WOMEN’S FITNESS & HEALTH ISSUES

You May Be Suffering From Hormonal Imbalance

It began as some minor bloating the day before my menstrual period started. Then came the headaches. Finally, a few days of minor discomfort turned into something that I had to plan my schedule around because of my symptoms.

I was not alone. Jane* suffered from backaches and headaches so severe that she had to take off from work. Susan developed cravings for sugary and salty foods and began having breakthrough bleeding and bleeding mid-cycle. These symptoms have been classified as PMS - premenstrual syndrome. Frequently dismissed by doctors as “normal” hormonal fluctuations and scoffed at on bumper stickers and advertisements; PMS has become widely accepted.

In an era where woman strive to break through the “glass ceiling” and assert their position alongside their male coworkers, demonstrating a weakness linked to their gender is taboo. So women have suffered in silence when they have been unable to convince anyone that their symptoms may not be “normal”.

I was one of those people. For years, I was dismissed by doctors while my symptoms increased. Unable to find the answers I was seeking, I finally stopped asking and accepted my fate. That was until I started going to Dr. Daniel Bies, a wellness practitioner of chiropractic, acupuncture and nutrition. While treating me for an unrelenting low backache, he asked me if I experienced headaches before the onset of my period.

Understanding the Results of a Hormonal Imbalance

Suspecting estrogen dominance, he suggested I take a diagnostic test to measure my hormone levels throughout my cycle.

An average cycle consists of 28 days, starting with approximately 4 days of menses - blood flow - during which time the hormone estrogen builds up in the woman’s body. It peaks mid-cycle, triggering ovulation, when an egg is released.

Progesterone, another hormone, starts increasing as the uterine lining builds up and the cervix becomes more receptive to fertilization. If the egg is not fertilized, the lining breaks down as estrogen decreases in the body. The delicate coordination of these hormones is controlled by another chemical, DHEA.

All three of these, along with minor doses of testosterone must be in perfect balance. Upsetting that balance can cause numerous symptoms, including bloating and weight gain, headaches, backaches, mild to severe cramping, cravings for salty or sweet foods, sensitivity to temperature, allergy flare-ups and numerous other symptoms. Not all women will experience the full range of symptoms and some may be milder or more severe than others.

Because of the ambiguity of the symptoms, the age in which these symptoms present themselves, and the degree to which they are felt varies widely, it has been difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. But since Bies and his wife, Erin, (also a nutritionist) attended seminars on estrogen dominance and began treating patients for it, the results have been amazing. In my own case, I took a natural vitamin formula made by a medical laboratory and sold only to physicians, to flush out the excess estrogen.

Then in the second half of my cycle, I used a natural progesterone cream made from wild yam extract, which I applied to my skin. This was to supplement the lower than normal levels my own body was making. Finally, I took a DHEA supplement to make up for the shortage of DHEA in my body so my hormones could become regulated again.

Treating Hormonal Imbalance

I was astounded by the difference it made. The headaches, cramping and bloating disappeared my first cycle after using these products. Each month thereafter, the symptoms remained blessedly non-existent. The most convincing evidence for me was when I took a trip to Italy for two weeks. The trip would overlap with the second half of my cycle, so I packed the progesterone cream with me. I left the DHEA home because I was concerned about the effects that temperature changes during travel may have on the fragile capsules.

With the excitement over travel and my time schedule thrown off, I neglected to use the cream until I got home. That month, my symptoms returned. The following month, I was back on the program again - and voila! - my symptoms again disappeared.

My story is far from unique. Dr. John Lee, who has written a score of books including What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Perimenopause, has documented the same results in scores of women.

Oral contraceptives and genetics may play a role as possible causes of hormone imbalance. What really amazed me was that estrogen dominance could also mimic hyperthyroidism, a disease more common in women. For years, I had all the symptoms of this disease - and since thyroid disorder runs in my family - I was extensively tested. Blood work, CAT scans, radioactive isotope testing - you name it - I was tested with it. But all the tests came back negative.

My symptoms were considered classic hypothyroidism - weight gain, constant fatigue, dry skin and eyes and a strong sensitivity to cold. Other diseases that produce some of these symptoms - iron deficiency anemia, Epstein Barr, Lyme disease, etc. were also ruled out. But upon taking the progesterone cream and DHEA, my hypothyroidism-like symptoms also dropped off.

The changes were obvious to those around me as well - I wasn’t wearing layers of clothes in well air-conditioned rooms and I had more energy.

Jane and Susan also reported similar findings. Jane was able to maintain a normal work schedule and even received a promotion because she was more dependable and productive at work. Susan lost weight when her food cravings diminished and she was finally able to stick to a sensible weight loss plan without her efforts being sabotaged by her cycle.

More and more people are discovering - and demanding - natural health treatments. But like their synthetic counterparts - being “natural” does not mean without side effects. Those who have jumped on the health food craze have discovered that any chemicals - manmade or occurring in nature - can alter the delicate chemical balance of our bodies. In some cases, this is beneficial - when an imbalance is corrected or a deficiency is addressed. But one must always proceed with caution - reading labels, becoming informed, and staying under the advice of a medical doctor. Herbs and vitamins can also cause or aggravate existing conditions such as hypertension, heart disease and diabetes.

The best advocate for your health is you. You know your body better than anyone and when you recognize that you feel different from before - your energy levels have dropped, you have a pain that won’t subside - ask questions. Keep a diary and become observant. Are you working longer or different hours that may be causing the fatigue? Have you recently been sick - or developed a rash, been bit by a tick?

The more knowledgeable you are about your condition - when it started, what makes it worse, what improves it if anything, how long does it last, etc., the better able you will be to provide your doctor with the clues he needs. And if you do not feel your doctor is taking you seriously or listening to your complaints, don’t be afraid to seek a second - or third or fourth - opinion.

You can also investigate your symptoms on the Internet - it can literally put a whole world of research at your fingertips. But again, proceed with caution. Check the references of who is posting the information. Anyone can put up a website and blurt out information. Investigate as many different sites as you can - so you are pulling from a wide source of information and not just a few limited viewpoints.

You may even consider posting your symptoms on an on-line bulletin board. Often you can do this anonymously by creating a sign-in name, and see what responses you get. You may just hear from someone who has experienced similar symptoms and find out what worked and what didn’t.

You may hear from sources from the other side of the world or in your own backyard. My mother went to a new doctor for a second opinion, but the recommended treatment was very different than originally suggested. She felt very confident with the second doctor and what he said, but she had been going to her original doctor for years and hesitated to question his treatment.

So she hopped on the Internet and found a news article on his practice - not a paid advertisement - and one of the women quoted in the article lived nearby. She contacted the woman by phone and she told my mother that she had been very satisfied with his treatment. My mother opted to go with the second doctor and had excellent results.

It’s your body, and ultimately only you can keep it running right. You need to take charge of your symptoms and whether it’s a hormonal imbalance or something else - you have to decide what treatment and methods you are willing to accept or reject.

Fayose’s N2.2bn Fraud Trial Stalled Over Witness Absence

The N2.2bn fraud trial of a former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, and a firm, Spotless Investment Limited, was stalled on Monday over the inability of the prosecution to bring its witness to court, a report by PUNCH said.

The prosecuting counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), told Justice C.J. Aneke of the Federal High Court in Lagos that a relative of the witness scheduled to come had been admitted into a COVID-19 isolation centre.

Jacobs urged the judge to consequently adjourn the case.

The defence counsel, Mr Olalekan Ojo (SAN), said he had no objection to the request for an adjournment.

Justice Aneke adjourned the matter until October 20, 2020.

In the charges, the EFCC alleged, among other things that Fayose, on June 17, 2014, “Took possession of the sum of N1, 219, 000,000 to fund your 2014 gubernatorial campaign in Ekiti State, which you reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act, to wit: criminal breach of trust/stealing.”

The ex-governor was also alleged to have on the same day “received a cash payment of $5,000,000 from Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, the then Minister of State for Defence, which sum exceeded the amount authorised by law and you thereby committed an offence contrary to sections 1 and 16(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended) and punishable under Section 16 (2)(b) of the same Act”.

The EFCC also alleged that Fayose purchased a property known as No.44, Osun Crescent, Maitama, Abuja, for N200m in the name of “your elder sister, Mrs Moji Oladeji.”

But Fayose and Spotless Investment Limited pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Ekiti APC crisis: I’m not an enemy to anyone – Governor Fayemi

Indications emerged in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, at the weekend that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced moves to end its internal wrangling in the state chapter of the party.

The decision to resolve all grievances was reached at an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting held at the state capital and attended by the Governor Kayode Fayemi, his deputy, all elected party officials as well party representatives from the 16 local government areas of the state.

Governor Fayemi, in his remark at the event, gave the message of hope by reassuring the stakeholders that the crises rocking the party were summountable.

The governor spoke after he got a confidence vote from the stakeholders who expressed satisfaction on the pace of infrastructural development in the State.

Fayemi described the recent political crisis in the party as “family affairs”, stressing that he held no grudge with any party member or caucus.

The governor acknowledged that upheavals are not unexpected in a political setting but expressed confidence that his administration has the capability to manage whatever disagreement that may arise.

“Whatever disagreement we have in Ekiti APC is a family affair. I’m not an enemy to anyone and neither is anyone an enemy to me,” Fayemi maintained.

A communique made available to journalists by the Public Relations of the party, Ade Ajayi, said an adhoc committee would be constituted to address all grievances and make recommendations to the party.

The stakeholders also resolved to abide by the party’s mandate that in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive that all matters in court against the party at all levels should be withdrawn with immediate effect.

The Party also resolved as follows: “And the code of conduct for all political appointees and elected officials should be strictly adhered to.

“That forthwith, no negative story should be sponsored against the party in the media. Such action by any member shall be viewed as anti-party.

“A vote of confidence was passed on Governor John Kayode Fayemi after a review of the many projects carried out by his administration, which include many road projects, water project, renovation of primary and secondary schools, sinking of boreholes across the schools, infrastructure development, airport project and other life-touching activities, which include his giant stride in agriculture, health, social investment, attraction of investments, both foreign and national, and making Ekiti proud as the Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum as well as playing a leadership role at the national level,” the communique reads in part.

Recall that the Fayemi’s administration came under attack when about 15 chieftains of the Party sought the dissolution of the State Working Committee on the claim that it was not duly constituted.

Senator Femi Ojudu, Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Muhammadu Buhari, who is leading the attack against Fayemi had claimed that the governor underperformed.

The Stakeholders’ Caucus comprises the Governor, Deputy Governor, all the Party Excos, former governors, national and state assembly members (both serving and former), cabinet members, elected party chairmen, party elders’ forum and 10 representatives from each local government.

Ayo Fayose: President Buhari unaware of happenings in Presidency

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, said on Sunday that President Muhammadu Buhari was unconscious of happenings in his the Presidency, and as such, should be ignored.

Fayose spoke in reaction to recent comments by the President’s spokesperson, Femi Adesina, that Buhari would have dealt with Fayose and River State Governor, Nyesom Wike, for their anti-Buhari tendency but that the President only chose to tolerate them as a father of the nation.

The former governor, in a statement by his spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, in Ado Ekiti, lampooned Adesina for talking about “a President punishing serving governors or even ordinary Nigerians as if they are his servants”.

In the statement entitled, “Buhari should be ignored, he’s unconscious of happenings in his own Presidency – Fayose”, the former governor stated, “On the comment by my brother and friend, Femi Adesina, about the President not dealing with me and Governor Wike, President Buhari, in my opinion, is an accidental president, who is not only clueless but unconscious of happenings in his own Presidency.

“A man who can’t defend or protect his immediate family is not in any way better than an effigy.

“If not, those around him won’t be talking about a President ‘punishing’ serving governors or even ordinary Nigerians as if they are his servants.

“Femi Adesina, do you realize I have been quiet for a while, having concluded that Buhari’s Presidency is deaf and dumb?

“So don’t wake a sleeping lion so as not to be confronted with consequences you can’t contend with.”

Buhari’s Presidency Is Accidental, Deaf And Dumb, Says Former Ekiti Governor, Fayose

Former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has described Muhammadu Buhari as an ‘accidental’ President.

Fayose said this while reacting to a piece published by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President on Friday.

Adesina in the piece said Buhari would have dealt with Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike and Fayose for their “anti-Buhari tendency” but he chose to tolerate the duo as a father of the nation.

But Fayose in a series of tweets on Sunday said the President cannot even manage the affairs of his immediate family not to talk of his party and the nation.

He said, “On the comment by my brother and friend, ‪@FemAdesina‬, on the President not dealing with myself and Governor Wike, President Buhari, in my opinion is an accidental President, who is not only clueless but unconscious of happenings in his own Presidency.

“A man who can’t defend or protect his immediate family is not in anyway better than an effigy. If not, those around him won't be talking about a President punishing serving governors or even ordinary Nigerians as if they are his servants.

APC crisis: Senator Ojudu’s road to Golgotha signed, sealed – Ekiti Assembly

The Ekiti State House of Assembly has described the alleged war of attrition waged on governor Kayode Fayemi and All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti by Senator Babafemi Ojudu, as one capable of sinking his (Ojudu’s) political career.

The lawmakers also expressed dismay over attempt by the President’s aide to upset the cordial working relationship between the executive and legislative arm of government in Ekiti, urging Ojudu “to look elsewhere for his co- conspirators “as the legislators cannot fall for his tricks .

Ojudu, the Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Muhammadu Buhari, who has been critical of Fayemis style of governance in Ekiti in recent time is also challenging the legal validity of the Paul Omotosho led executives of the APC in Ekiti.

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon Yemisi Ayokunle in a statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, said the assembly was not unaware of the ex Senator’s move to cause bad blood among members through his recent outburst .

The President’s aide while featuring on a Radio Personality Programme in Ekiti had insinuated that a sizeable numbers of Assembly members were harbouring ill- feelings against Fayemi’s style of governance. Ojudu further alleged that certain unnamed aggrieved lawmakers were also sending him indicting officials to back their claims of Fayemi’s alleged excesses.

“The attention of the Honourable Members of Ekiti State House of Assembly has been drawn to a statement made by former Senator Babafemi Ojudu on a programme of New Cruse F.M 92.7, Ikere Ekiti on June 27, 2020. The former Senator claimed that some unnamed members of Ekiti State House of Assembly are sending to him, ‘documents of wrongdoings by the Ekiti State government under Governor John Kayode Fayemi’.

“Ordinarily, we would not have dignified the erstwhile Senator with a response, but because of the evil machinations of human minds and the possibility of some gullible minds believing his lies, he should not be allowed to go away with his blue murder and barefaced lies”, the statement reads in part

Adding “There’s no doubt, this is a red herring from a persona that has been variously described as ‘anger and conspiracy’ in motion; whose trademark is blackmail and unquenchable knack and ability to trade anything for pecuniary benefits.”

“We, as a House and with all emphasis at our disposal categorically state that there’s no member of our respected Assembly that has any relationship with the ex-Senator.”

“We are men of integrity. We’re a set of focused representatives of our people, who cannot be swayed by a character like Ojudu who prefers to rule in hell than serve in paradise.”

“We give the Senator blank cheque to come out with his facts and the personalities involved in his concoction and tissue of lies.”

“With our knowledge of the performance and relevance of the former Senator in Ekiti politics, the regular question our people have always asked him is: Senator Ojudu where are your masses?”

“The 6th Assembly is too focused in making laws for the good of our people. We are doing this in active collaboration with the other arms of government especially the Executive arm. The Five Pillars Agenda of the government of Dr. Kayode Fayemi is too sacred that we cannot be distracted by a incurable cynic like Senator Ojudu.”

“We’re indeed glad that all the efforts of good governance have been made possible by the enabling laws emanating from the House. They are yielding positive results, despite the general dwindling financial resources. Everybody can see these except the ostrich among us, like the Senator.”

“The roads infrastructure are there for everyone to see: Oye-Otun; Aramoko-Erijiyan; New Ado-Iyin Road; Airport project; Agbado-Omuo; Ilupeju-Igbemo etc. Only in the week the contract for the dualisation of Ado-Akure road, influenced by the Governor was awarded by the Federal Executive Council.”

“We therefore advise Senator Ojudu to look elsewhere for his co travellers in his trademark game of divide and rule. Everyone is too aware of his character to take him serious. We can only wish him goodluck on his road to Golgotha, which is already signed, sealed and delivered”‘ the assembly maintained.

Ekiti Assembly denies sabotaging Governor Fayemi’s administration

Members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly has denied harbouring ill-feelings against Governor Kayode Fayemi, saying their relationship with the governor remains strong and cordial.

The 26 lawmakers, who were elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, said the executive and legislature have mutual respect for each other, saying this will be deployed to overhaul every sector of the economy to benefit the masses, rather than sabotaging the system.

The Assembly said this in a statement in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Sunday while responding to a comment allegedly made by the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu while appearing on a radio programme.

Ojudu was said to have claimed that some unnamed members of House of Assembly were availing with documents of wrongdoings allegedly perpetrated by Governor Fayemi in the running of the state.

But, according to the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Honourable Yemisi Ayokunle in the statement said the House maintained that reports were intended to cause disaffection between the executive and legislature to derail governance.

She said, “Ordinarily, we would not have dignified the erstwhile Senator with a response, but because of the evil machinations of human minds and the possibility of some gullible minds believing his lies, he should not be allowed to go away with his blue murder and barefaced lies.

“We, as a House and with all emphasis at our disposal categorically state that there’s no member of our respected Assembly that has any relationship with the ex-Senator.

“We are men of integrity. We are a set of focused representatives of our people, who cannot be swayed by a character like Ojudu who prefers to rule in hell than serve in paradise.”

The lawmakers challenged the Senator to come clear to substantiate the allegation with verifiable facts and point out the personalities involved in the accusation.

“With our knowledge of the performance and relevance of the former Senator in Ekiti politics, the regular question our people have always asked him is: Senator Ojudu where are your masses?

“The 6th Assembly is too focused on making laws for the good of our people. We are doing this in active collaboration with the other arms of government especially the Executive arm.

“We are indeed glad that all the efforts of good governance have been made possible by the enabling laws emanating from the House. They are yielding positive results, despite the general dwindling financial resources. Everybody can see these except the ostrich among us, like the Senator.

Ekiti opens sexual assault referral centre for victims

The Ekiti State Government has established a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) where victims of rape and other molestations will receive medical and psychological attention, rather than being abandoned to suffer.

The government also assured that it will strengthen the adopted policy of naming and shaming of perpetrators of rape, by publishing their photographs on the state’s website and pasting in public palaces.

The wife of the state governor, Mrs Bisi Fayemi gave the revelation on Friday while making a presentation on the floor of the Assembly during an advocacy visit to expand the frontiers of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention in the state.

She stated that the referral centre, located within the premises of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti will provide well guided and discreet medical supports for survivors.

“The SARC will be operational soon. It will attend to GBV survivors in a prompt, discreet and professional manner. Discussions have been held with Council Chairmen to replicate SARC in all their local governments,” she said.

Mrs Fayemi applauded the Assembly for the passage of the Gender-based Violence bill, 2019 and the compulsory treatment and care for Sexually Assaulted Minors Bill, 2020, saying these will help in fast-tracking actions against GBV.

According to her, “We are ready to strengthen this aspect of naming and shaming of perpetrators of rape on social media and in our palaces because it was embedded in our cultural practices not to cover up perpetrators of evil.”

She urged the lawmakers to declare emergency against GBV through a robust and strong legal framework while charging governors in the country to also set up machinery for the promulgation of the laws that will prevent rape and take care of post-event trauma in their states.

The Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Honourable Funminiyi Afuye, who applauded the first lady for her strides in women empowerment and emancipation, said Mrs Fayemi has etched her name in gold as a campaigner for respect for human dignity and protection of Gender.

https://avalanches.com/ng/lagos_the_pandemic_has_affected_and_will_likely_continue_to_affect_house_hol6728721_16_11_2023

The pandemic has affected and will likely continue to affect house hold finances for years to come till we can recover . having a plan , prioritizing spending and use of resources efficiently will be a key to financial stability. Many families, businesses were affected due to the pandemic, firms laying off their staffs due to inability to harbour and pay them. But if the government and the citizens will work together we will recover quickly from the melt down caused by the pandemic. And looking at the positive lesson, this has brought change in the way individuals spend money on irrelevant things. People now manage their resources. And after this pandemic , if we maintain this it will help us save more and recover quick.

Economically/ Commerce:

The advent of technology and introduction of technology into commerce was to improve or aid the operation of businesses. After tackling Covid-19 (post-Covid19) I believe that there will be change in Nigeria commercial sector, which is going to help boost the nations economy. This change is based on we embracing technology and applying it in running our business. Before now we know that some business owner accepted cashless policy and the use of social media and soft-wares(apps and websites) to reach out to their customers. Buying and selling are made online even payments which made business easy. But not all entrepreneurs embraced that, most still prefer cash payments and face to face transaction.

Covid-19 has taught many how to use the internet and electronic devices to reach out to their customers both small, medium and large scale enterprises. Some firms ordered their staffs to work from home and some witnessed increase in their performance. After this pandemic some firms and entrepreneurs might still want to continue like that.

Power Sector:

During this pandemic the government have seen the need of steady electricity in the nation, we the citizens have been clamouring for that for long. It would have reduced the problem we are facing during this pandemic if we have steady power supply.

Epileptic power supply in Nigeria has been a problem to every sector of Nigeria economy ranging from business, education etc. It is one of the problem against E-learning in our country, no electricity for students and teacher(lecturers) to charge their devices or make use of their electronic devices which will help them access the internet for lectures. Though during the lock-down Nigeria government promised to give some free months power supply but that is not the major problem. The problem is how steady is the power supply.

We encountered many challenges during this pandemic and also it brought a lot of changes into the system. Government and individuals have lessons to learn from the shock and challenges Covid19 brought. I am using this medium to beckon on the government to take necessary actions in resolving the problems we are facing now by learning from the lessons Covid-19 brought. They should invest in education, health, agricultural sector, power sector etc, so we will not suffer all this challenges any longer.

Masses Urged to Act Amidst Dire State of 2023 Nigerian Presidential Election and Legal Challenges

Options to Explore for Reclaiming Mandate Amidst Controversial Election Outcome

Nigeria, [Oct 9 2023] – The 2023 Nigerian presidential election has left the nation in turmoil, with concerns growing over the integrity of the electoral process and the voice of the masses. This sixth consecutive presidential election since the end of military rule in 1999 saw a historic shift, breaking unwritten traditions and sparking legal battles that now leave the populace searching for answers.

Historic Election Raises Eyebrows

In a historic turn of events, the 2023 election saw a Muslim-Muslim ticket securing the presidency, shattering the norms of power rotation between the north and south, and between Christians and Muslims. This unprecedented move was followed by controversy, including low voter turnout, violence, and allegations of rigging. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), only 26.71% of registered voters cast their ballots, marking the lowest turnout since the nation's return to democracy in 1999. Voter apathy, insecurity, logistical problems, and regional boycotts contributed to this dismal figure. Also, INEC was popularly accused of refusing to transmit results of presidential by BiVAS to create a chance for the ruling party APC and it's presidential aspirant to manipulate vote results.

Legal Challenges and Controversy

The aftermath of the election saw legal challenges filed by Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the LP, both claiming widespread irregularities and vote manipulation. Their petitions landed at the doorstep of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), where a five-judge panel presided over the hearings from March to August 2023. The PEPT ultimately dismissed most claims, ruling that the petitioners failed to prove their allegations beyond reasonable doubt. In a significant move, the tribunal upheld the eligibility and qualification of the elected president, despite concerns over academic credentials and alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

Final Verdict and Dissatisfaction

On September 6, 2023, the PEPT delivered its final judgment, confirming the election results and dismissing the petitions. The tribunal stated that the elected president secured the highest number of lawful votes and met the constitutional requirements for victory. This decision left the petitioners disheartened, vowing to take their cases to the Supreme Court, Nigeria's highest judicial authority. They have 21 days from the judgment date to file their appeals.

Masses Seek Ways to Reclaim Their Mandate

With uncertainty looming and rumors of financial influence circulating, the question that weighs heavily on the minds of Nigerians is, "What options are left for the masses to reclaim their mandate?" Several possibilities have emerged:

1. Appeal to the Supreme Court: Some hope rests on the outcome of the appeals at the Supreme Court, where they could anticipate a reversal of the tribunal's verdict or a call for a fresh election. However, this path may be protracted and uncertain.

2. Peaceful Protest and Civil Disobedience: Peaceful demonstrations, rallies, marches, sit-ins, boycotts, and strikes offer a non-violent means to express grievances and pressure the government and INEC for change. Nevertheless, this avenue may face resistance and the risk of escalating into violence.

3. Dialogue and Negotiation: Engaging in dialogue and negotiation with the government and stakeholders could potentially lead to a political solution that respects the will of the people and ensures credible elections. However, past attempts at dialogue have left many disillusioned. Was it not rigorous and protracted dialogues that led to reforms and amendments to the electoral laws and institutions that introduced electronic voting and transmission of results via Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS), strengthening INEC's independence and accountability, and ensuring a level playing field for all party candidates? INEC simply did not play by the rules? And PEPT interpreted INEC's independence to mean impunity to flout electoral laws. This option may no longer be attractive to the civil society players for now

4. Resort to Violence and Rebellion: A more extreme path involves violent resistance, including guerrilla warfare, sabotage, assassination, or even a coup d'état to challenge the government's authority. However, this option may have severe consequences for the country's stability and security and may result in more bloodshed and suffering.

In the end, the choice lies with the masses themselves. Each option carries its own set of risks and consequences, and the decision must be made carefully while upholding the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. As Nigeria stands at a crossroads, the actions taken by the people will determine the nation's future.

NIGERIA AT 63: NOTHING LEFT TO CELEBRATE

Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and the world's sixth most populous, marks its 63rd anniversary of independence today, October 1, 2023. Many Nigerians, however, have little or nothing to take pleasure in or celebrate, as the country faces numerous issues that have destroyed its potential and possibilities.

Since gaining independence from Britain in 1960, Nigeria has been plagued by successive leadership failures, corrupt leaders who prioritize personal interests over public interest, poor infrastructure, a lack of health care facilities, insecurity, and economic woes; today, a dollar exchanges for over a thousand niara on the foreign exchange market. All of these factors have led to Nigeria's poor performance in different indicators of economic growth and development.

Nigeria's GDP per capita in 2020 was $2,229, putting it 149th out of 189 nations, according to the World Bank. In 2019, the country's human development index (HDI), which evaluates inhabitants' quality of life, was 0.539, ranking it 161st out of 189 countries. In 2020, the country ranked 131st out of 190 in the ease of doing business index, which evaluates the regulatory environment for enterprises.Nigeria

Moreover, Nigeria has been grappling with the problem of poverty and inequality for decades. According to the World Poverty Clock, Nigeria is the world's poverty capital, with about 105 million people living in extreme poverty as of October 2020. This means that more than half of the country's population survives on less than $1 per day. The poverty situation is worsened by the high rate of unemployment, which stood at 33.3% as of December 2020.

In addition to the economic challenges, Nigeria also faces security threats from various sources, such as the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, the banditry and kidnapping in the northwest, the farmer-herder clashes in the middle belt, oil theft in the Niger-delta and the separatist agitation in the southeast. These conflicts have claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of people from their homes.

Furthermore, Nigeria suffers from poor infrastructure and lack of basic amenities, such as electricity, water, roads, and health care. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nigeria's health system is ranked 187th out of 191 countries in terms of overall performance. The country has one of the lowest ratios of doctors to patients in the world, with about four doctors per 10,000 people. The country also has one of the highest maternal and child mortality rates in the world, with about 800 women dying from pregnancy-related causes per 100,000 live births and about 120 children dying before their fifth birthday per 1,000 live births.

Given these grim realities, it is hard to find any reason to celebrate Nigeria's independence anniversary. The country has failed to live up to its potential and aspirations as the giant of Africa and a leader in the continent. The country has also failed to deliver on its social contract with its citizens, who have been denied their basic rights and dignity.

Therefore, as Nigeria marks its 63rd year as a sovereign nation, it is time for its leaders and citizens to reflect on the past mistakes and failures and chart a new course for the future. It is time for Nigeria to embrace good governance, accountability, transparency, rule of law, and respect for human rights and shun all forms of electoral malpractices especially the type we saw in just concluded general election. It is time for Nigeria to invest in its human capital, infrastructure, security, and social welfare. It is time for Nigeria to unite and work together for a common goal of peace and prosperity. It is time for Nigeria to rise from its ashes and reclaim its glory and assert herself in the committee of nations.
