TINUBU'S EMERGENCE: Federal lawmaker commends APC for examplifing good democracy

By Samuel Vincent

The All Progressives Congress APC has been commended for setting a good example of democracy in Nigeria to the world.

Member representing Oshodi/Isolo II federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ganiyu Johnson in a statement made available to press on Thursday says the party's presidential primary, which saw the emergence of former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu as the presidential candidate of the APC was thorough and a demonstration of the will of its members in sustaining democracy.

Hon. Johnson urged Tinubu to forget about the hurdles presented to him by his adversary in the build up to the primary, adding that the challenges were normal in participatory democracy.

While congratulating Bola Tinubu for his victory at the presidential primary, the lawmaker pointed out that the country was on its way to getting the practice of democracy right, particularly that the differences and confusion which would have marred the primary were harmonized in line with the amended Electoral Act.

The statement said: "Before and midway into the primary election for the presidential aspirants, there were confusion as to the mode of election.

"As members of the APC, we didn't know whether it would be consensus or indirect election, but then those who meant well for the party insisted on the rule of law; they insisted on due process in light of the Electoral Act as amended. The consideration of what the law stipulated forced the party into the delegates election and after the exercise, nobody among the aspirants is aggrieved.

"There was fairness and a level playing field was created for all aspirants to test their popularity. Going forward, the party has set a good example of democracy", Hon. Johnson said.

He called on the flag bearer to immediately reach out to all the aspirants and unite further, the party faithful across the six geopolitical zones of the country in readiness for the general election, noting that there was no dull moment after winning the primary election.

Tunde Thomas: Why did you choose death?

By Samuel Vincent

(NB: this is not a new article. I wrote this when the issue was still trending but forgot to share. Enjoy your read)

In line with the teachings of my faith, Christianity, the dead are never questioned but I can't say with certainty whether this is the case with other faiths. Though, as Christians, we believe in life after death, we don't believe a mortal from this material world can communicate with the dead.

Few days ago, I came across this headline on, "Paternity scandal: 45-yr-old man dies after his wife told him their 2 kids belong to FCMB MD." And ever since I read the headline, I've had sleepless nights thinking about what should really make a man kill himself. Because I could not find a satisfactory answer and because I am in pain, I am forced to turn to the deceased, Late Tunde and ask, "why did you choose death over life?"

Because your wife jilted you; Because she slept with your boss and had babies for him and deceived you into caring and training the children thinking they were yours and because she finally dumped you? But from a Christian perspective, this wasn't enough for you to kill yourself. Tunde, wherever you are on the other side, know this, these reasons are only enough to get angry. They are sufficient to have regrets and at least resent your wife for some time but they are not good enough reasons for you to slip into depression and die.

I know it's hard to comprehend the situation. It is difficult to accept that the children you once called your children aren't yours but that of your boss! I know it is painful to imagine your boss sleeping with your wife to the extent that she had two kids with him and you were deceived to take custody of the children. l know it is heartbreaking to know that she might have slept with him countless times! More painful is that she seems proud of her actions. Tunde, I know it hurts but never sufficient reasons for you to give up on life.

I wonder if you, Tunde, had by chance read the passage of the Holy Bible wherein Christians are admonished to choose life over death.

The Holy Bible in Deuteronomy chapter 30 verse 19 says, "...I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live." This passage wants everyone to love life and live life to the fullest because life is good.

Tunde, you would have chosen life because your death means nothing to your wife, Moyo Thomas. You would have chosen life because she never loved you from the start. You would have chosen life because you would have found another lady that would have loved you better. You would have chosen life because you were too young to die. But it's sad you slipped into depression and died.

I know some love pundits would say, "I'd rather die than watch my man or woman sleep with another man or woman". Others would say, "I can't stand the sight of my wife's infidelity." But I beg to differ, I would rather start all over again. Tunde had a choice to live but he gave that choice up - too bad.

Let me say this, I am not married! I know some of you readers would say, "he lacks experience. He is a boy. If he were married he wouldn't dare vomit this nonsense." But let me remind all you who can't stand your wife's infidelity, the words of Greek's Stoic Philosopher, Epictetus, "It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”

That your wife or husband cheated on you is the objective reality but that you decide to kill yourself or move on is the subjective choice. There are countless men who know other men that are dating their wife's. Some even caught their wives in the act! Similarly, there are countless women who also know other women who are sleeping with their husbands. While some victims of this infidelity are still living with their spouses, others have moved on to get another wife to start all over again. Tunde, you had an alternative choice.

If I may ask, did you think of your mother before allowing yourself to get depressed? Have you forgotten that your siblings love you and would have preferred you to move on? You also forgot that you kinsmen and friends still need a great man like you? Didn't you know that there were ladies even more beautiful than your wife, Moyo, that loved you and were waiting for you to love them in return? Though I don't know you, didn't you know I would have preferred you alive? You have hurt a lot of people. Your wife hurts you but you in turn hurt a lot of us.

Now that you're gone, the women that caused your death have moved on with no iota of regret. Her alleged accomplice, the Managing Director of First City Monument Bank, FCMB, Adams Nuru will also move on. I learnt that he has been asked to proceed on forced leave but I doubt if that will mean anything to him. If FCMB eventually finds him culpable, the worst that will happen is to relieve him of his duties. Nobody will kill him and no law would hang him. If you had asked me, I would have advised you against getting into depression and untimely dying. But since you're gone, to all who may be facing a similar situation, please move on! Don't kill yourself - it is needless.
