Tragedy struck on Thursday in Gurmana town of Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State as a canoe conveying locals fleeing from bandits’ attacks capsized.
SaharaReporters gathered that all passengers in the canoe drowned during the incident.
“As a proactive measure, the victims upon hearing about the terrorists’ attacks on adjoining villages decided to run for their lives but the boat they were using capsized due to strong waves.
Niger State has witnessed a series of attacks by suspected bandits in recent times, leading to scores of deaths.
More than 2,000 people have fled their villages in Shiroro Local Government Area after bandits' attack left more than 100 people killed and several more injured during a recent incident.
A70-year-old man, Mohammed Sani Umar (Tela), has raped an eight-year-old girl in Chanchaga area of Minna, Niger State.
Umar raped the girl twice before giving her N80 not to tell anybody about the incident.
The mother of the girl noticed her abnormal behaviour, which made her question the girl before she revealed that the septuagenarian defiled her.
“After some days, she saw some stains in her underwear and asked her what happened to her.
“The little girl took the mother to his place and on reaching there, she just pointed at him.
“On sighting the woman and the girl, he started begging them to cover it up so he will take responsibility,” Abubakar, the girl's uncle, narrated.
He said Umar was beaten by angry members of the community before he was interrogated and handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
“The woman started crying and shouted for help. People came around, dragged him to the family house, where he was beaten and confessed that he had sex with her twice.
“He said that he gave her N50 once and another N30 the second time.
“We took him to the police custody and handed him to the police to charge him to court,” Abubakar added.
The family appealed to the police to handle the matter professionally as they expressed fear that the police could sweep the case under the carpet as Umar is influential in the society.
“The Divisional Police Officer said the case would be forwarded to the state command on Monday.
“We want the police to do the right thing because the man is very influential and has some people who usually bail criminals arrested by the police.
“He knows the rich people in the community and there is a possibility they would conspire with the police to release the man and sweep the matter under the carpet.
“The police should ensure justice is served right in this case,” the family urged.
Niger State House of Assembly (NSHA) has demanded detailed account; including monies budgeted for by the state government and the various sums of money donated by Nigerlites for the control of the spread of CoronaVirus (COVID-19) in the state.
Niger State COVID-19 taskforce informed the legislature how it spent N795, 015, 000 so far on its activities while a different amount was stated for similar equipment purchase by the Ministry of health, this the House Committee on Health is demanding explanations.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Maku-sidi appeared before the House Committee on Health to explain why corona virus has continued to spread, in Chanchaga (Minna) metropolis in particular despite huge sums spent on drugs and equipment.
“Some things are conflicting from the presentations the chairman of the COVID-19 task force made last week and the document presented today by the chairman,” the House Committee Chairman on Health, Hon. Maliki Madaki declared.
According to Hon. Madaki, “He told us last week that they have spent N795, 015, 000 so far including the, N85 million paid to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for power supply during the lockdown but he backtracked today telling us that the N85 million wasn’t part of their expenses”.
The House Committee on Health also observed, “We also discovered that the N808, 636, 000 was the amount spent from the document presented while N76 million spent for the fumigation of the entire state wasn’t part of the total amount”.
Efforts by the Secretary to State Government (SSG) and Chairman State Committee on COVID-19, Alhaji Ibrahim Matane to assuage the legislators with claims that identified errors were ‘computational’ failed to yield desired results, as they demanded for details of income and expenditure.
The Committee insisted on having rectifications and accurate figures presented before further discussions can hold on the subject matter after querying how N190 million and N795, 015, 000 were utilized by the State Ministry of Health to procure equipment for Covid-19 treatment.
Hon. Madaki who insists that the committee is not in anyway out to witch-hunt anyone but to ensure that state monies were accurately accounted for said, “The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Makusidi while he was being quizzed told us that his Ministry had spent over N190 million on equipments for the treatment and containment of covid-19 and we are hearing a different figure from the COVID-19 Taskforce Committee”.
“On the other hand the State Committee on COVID-19 taskforce last week told the House that it spent N795, 015, 000 on its activities, with a different amount stated for same equipment purchase. There’s a missing link and that is why we want a thorough job”.
NIGERIA AT 63: NOTHING LEFT TO CELEBRATE
Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and the world's sixth most populous, marks its 63rd anniversary of independence today, October 1, 2023. Many Nigerians, however, have little or nothing to take pleasure in or celebrate, as the country faces numerous issues that have destroyed its potential and possibilities.
Since gaining independence from Britain in 1960, Nigeria has been plagued by successive leadership failures, corrupt leaders who prioritize personal interests over public interest, poor infrastructure, a lack of health care facilities, insecurity, and economic woes; today, a dollar exchanges for over a thousand niara on the foreign exchange market. All of these factors have led to Nigeria's poor performance in different indicators of economic growth and development.
Nigeria's GDP per capita in 2020 was $2,229, putting it 149th out of 189 nations, according to the World Bank. In 2019, the country's human development index (HDI), which evaluates inhabitants' quality of life, was 0.539, ranking it 161st out of 189 countries. In 2020, the country ranked 131st out of 190 in the ease of doing business index, which evaluates the regulatory environment for enterprises.Nigeria
Moreover, Nigeria has been grappling with the problem of poverty and inequality for decades. According to the World Poverty Clock, Nigeria is the world's poverty capital, with about 105 million people living in extreme poverty as of October 2020. This means that more than half of the country's population survives on less than $1 per day. The poverty situation is worsened by the high rate of unemployment, which stood at 33.3% as of December 2020.
In addition to the economic challenges, Nigeria also faces security threats from various sources, such as the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, the banditry and kidnapping in the northwest, the farmer-herder clashes in the middle belt, oil theft in the Niger-delta and the separatist agitation in the southeast. These conflicts have claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of people from their homes.
Furthermore, Nigeria suffers from poor infrastructure and lack of basic amenities, such as electricity, water, roads, and health care. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nigeria's health system is ranked 187th out of 191 countries in terms of overall performance. The country has one of the lowest ratios of doctors to patients in the world, with about four doctors per 10,000 people. The country also has one of the highest maternal and child mortality rates in the world, with about 800 women dying from pregnancy-related causes per 100,000 live births and about 120 children dying before their fifth birthday per 1,000 live births.
Given these grim realities, it is hard to find any reason to celebrate Nigeria's independence anniversary. The country has failed to live up to its potential and aspirations as the giant of Africa and a leader in the continent. The country has also failed to deliver on its social contract with its citizens, who have been denied their basic rights and dignity.
Therefore, as Nigeria marks its 63rd year as a sovereign nation, it is time for its leaders and citizens to reflect on the past mistakes and failures and chart a new course for the future. It is time for Nigeria to embrace good governance, accountability, transparency, rule of law, and respect for human rights and shun all forms of electoral malpractices especially the type we saw in just concluded general election. It is time for Nigeria to invest in its human capital, infrastructure, security, and social welfare. It is time for Nigeria to unite and work together for a common goal of peace and prosperity. It is time for Nigeria to rise from its ashes and reclaim its glory and assert herself in the committee of nations.
