The chairperson of the Plateau Chapter of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalist (NAWOJ), Jennifer Yarima, has observed that women and girls living in houses without toilet facilities are more at risk of being raped.
She lamented that some rapists took advantage of the fact that most homes in some communities did not have toilets, as such found it easy to track down their victims.
Yarima revealed that NAWOJ had spoken with the Commissioner for Environment in Plateau on the need to ensure that houses had toilet facilities, adding that defecating in the open by females, aside from the health implications, provided opportunities for rapists.
The chairperson advised that parents should be mindful of people they entrusted their children to as most rape and abuse cases were usually carried out by such persons.
She also called on parents to educate their children on sex education, saying that if they failed to do so, peers and other people might do so in a wrong manner.
“We must educate our children as a family so that when they go to the society, they will know what act is wrong or right, and would also know how to control themselves outside.” she said.
She said that the culture of silence by most families when a member was raped, needed to be jettisoned as such act encouraged culprits to continue the heinous crime.
Recall that in July 2019, the Acting Managing Director of Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB), Mr Kefas Yilrwang, had lamented that some houses in Bukuru and Jos metropolis were built without toilet facilities.
Yilrwang had told newsmen that occupants of such houses simply located nearby bush or abandoned building structures, to ease themselves.
In an interview with NAN at that time, a female tenant (name withheld) had said she often went to nearby ‘bush’ to defecate, adding, “that is what most tenants in this area do.”
‘’It is not a new thing; we are used to it and we have accepted it because the house rent is very cheap and affordable to us.
“Some day, our income might improve to enable us secure accommodations with toilet facilities, but for now, this is what we can afford, ” she had said.
The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed through the second reading, two bills for the establishment of an Orthopaedic Hospital in Jos and a Federal Medical Centre in Wase, both in Plateau state.
Presenting the bill for the establishment of an Orthopaedic Hospital in Jos, Hon Wase said the Bill sought to amend the Orthopaedic Hospitals Management Board Act Cap.O10 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to provide for the establishment of the Orthopaedic Hospital Jos, Plateau State under the control of the Orthopedic Hospitals Management Board and affiliated to the Jos University Teaching Hospital to provide specialized Orthopaedic treatment and medical services”.
The Deputy speaker stated that Nigeria with a population of over 200 million persons has only three Orthopaedic hospitals as provided for by the Orthopedic Hospitals Management Board Act. “This, Mr Speaker, Hon. Colleagues, you will agree with me, is grossly inadequate”.
Hon Wase pointed out that it was imperative for an additional Orthopaedic Hospital to be established and sited in Jos in order to ease the burden on the three extant Orthopaedic Hospitals and to cater to the needs of the North Central zone, which does not have a single Orthopaedic Centre.
According to him, “it is our belief that, when there is an additional Orthopaedic Hospital in Jos, it will connect neighbouring States such as; Nasarawa, the FCT, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Benue and Taraba states thereby enabling more persons to access specialized orthopaedic treatment and medical services”
Speaking on the bill for the establishment of a medical centre in Wase, the Deputy Speaker lamented that despite the strategic location of Wase in Plateau state with its dense and growing population, it has no Tertiary Health facility to provide quality health services for its people.
According to him, “establishment of the Federal Medical Centre, Wase will go a long way to reduce the burden on the over-stretched Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) and other health facilities within the north-central and north-eastern part of the country, and people of Bauchi, Gombe, Jos south local area and part of Taraba state can easily access services in the facility”.
He noted that his constituents are in dire need of a medical centre to fill the huge gap and address the concern of those whose future will be guaranteed by establishing a federal medical centre.
According to him, “it is imperative to note that Wase as a geographic entity is located to connect the southern and northern Plateau zones and also connects to several neighbouring communities such as in several states including Bauchi, Nasarawa, Gombe and Taraba states
“Wase is also a rich economic zone harbouring rich deposits of mineral resources and of recent, federal government oil exploration activities which has been attracting both local and international investors to the constituency
“It is, therefore, only logical that a place of such strategic economic, cultural and geographic significance should have a health facility that can cater to the needs of its growing population”.
He further argued that “the ongoing fight against COVID-19 is testamentary to the fact that we as a nation, need more health facilities in order to adequately cater for the needs of our ever-growing population”
Hon Wase added that research had shown that tertiary health facilities make up only 0.25% of health facilities in the country noting that “the low number of tertiary health facilities per unit population can lead to a lengthy wait for specialized care”.
Both bills were passed and referred to the House committee on health institutions and health care services for further legislative action.
The Plateau State Government has confirmed that the Chief of Staff to the state governor, Noel Donjur, has tested positive for COVID-19.
The state’s Commissioner for Information confirmed the development in a statement on Friday.
Donjur’s status came days after the state’s Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Abe Aku, tested positive for the virus.
The statement reads, “The Chief of Staff to the Plateau State governor, Noel Donjur, has tested positive to COVID-19 after the test that was conducted for members of the state EXCO on 1st July, 2020 following the directive of Governor Lalong.
“The outcome of the tests indicate that all other members of the state EXCO tested negative except the Chief of Staff who is asymptomatic and in good condition.
“Accordingly, health officials have commenced treatment for him at one of the isolation centres in the state capital Jos, while members of his family and other contacts are being traced and tested.
“The Chief of Staff who is in high spirits urges prayers from members of the public and also encourages people to submit to COVID-19 testing which is very important in unveiling cases and leading to treatment.
“Meanwhile, other personal aides of the governor, permanent secretaries, heads of parastatals as well as other senior civil servants conducted the test on Thursday 2nd July, 2020 and are awaiting the results.”
The Plateau Commisioner for Health, Dr Nimkong Lar, on Sunday, said that 41 health workers had been infected with COVID-19 in the state, with eight deaths recorded.
According to him, the state has 330 confirmed cases of the disease out of the 4,076 tests carried out so far.
“We have received 3,471 results, with 605 pending. We have 99 in our isolation centres and 37 on home care,” Lar said.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the state COVID-19 Task Force, Gov. Simon Lalong, expressed worries over the increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the state.
Lalong, who was represented by the Secretary of the task force, who is also the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Danladi Atu, said that government was redoubling its enforcement efforts across the state.
He said that the enforcement would be concentrated more on the six local government areas with the highest prevalence of the disease.
“Commencing from June 29, the enforcement teams will wage a robust action on defaulters, whether citizens or organisations, particularly in the six local governments, including Jos North, Jos South, Barkin Ladi, Mangu, Kanam and Kanke.
“This enforcement will go simultaneously with public education campaign by health educators to further enlighten the citizens on the dangers of the disease and what to do to be protected,” he said.
The governor said that the enlightenment, which would be in the metropolis and rural areas, was in collaboration with the officials of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) stationed at the grassroots.
He said that the exercise was not to stigmatise people living in those local governments, but to contain the disease from spreading further among them.
Lalong called for the cooperation of residents in adhering to preventive guidelines for their safety, urging them to imbibe another pattern of life in consonance with the COVID-19 social behaviour.
Also speaking at the briefing, the state House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Health, Hon. Nanbol Listick, attributed the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases to the attitude and conduct of the residents.
He, however, expressed worries that the closure of boundaries within the affected six local governments, their socio-economic activities and cultural pattern had made them vulnerable.
“We may lockdown some local governments to contain further spread of the disease,” Listick said.
The lawmaker urged Plateau residents to engage health workers to get appropriate enlightenment on the disease to ensure their safety.
Newsmen report that Jos North Local Government has 177 cases; Jos South, 81; Barkin Ladi, 12 and Mangu, 10.
A cleric, Rev Tajan Moltok, the Jos Resident Pastor of Shepherd House Assembly International, has warned youths against involving in Kidnapping as a source of livelihood.
“Do not join them to be kidnappers; do not be in a hurry to build house or buy car. Do not be under pressure to do evil. Kidnapping may be the quickest way to make money, but the deadliest,” he said.
He urged the youths not to engage in evil ways of making quick money, stressing the need for hard-work, patience and godly lives.
“You must also strive to be educated so as to prepare yourselves for greater opportunities.
“You can come out of poverty by working hard. Look for how to get information that will help you,” he said.
Moltok said that power was the force of advancement and the ability to perform beyond human ability, adding that one could only become the son of God with such power.
“Power is the essence of divinity, it is the essential spiritualism,” he said.
The cleric said that power was required to become the sons of God and make wealth which would unlock potential and impact on lives while advancing the kingdom of God on earth.
He admonished the congregation not to come to God only when in trouble but be in his presence always because He is a Father and loves His children.
Newsmen reports that a special prayer was conducted against satanic powers frustrating the efforts of God’s children and breakthroughs in all endeavours.
Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong has charged Nigerians to support the Judiciary, particularly judges in the dispensation of justice and the sustenance of the rule of law which is key to the survival of democracy.
He said: “We are in a political era where there is pressure on the courts to interpret the law as it is and set the standards for orderly conduct in society.
“Both members of the bar and bench must do everything possible to safeguard the integrity of the Judiciary which is not only the hope of the common man as commonly referred to, but the hope of democracy, good governance and societal development.”
While eulogizing the many virtues of the retiring Judge, Lalong said: “For those who know Justice Julia Kyentu either within or outside the courtroom, the experiences may vary, but the testimony of her integrity, hard work, intellectual capacity and judicial depth is the same. Hon. Justice Julie Kyentu has over the years not only demonstrated her deep knowledge of the law and its application to the dispensation of justice, but has also shown courage to administer justice without fear or favour, affection or ill will.
“As a woman, Justice Kyentu is among the roll call of distinguished Plateau daughters who have broken the ceiling to establish the fact that women are more than capable of performing any function in society if given the opportunity.”
The Chief Judge of Plateau State, Hon. Justice Yakubu Gyang Dakwak, described Justice Kyentu as an astute judicial officer who put in her best in delivering justice to all manner of persons without fear or favour, adding that the Plateau Bench will miss her greatly and the vacuum created will be difficult to fill.
The Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Chrysanthus Ahmadu, and the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Jos Branch, Mr Yakubu Bawa, described the retiring justice as a woman of dignity and integrity who never succumbed to pressure from various quarters to subvert the cause of justice.
They added that her faith in God and adherence to the constitution and oath of office enabled her to carry out her assignment and finish without blemish.
Responding, Justice Kyentu thanked God for the opportunity and privilege to serve in the Judiciary in various capacities, and reaching the peak as the President of the state Customary Court of Appeal.
She said her experience over the years has reaffirmed her belief that God orders the steps of all his children and uses them in the way and manner he deems fit. She said despite all challenges, she was leaving the bench very fulfilled, and hoping that her successors will take the Judiciary to the next level.
Meanwhile, Lalong has approved the appointment of Justice Sati Patrick Dabit in her place in acting capacity.
