A 40-year-old man, Lanre Kazeem, allegedly committed suicide in the early hours of Sunday by hanging himself in his house at Eyin Grammar area of Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the deceased was living in a rented house, and worked in a private palm kernel company around Soka Ibadan.

The incident took many residents of the area by surprise as they expressed their sadness. The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer,(PPRO), SP Olugbenga Fadeyi, confirmed the incident to NAN on Sunday.

Some residents of the area, who spoke to NAN, said the deceased hailed from Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, and has no known relatives or friends all through his one-year stay in the rented house.

They said that the deceased left no suicide note behind to explain the cause of his action. Some of his neighbours claimed that the deceased had been sick for close to two weeks without any medical care.

Also speaking on the incident, the Chairman Eyin Grammar Landlords’ Association, Alhaji Lateef Adegoke, said the incident was reported to him in the morning and the police had taken the corpse to the mortuary.

The distraught father said it had been difficult for him to sleep as the entire incident still appears very unreal to him.

This week's WWE SmackDown began with a special memorial day video pack

John Morrison and The Miz kicked off this week's SmackDown with The Dirt Sheet. The Miz made fun of Otis by calling him a honey-baked ham and Morrison wasn't far behind with the insults.

Miz shifted his attention to Braun Strowman and he said that The Monster Among Men joining forces with Otis made no sense. The A-Lister felt that Strowman didn't deserve a shot at the Universal title against Goldberg at WrestleMania 36.

In a Dirt Sheet exclusive, previously unseen puppets of the Firefly Fun House were revealed on SmackDown. The mock puppets took shots at Strowman and 'Madiquin Rose' was one of the puppets.

Braun Strowman had seen enough of the puppet show and he interrupted the proceedings and made his way to the ring.

Strowman said that The Dirt Sheet wasn't that bad of a show before demanding Miz and Morrison to ask him about Bray Wyatt and his puppets. Miz highlighted the fact that Bray Wyatt may not be done with Strowman. Miz was reminded of his rivalry with Wyatt and he warned Strowman about how bad it can get.

Morrison challenged Strowman to a match on SmackDown on behalf of the Miz and Strowman readily accepted. The Miz didn't look too pleased but the first match of this week's episode of SmackDown was set.

Braun Strowman vs. The Miz

Strowman went for the clothesline but Miz ducked and connected with a right. Strowman didn't flinch and he began to double up on The A-Lister with a series of clubbing blows.

He sent Miz's head crashing into the turnbuckle, before sending him to the corner. Braun got Miz up, threw him into the ropes and took him out with a shoulder tackle.

Strowman flung Miz towards the ropes again but the Miz held onto it. Strowman rushed in and toppled over the ropes. Miz hit Braun with a knee before Morrison attacked the Universal Champion while the referee was distracted.

Miz was in control in the ring as he looked to rally towards the finish. Strowman mounted a quick comeback. He took Miz and Morrison out with a few strikes before setting up the Running Powerslam. The champ got the three-count and that's all she wrote.

Morrison challenged Braun Strowman to a handicap match for the Universal Championship at Backlash. Strowman confidently accepted the offer to end the opening segment of SmackDown.

Ukrainian Colonel Sentenced to 13 Years for Cooperating With Donbas Militants

Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv City has sentenced Colonel Ivan Bezyazykov, who is being accused of cooperating with Donbas militants, to 13 years in prison on April 7. This was reported by the Media Initiative for Human Rights.

Bezyazykov's lawyer Oleh Veremiienko said that the defense is going to appeal the sentence.

Bezyazykov stated that he never agreed to cooperate with the militants. According to him, the militants were forcing him to do certain jobs: work with papers, make phone calls, meet with certain people. But he assured that none of his actions had harmed either the state or its citizens.

Lawyers said the prosecutors did not provide any direct evidence of involvement in the terrorist organization and treason. No witness testified about his cooperation with the militants.

Bezyazykov was captured by the militants in August 2014. He and two other officers allegedly went to militants with a "white flag" to retrieve the bodies of the dead soldiers. But other militants captured them.

Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that Bezyazykov was freed during its special operation in July 2016. However, Bezyazykov’s wife said that her husband had been released in a secret exchange with the militants of the so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic” which the SBU had forbidden to talk about, not in a special operation.

Bezyazykov was arrested on suspicion of treason and accused of cooperating with militants of the "DPR" in December 2016. Since then, he has been in a pre-trial detention center.

According to the SBU, in captivity Bezyazykov had sided with the militants and was giving them information about the movement of the Ukrainian military. The SBU released recordings of colonel's alleged telephone conversations with the militants.

‘I don’t have time for this’ – Jurgen Klopp open up on mistake he made relating to Liverpool attacks

It isn’t often that Jurgen Klopp makes an error of judgement, but Liverpool’s manager has admitted he had the wrong first impression of a player that is now a current Reds sensation.

“I remember my first encounter with Sadio (Mane). It was in Dortmund,” Klopp said on the Made in Senegal documentary, and reported by the Daily Mirror.

“There was a really young guy sitting there. His baseball cap was askew, the blond streak he still has today. He looked like a rapper just starting out. I thought, ‘I don’t have time for this.’

“[…] I’d say I have a pretty good feeling for people, but was I wrong. I followed his further career and continuing success in Salzburg. In Southampton, he just dominated.”

The striker dominated to such an extent, that it left Klopp with no option but to want to sign him, and Mane has gone on to become a pivotal part of Liverpool’s three-pronged attack, alongside Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah.

It just goes to show that even the very best get it wrong sometimes, and Klopp surely wouldn’t be without the Senegalese now. Mane has developed into one of the Premier League’s most potent attackers, offering goals, assists and incredible pace which is a nightmare for opposition defences to deal with.

Signed for £34m in 2016, Mane is arguably worth at least double that in the current market, though Klopp would probably consider him priceless. And at 27 years of age, the striker is likely to still have hisbestbest.years ahead of him.

We are losing revenue at an unprecedented level’ – PL Chief Exec’s response to government

Premier League, Chief Executive, Richard Masters, has laid bare one of the problems with telling his member clubs to stop using the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme to pay non-playing staff who have been furloughed.

In a letter to the government’s DCMS Committee Chair, Julian Knight MP, seen by CaughtOffside, Masters noted his organisation were already feeling the pinch, just as many other organisations are, during what is a continuously evolving situation.

“We are losing revenue at an unprecedented level,” the letter stated. “[…] Premier League club finances are dependant upon the receipt of money from broadcast rights sales, distributed by the Premier League, as well as revenues generated by each Club from match day income and commercial sponsorships.

“With no matches being played, these resources have been temporarily halted.”

The letter also goes on to detail the work that the Premier League, its member clubs and players were doing in order to help the government in its drive to influence the public and keep them informed, and that has taken the form of social media messages, charitable initiatives and community assistance.

It will surely take time to find a solution that is workable for all parties in as much as it possibly can be, however, it’s abundantly clear that the longer there is no football being played, the bigger the financial burden on all concerned.

https://avalanches.com/ng/ibadan__covid19_why_nigeria_must_avoid_an_outbreak_though_africa_remains_o38582_25_03_2020

COVID-19: WHY NIGERIA MUST AVOID AN OUTBREAK

Though Africa remains one of the regions with fewest cases of the corona virus infection, the number of countries affected have however increased in recent weeks, with Nigeria having recorded 27 cases as at the time this was being written. While 40 cases is still relatively low, and Lagos state reporting that they are still trying to trace about 1300 contacts, it is imperative that stakeholders should be wary of a possible outbreak, a situation it appears we are not adequately prepared for.

The economic impact of an outbreak could be devastating. In a country where SMEs contribute about 45% of its GDP, 96% of its businesses and 84% of employment, a total economic gridlock will be extremely detrimental. Imagine people staying at home for weeks and businesses shutting down, that’s an open letter to hunger as unemployment and poverty would increase. Although the Central Bank has since taken measures to buffer the situation, this effort would be ineffective in case of an outbreak and complete lock-down.

The deplorable state of the health facilities, which is evident of the lack of commitment of the government to the health sector is another reason why we must avoid an outbreak. Isolation centers are not adequately equipped, they are only set up to handle just few cases and from previous experiences, we know the government are not proactive enough to be on top of the situation. If countries with better health indices could be overwhelmed, then we need to desperately stop an outbreak.

Another important factor is that we Nigerians are a highly sentimental people. In the past few days I have heard different conjectures about the possible cause of the infection. The most rampant being that the infection is not in Nigeria, the cases are only being faked by the government as a means to collecting money as aids from the international community. I wouldn’t blame them, trust in government is at its lowest ebb in Nigeria, resulting from years of bad governance. A government not trusted might not be respected, which could mean that orders are flagrantly flouted. Moreover, lots of sentiments are driven by religious and cultural beliefs. Some infected might not declare themselves, resorting to self-medication, thereby infecting others.

We really need to curtail an outbreak of this nefarious disease by every means possible. This cannot be done by the government alone, we all need to be responsive in combating it.

https://avalanches.com/ng/lagos_the_pandemic_has_affected_and_will_likely_continue_to_affect_house_hol6728721_16_11_2023

The pandemic has affected and will likely continue to affect house hold finances for years to come till we can recover . having a plan , prioritizing spending and use of resources efficiently will be a key to financial stability. Many families, businesses were affected due to the pandemic, firms laying off their staffs due to inability to harbour and pay them. But if the government and the citizens will work together we will recover quickly from the melt down caused by the pandemic. And looking at the positive lesson, this has brought change in the way individuals spend money on irrelevant things. People now manage their resources. And after this pandemic , if we maintain this it will help us save more and recover quick.

Economically/ Commerce:

The advent of technology and introduction of technology into commerce was to improve or aid the operation of businesses. After tackling Covid-19 (post-Covid19) I believe that there will be change in Nigeria commercial sector, which is going to help boost the nations economy. This change is based on we embracing technology and applying it in running our business. Before now we know that some business owner accepted cashless policy and the use of social media and soft-wares(apps and websites) to reach out to their customers. Buying and selling are made online even payments which made business easy. But not all entrepreneurs embraced that, most still prefer cash payments and face to face transaction.

Covid-19 has taught many how to use the internet and electronic devices to reach out to their customers both small, medium and large scale enterprises. Some firms ordered their staffs to work from home and some witnessed increase in their performance. After this pandemic some firms and entrepreneurs might still want to continue like that.

Power Sector:

During this pandemic the government have seen the need of steady electricity in the nation, we the citizens have been clamouring for that for long. It would have reduced the problem we are facing during this pandemic if we have steady power supply.

Epileptic power supply in Nigeria has been a problem to every sector of Nigeria economy ranging from business, education etc. It is one of the problem against E-learning in our country, no electricity for students and teacher(lecturers) to charge their devices or make use of their electronic devices which will help them access the internet for lectures. Though during the lock-down Nigeria government promised to give some free months power supply but that is not the major problem. The problem is how steady is the power supply.

We encountered many challenges during this pandemic and also it brought a lot of changes into the system. Government and individuals have lessons to learn from the shock and challenges Covid19 brought. I am using this medium to beckon on the government to take necessary actions in resolving the problems we are facing now by learning from the lessons Covid-19 brought. They should invest in education, health, agricultural sector, power sector etc, so we will not suffer all this challenges any longer.
