a prosthetic eye using bitumen paste covered with gold, while there is evidence of prosthetic toes made from wood (prosthetic toe of painted cartonnage as seen in above photo) found in ancient Egyptian civilizations. One of the most famous historical pieces of evidence is that of the Roman General Marcus Sergius who used a prosthetic iron hand to hold his shield so that he could return to battle.

Though there were many unique prostheses throughout history offering different functionality, proper development in prosthetics began only in the 20th century. Ambrose Pare, considered one of the fathers of surgery, had made drastic advancements in amputation surgery with the invention of kneeling pegleg and foot prosthesis with knee-lock and adjustable harness.

After World War II, there was a further increase in prosthesis development. Of the soldiers in the US Army wounded in action during World War II, about 15,000 (2.5%) required major amputations. It was in 1945 that a cooperative research and development program was launched by the highest scientific body engaged in the war effort—the National Academy of Sciences at the request of the military for research and development in prosthetics. This drastically improved the quality and functionality of prosthetics.

In the last decade, prosthetics have revolutionized with the development of new materials, which are lighter, cheaper, and more durable. Scientists, Doctors, and Engineers have worked together to restore as many natural functions as the replaced body part has in a prosthesis. Plastic and carbon fibre-based prostheses are lighter and stronger, and as their parts can be 3D-printed, there is a massive cut in manufacturing costs.

3D-printed prosthetics has been a huge success, as it helps in rapid prototyping due to its low cost, efficiency, quick manufacturing, and low waste generation. It has enabled a Manipal-based surgeon Dr Anil K Bhat to 3D-print prosthetic hands for children with deformed or no hands at a cost as low as Rs4000 to Rs5000.

Another material offered in prosthetics is cane. A Bengaluru based startup called 'Rise Legs' has come with this unusual but promising material for prosthetics. With a 3D carving technique to make sockets, founder Arun Cherian says the prosthesis can cost between Rs5000 to Rs1.25 lakh.

With the invention of microprocessors in the 1980s, there has been a steady rise in electronics integrated into prostheses. Advanced mechatronics, intelligent sensors, and AI have aided in achieving a higher order of lost sensorimotor functions.

Electronic skin is bringing the joy of experiencing touch to prosthetics. This prosthetic skin is made up of fabric and rubber laced with sensors to mimic nerve endings, e-dermis recreates a sense of touch as well as pain by sensing stimuli and relaying the impulses back to the peripheral nerves. Motors integrated into prosthesis helps to restore the power of lost muscles. Hence, giving the users the ability to cover greater distances than a normal body-powered prosthesis. A.I. in robotic prostheses uses complex algorithms to interpret nerve signals from the patient's muscles that allow the prosthesis to be controlled more precisely.

These modern features in prosthetics have made the life of prosthesis users more comfortable and independent. So that leads us to the final question, what is the future of prosthetics?

At the University of Chicago, associate professor and neuroprosthetics researcher Dr. Sliman Bensmaia say, brain-controlled prosthetics have become a vibrant field of research. He says, "The idea is to put electrodes in the motor cortex so when a tetraplegic patient tries to move their arm or imagines moving their arm, there is a characteristic pattern of activation in this motor part of the brain. We can take the signals from this part of the brain and infer what the patient or the subject wanted to do, and then you make the robotic arm do that."

Create different opportunities for a promising career because prospects don’t happen just like that, but you create them.
