Navy seizes vessel, arrests five suspects for illegal bunkering in Akwa Ibom

The Nigerian Navy Ship Jubilee (NNS) on Tuesday said that it has seized a vessel used for oil bunkering and arrested five suspects in Akwa Ibom.

The Commander of NNS Jubilee, Commodore Majid Ibrahim, disclosed this to newsmen during the handing over of the vessel and suspects to officials of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Ikot Abasi.

Ibrahim said that the vessel was seized during an anti illegal oil patrol by the Nigerian Navy along Uta-Ewa Creek on May 18.

“In line with the Chief of Naval Staff’s strategic directive and the need to secure Nigeria’s maritime domain against all forms of illegalities, the Nigerian Navy Ship Jubilee on anti illegal oil patrol arrested MT PREYOR 1 on May 18, 2020 along Uta-Ewa Creek for suspected illegal oil bunkering activities.

“The vessel was laden with unspecified quantity of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

“As required by the Harmonized Standard Operating Procedure, the suspects, vessel and products are hereby handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation and possible prosecution,” Ibrahim said.

The commander said that the command would not relent in it fight against maritime crimes and criminalities.

He warned persons involved in criminal activities within the coastal waters to look for legitimate means of livelihood or relocate as the command would continue to arrest them and hand them over to relevant security agencies for prosecution.

The commander commended the Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, for providing all the moral and logistics support required to achieve the feat.

He urged the media to sensitise the public on the need to cooperate with the security forces in the fight against all forms of criminalities.

Receiving the vessel, products and the five suspects on behalf of EFCC, Mr Victor Ikang, Head Extractive Industry, Fraud Section, Uyo Zonal office thanked the Navy for the arrest.

He assured that the commission would investigate the case thoroughly to bring all culprits to book.

“I receive the vessel alongside with the suspects. We thank the Nigerian Navy for being a partner in the fight against Economic Crimes.

“We assure the Navy that we will carry out further investigation and make sure that culprits are brought to book,” he said.

Akwa Ibom communities lament NDDC neglect

The oil-producing communities of Eastern Obolo in Akwa Ibom State have lamented that the region has been neglected and marginalised despite contributing most of the oil revenue in the state.

The communities said that they have been deprived in many spheres, including denial of appointments and allocation of projects and resources by the Niger Delta Development Commission.

In a statement on Sunday the communities led by their President, Ken Ukoima, alleged that Eastern Obolo is the only core oil-producing community of the state that had yet to have an indigene on the board of the NDDC since it was established.

They called on President Mohammadu Buhari to give the region the opportunity to serve on the board of the NDDC especially now that the position has been vacant following the demise of the Commission’s director of finance and administration, Ibanga Etang.

The statement reads in part, “We wish to bring to the attention of Mr President the arrant and sordid disregard for fairness and equity in the appointment of members into the board of the Commission.

“Recall that the NDDC arose from the ashes of the OMPADEC in 2000. The Act establishing the Commission clearly stipulates that the Board shall consist of, amongst others, a Chairman and one person who shall be an indigene of an oil-producing area to represent each of the member states.

“It also provides for the appointment of a Managing Director and two executive directors. As the largest oil-producing state, Akwa Ibom has served as Chairman, Managing Director, in addition to four executive directors at different points in time in the Commission.

“But since the establishment of the NDDC no indigene of Eastern Obolo has been appointed to serve on the board of the Commission

“Agonizingly, Eastern Obolo is the only core oil-producing area in Akwa Ibom State that has never served on the board of the NDDC in any capacity. Yet, it is the largest oil-producing area in the state.

“The neglect and oppression of Eastern Obolo are not only in the denial of appointment in the state but also in the allocation of the resources and projects within the state by the NDDC and the state government as well.

“This was presented in a statement of protest by the chiefs and people of Eastern Obolo on January 23, 2016.

“The good people of Eastern Obolo shall forever be grateful if your wind of change will blow into Akwa Ibom State and overturn the wicked and obnoxious machinations of the ignoble potentates and give Eastern Obolo the opportunity to serve on the board of the NDDC now as Akwa Ibom still have a chance to produce a director.”

NDLEA arrests 273 suspects, prosecutes 15 in Akwa Ibom

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Akwa Ibom State Command, said it has arrested 273 drug traffickers and prosecuted 15 suspects in the state.

This was disclosed by the state Commander of the agency, Malami Sokoto, at a media briefing held in Uyo, the state capital, to mark the 2020 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with the theme “Better knowledge for better Care”.

He said 25 drug traffickers had been rehabilitated in the state.

“Out of 273 drug traffickers, 204 have been counselled on the negative effects of drugs, 15 others prosecuted while five persons are currently awaiting trial,” he said.

Sokoto observed that traffickers do not consume the dangerous substances they sell, they were only attracted to the financial gains from it, adding that drugs are abused when taken without doctors’ prescription.

“Drug abuse starts when parents sometimes fail in their responsibility of providing good upbringing for their children who begin to abuse drugs due to proper influence and pressure groups,” Sokoto said.

Navy Captain, Peter Gambo Yilme, Tortures, Kills Young Man Over Generator Theft Allegation In Akwa Ibom State

Peter Gambo Yilme, Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy, Forward Operating Base, Ibaka, Akwa Ibom State, has tortured a man to death for allegedly stealing generators, SaharaReporters has gathered.

Trouble started when on June 13 some portable generator sets were stolen from the Forward Operating Base and a suspect identified as Tony was arrested over the incident.

Tony, SaharaReporters found out, was then brought to the base on the orders of Yilme, who oversaw his torture.

"They tied him up like a goat and beat the boy up mercilessly even after he said he didn't steal the generators. The boy was shouting helplessly, saying he was not a thief.

"Yilme put pepper on his broken skin and locked him up in a cell where he died hours later," a source, who witnessed the dehumanisation of the young man before his eventual death, told SaharaReporters.

"He (Yilme) is not remorseful. To him, it's like he has killed a chicken. This is not the first time he is overseeing the killing of boys in our community," the source added.

Members of the community called on the Nigerian Navy and government to investigate Yilme for the gross human rights violations he commits in the area.

Akwa Ibom seals Christ Embassy Church

The Akwa Ibom State government said it has sealed off the headquarters of the popular pentecostal church, Christ Embassy, in Uyo.

The Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Emmanuel Ekuwem, said the church’s pastors and members “attacked and brutalised” COVID-19 monitoring team who were at the church on Sunday to monitor compliance with the guidelines and protocols adopted to prevent community spread of coronavirus in the state.

The monitoring team comprises government officials and officials of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

“In response to this act of lawlessness by that church and in order to avoid the risk of community transmission of COVID-19 in Akwa Ibom State, the Christ Embassy Church building and premises are hereby sealed up with immediate effect till further notice,” Mr Ekuwem said in the statement.

“The suspected pastors and relevant members of the church will be made to face the wrath of the law,” he added.

Christ Embassy has, however, refuted the claims made by the Akwa Ibom government.

The government, the church said in a statement, acted “based on tissues of lies and absolute falsehood that only occurred in the figment of the imaginations of those peddling same”.

The statement, signed by Kelvin James, a pastor, said the church was already done with its Sunday service when the monitoring team arrived, and that a church worker who filmed the arrival of the team was assaulted and a church camera confiscated from him.

The church said it adhered to the guidelines by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control in its Sunday service.

One of their pastors, it said, has been detained by the police on the instruction of the Akwa Ibom government.

Christ Embassy said the crisis was instigated against it because of its refusal to be a member of CAN.

“While we are not against the state government carrying out its statutory duties, we state with all amount of humility that Christ Embassy Church has existed in our dear state for over twenty five years without any issue with any of the past governments or any association, rather we have contributed immensely to the development of the state through our several people oriented projects and word based ministry.

“We have been partners in development with the Akwa Ibom State Government and chosen to remain bipartisan at all times.

“We totally condemn the closing down of our Church and detention of our Pastor, Pastor Emmanuel Effiong, who has been detained by the Commissioner of Police, without giving us the right to fair hearing and state that this action is borne out of malice, deep seated hatred and calculated attempt to malign the Church for disassociating herself from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

“We call on the Akwa Ibom State Government to unconditionally release Pastor Emmanuel Effiong, the church camera which captured a true reflection of what transpired today and withdraw the order closing our Church,” Mr James said, in the statement.

The church’s founder, Chris Oyakhilome, has been one of the vocal Nigerian clerics who have kicked against the stringent restrictions placed by the authorities on worship centres in the wake of the pandemic and also criticised church response.

He recently attracted criticisms when he linked the controversial 5G technology to COVID-19.

Akwa Ibom elders accuse President Buhari of corruption, nepotist

Akwa Ibom leaders, under the umbrella body of Akwa Ibom Leaders Vanguard, on Monday blasted President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged perceived corruption, nepotism and frequent abuse of constitution in his government.

The elders said the country was on the verge of disintegration and anarchy due to lopsided political appointments which favoured only the Northern section of the country.

In a statement signed by the coordinator, Senator Anietie Okon and made available to newsmen, the elders expressed dismay over the poor handling of FG’s palliatives and urged the National Assembly to investigate the process, especially the ones allegedly sent down to the South-South.

The group also noted that the hyped school feeding programme of the FG when Children are at home due to Covid-19 pandemic was a heartless rape of the nation’s resources

The Statement reads in parts, “The National Assembly should carefully investigate the handling of the COVID-19 palliatives by the aides of the President for Akwa Ibom State and other States where the supposed funds and other palliative meant for the poor and vulnerable disappeared on transit.

“We are sincerely concerned over the over hyped ongoing school feeding programme by the Incumbent administration when the pupils are still on forced break owing to the menace of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We found this claim repulsive, extremely fraudulent and heartless raping of the nation’s scarce resources.”

The group alleged that the Federal Government was shrouded with opacity, adding that the inability of the government to account for the millions of dollars of Abacha loot repatriated into the country, was an indication that the administration was neck deep in corruption.

They said the President should as a matter of urgency forestall the rising angst among Nigerians by discontinuing the pursuit of sectional agenda in appointments into public offices, alleging that the incumbent administration had carefully and consciously concentrated the entire leadership of Nigeria’s security architecture on only the Northern section of the country to the detriment of the entire Southern region.

They further said the Federal Government should as a matter of

justice and equity accord adequate recognition to Akwa Ibom owing to its enormous contribution to the National treasury, by appointing her sons/daughters into the NNPC management and board and its other major subsidiaries, including other major public offices.
