Covid 19 and Work From Home Culture

I am a staffer of an NGO in Myanmar. I have been experiencing home based work for a few months now. This work-from-home measure was implemented as a result of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. Before this evil known as COVID-19 started attacking us, it originated in Wuhan, China earlier this year. When COVID-19 first began, I viewed it as something totally unexpected. I did not think it will come to Myanmar because we were well-aware of the written reports concerning the virus and often kept ourselves abreast of new COVID-19 developments. As an extension of being taken by surprise by this pandemic, we never expected to have to work from home for almost a year, either. Further, Burmese people are also not allowed to go outside, without wearing a mask. So, most of our activities have been postponed or adjusted beyond belief. Nevertheless, during these difficult times, my NGO and I are working to help key groups of the HIV/AIDS-positive community. These People Living with HIV (PLHIV), include but are not limited to Drug Users, Sex workers, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Thus, if we stopped the implementation of our work, it would make these people more susceptible to COVID-related symptoms, which in turn could dangerously exacerbate their HIV illness. It is imperative that we continue our responsibilities, while social distancing.

The question however remains: Does Myanmar’s working society know how to be productive and complete their tasks virtually? To answer this complicated question, most Burmese people do not know how to work under these conditions well. I would like to present my experiences. Our senior management team decided to work from a home-based system for supportive staff. This system works alternatively for implemented staffs and data collecting staff at a ground stage level. As a part of one of the supportive groups, I have been back in my home town since the first case was found in Yangon. My first day of working from home was terrible and the experience has not gotten better with time. It is very difficult to focus on work having to worry about background noises, chores, and family disturbances. My family is small, but all of these problems that I mentioned persist within our family home. As humorous as it may sound, they do not comprehend that I am working in front of my laptop.

Having said all of this, I used our small living room as my home office space, but it did not work all too well. Above all else, on some days the weather is unbearably flaming. To the point that it can make one go mad working while trapped inside a room without air conditioning. This problem was so challenging that I had to buy a plastic air pool and work in the water to try to alleviate this problem. If only this was my only issue. Power outages are also quite common during the summer months. This fact made it impossible for me to keep up with the new developments introduced by my NGO, such as the daily Zoom meetings held by our team. These complications have forced me to switch between data and Wi-Fi several times a day. You can imagine how awful of a situation is. Simply put, we suffer both physically and mentally by working in this fashion. I have become impatient and easily agitated.

After a few weeks of working from home, I introspectively look for solutions that fix these problems. I started to make my own work space. I furnished it with my own things like stationary items, an air purify plant, and notebooks. Also, other objects like my table. To contribute to a healthy headspace I usually begin work by singing songs. Similarly, I wear light makeup and dress up (perfume and all) to make sure my office and me have aesthetically pleasing vibes. Then, I sit in my own space during office and work hours. Further, I look for other coping strategies to release stress. I believe that if people use these strategies or come up with their own ones, it can help them survive this new work approach. Despite working from home being challenging, it is better than not working at all. I pity the out-of-work factory workers, hucksters, and merchants that provide plastic bottles to the homeless. According to research [what research? State it!}, “250,000 people were fired because of Corona.” I am fortunate to still have my job at this time.

I wish this pandemic period ends as soon as possible. That way all businesses can operate at full productivity once again. Further, I hope for all of my colleagues to continue to find flexible ways to help them survive working from home.
