Amidst worsening security situation on the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja highway, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for immediate restoration of military checkpoints on the road.
He said that the incessant kidnappings and killings almost on a daily basis on the road by armed bandits necessitated the call.
Mr Jimoh gave kudos to the police for their efforts at checkmating the criminals but said that the establishment of military checkpoints will further reduce criminal activities on the road.
According to the statement, the Osara-Irepeni section of the road has become notorious for the activities of the men of the underworld.
Newsmen recall that on the same road, an army captain, G. S. M. Abubakar, was, on July 5, shot dead by bandits, who also kidnapped his wife and mother.
Newsmen also reports that the two kidnap victims have yet to regain their freedom.
Also on July 9, a naval officer and a woman travelling together in a Toyota Sienna car were killed by bandits at the same section of the road.
“The criminals, no doubt, have taken the advantage of the withdrawal of the military from the road to unleash mayhem on innocent road users, with deaths on its trail,” NUJ noted.
The union also advised the police to scale up their operations by introducing 24-hour patrol of the road.
“The idea of creating roadblocks and preoccupying themselves with checking of vehicle particulars should be discouraged.
“The criminals take advantage of these lapses by striking in-between police roadblocks,” it said.
The union also urged the state government to rise up to the new wave of criminal activities across the state.
It said that the current upsurge in crime should not be allowed to rubbish the modest achievements recorded by the state government.
“The fight should be taken to the criminals in their various hideouts instead of waiting for them to strike before taking actions,” he said.
The Federal Government through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development is to distribute 19, 508 bags of fertilizers to farmers affected by 2018 flooding in five LGAs of Kogi State.
She said the distribution of the about 19, 508 bags of fertilizers was on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari which she said would be distributed to the affected farmers in five Local Government Areas in the State.
The Deputy Governor of the State, Edward David Onoja, who flagged off the distribution on behalf of the Governor commended President Muhammadu Buhari, for the great gesture through the relevant ministries, departments and agencies of the federal government.
He promised that the fertilizers would be effectively utilized and distributed accordingly as specified by the minister in the affected five LGAs.
Also flagged off, was the roll out of Agricultural inputs to be distributed to farmers nationwide as parts of the Federal Government’s palliatives against the effects of Covid-19 pandemic.
In his remarks, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alh. Muhammed Sabo Nanono, said the agricultural inputs was parts of the federal government’s palliatives to cushion the effects of Covid-19 pandemic on food and nutrition, and security of the nation.
The Minister urged the beneficiaries to use the agricultural inputs judiciously to make food abundantly available in the country in order to defeat the negative impacts of Covid-19 co in the country.
Also present at the occasion was the Director-General of NEMA, Air Vice Marshal Muhammadu Muhammed rtd, officials of both the Ministries of Agriculture and Humanitarian Affairs.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the Appeal Court judgement on the Kogi governorship election delivered on Saturday as a travesty of justice.
“Gov. Yahaya Bello and the APC can run, but it cannot hide from the Supreme Court, where the blood of the innocent people killed in the Kogi Election and the irregularities that characterized the election would be pointed out.”
Ogunmola urged PDP supporters to remain calm and be hopeful. The PDP said the party will never give up until justice is delivered and Engr Musa Wada becomes the Governor of Kogi State, particularly that he was overwhelmingly voted for in the November governorship election.
Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has described the judiciary as the last hope of the common man.
This follows the Appeal Court’s decision affirming his victory at the November 16 governorship poll.
Newsmen had earlier reported that the Court of Appeal in Abuja on Saturday affirmed the governor’s re-election after dismissing four appeals challenging his victory at the poll.
In separate judgments all of which were unanimous, the five-man panel of the court led by Justice Adamu Jauro dismissed the four appeals for lacking in merit.
The appeals dismissed were filed by the Peoples Democratic Party, the Actions People’s Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Democratic People’s Party.
Among the four appeals, the one filed by the PDP along with its governorship candidate, Musa Wada, was the most keenly fought.
Reacting to the development via a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Onogwu Muhammed, the governor described the Saturday’s judgment as “outstandingly and astoundingly thorough”, stating that the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man.
Bello said, “The rule of law once again came to the defense of democracy by affirming the collective will of the people of Kogi State which was expressed in such decisive fashion on the 16th of November, 2019.”
He called on Kogi indigenes to join his administration in moving the state forward while reiterating his resolve to accommodate all interests in the state.
Governors elected on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party has responded to a claim by Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, that 10 of them were preparing to decamp to the All Progressives Congress.
In a statement by Director-General of PDP Governors Forum, C.I.D. Maduabum, on Saturday, the state executives cautioned Bello to concentrate on delivering good governance to the people of Kogi.
The PDP governors said, “This statement does not merit any response but for the fact that it may demoralise PDP members and Nigerians who are not aware of the facts.
“The PDP governors are very focused on delivering good governance and the benefits of democracy to their respective states and working tirelessly to strengthen and reposition the party.
“There is no attraction whatsoever for any PDP member not to talk of a PDP governor to join the APC, a party bedeviled by crises, without even an elected leadership as envisaged by Section 223 of the 1999 constitution that specifically requires the executive committee of every political party in Nigeria to be democratically elected."
The Kogi State House of Assembly has lost one of its members, John Abah.
He was a lawmaker representing Ibaji Constituency in the Assembly where he was serving a second term.
Abah died on Wednesday in an Abuja hospital after a protracted illness.
Governor Yahaya Bello has expressed sadness over the death of the lawmaker.
Bello in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Onogwu Muhammed, described the late Abah as a loyal and dedicated stalwart of the All Progressives Congress in the state whose contributions to the stability and growth of the party remain overwhelming.
Abdulateef Suleiman, Personal Assistant to Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, is dead.
Chief Press Secretary to Governor Bello, Onogwu Muhammed, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.
Muhammed said Suleiman died after a brief illness.
“The deceased had been on admission at a private hospital in Abuja for the treatment of septic shock but died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday morning at the age of 41.
“He will be buried later on Wednesday according to Islamic funeral rites.”
The police have released Mr Abdulmumuni Danga, Kogi State Commissioner for Water Resources, who assaulted and raped a lady over a Facebook post after pressure from Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi.
The police would however, be charging Danga to court within three weeks.
SaharaReporters had earlier reported that Danga was interrogated at the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Gender Unit, Force Intelligence Bureau, FCID, Abuja.
He wrote a statement after intense persuasion from the police.
After about four hours at the FCID, the police released Danga, allowing him to walk freely out of the station without assurance of him returning when summoned, a source at the police FCID told SaharaReporters.
“After interrogation, the police allowed him to go. He was pestered to write a statement. The statement would be added to the evidence that has been collected and he would be charged to court within three weeks,” the source said.
The victim identified as Elizabeth, had in a posted on her Facebook wall urged the commissioner to assist his kid sister and other members of his family financially.
Speaking with SaharaReporters, Elizabeth said she decided to make the Facebook post following series of complaints by the commissioner’s sister to her.
The post did not go down well with the commissioner, who hired a thugs to seize Elizabeth from her home in Lokoja with her three-year-old son.
“On getting there, they flogged me. He flogged us himself, stripped me naked and made a video of me threatening to post it when next I make any public comment about it,” she said.
Narrating how the commissioner raped her, she said Danga held her captive and took her to a hotel at night where he forcefully had sex with her.
She expressed fear for her life, revealing that she and her family members were receiving threats from loyalists and thugs of the commissioner.
