Residents of 300 houses were evacuated.

The residents of the city of Ashburton also got it. Local Mayor Neil Brown told reporters that half of the houses were affected. Evacuation was required for almost half of the 35 thousand inhabitants.

Grateful New Zealanders celebrate the impeccable work of the rescuers. Not a single person died.

New Zealand authorities on Tuesday announced the country's return to a tough lockdown, after the first case of local coronavirus infection was detected for the first time in six months.

Several cases of infection are recorded in the country every day, but so far, recently, all of them have been detected in people who have arrived from abroad. Now the virus has been identified in a nurse at a nursing home in Oakland. Nine more cases of infection were announced on Wednesday.

University of Otago and UK researchers have developed a world-first weight-loss device to help fight the global obesity epidemic.

DentalSlim Diet Control is an intra-oral device fitted by a dental professional to the upper and lower back teeth. It uses magnetic devices with unique custom-manufactured locking bolts. It allows the wearer to open their mouths only about 2mm, restricting them to a liquid diet, but it allows free speech and doesn’t restrict breathing.

Participants in a Dunedin-based trial lost an average of 6.36kg in two weeks and were motivated to continue with their weight loss journey.

Parliament unanimously supported the decision to provide mothers and their partners with three days of leave if there was a miscarriage or the child was born still.

The bill was presented by Labor MP Ginny Andersen.

Such a bill will allow parents who have not survived the birth of a baby to “come to terms with the loss” by using their legal right to leave.

At about 8:30 am, the first earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 occurred. This happened near the Kermadec Islands.

After that, meteorologists canceled the message about a possible tsunami. The situation after the second earthquake has not changed. But after the third earthquake, sirens began to sound in some areas, signaling the approach of a tsunami.

After that, the authorities decided on an emergency evacuation.

Conservation officials who arrived at the scene found ninety-seven grindas (black dolphins) and three bottlenose dolphins that were already dead.

Another 26 mammals were alive, but very weak, so they had to be euthanized.

Diver and marine photographer Sam Wilde said that the Chatham Archipelago is a remote place, so there are not many people around. And when the dolphins were discovered, the radio call was transmitted to only a few people.

He also added that divers should stay out of the water when dolphins land on shore because the area is home to a population of great white sharks that can attack people in search of carcasses.

There were seven satellites aboard the private rocket Electron, all of which were designed to survey the Earth's surface.

In New Zealand, an unsuccessful launch of an Electron rocket took place. The mission, according to the tradition of the private company Rocket Lab, bore the original name Pics Or It Didn't Happen ("either show the photo, or there was nothing") - due to the fact that there were satellites on board to monitor the Earth's surface; in other words, equipment for photography and video filming.

Shortly before the upper stage was disconnected from the second stage of the rocket and at about the moment of the "hot" switching of the batteries, a certain anomaly occurred. A few minutes later, the company reported that the mission had failed due to a problem "at the end of the second stage," that is, almost at the final stage. Due to the failure to enter the planned orbit, the second stage with the upper stage and satellites will soon burn up in the atmosphere when falling back to Earth. The company later added that the problem was observed already from the 4th minute of the flight.

On board were five latest generation SuperDove satellites (Flock 4e) from Planet, the operator of the world's largest Earth observation orbital constellation. The company's almost continuous stream of imagery helps scientists, students, businesses and governments identify patterns in various large-scale processes on the planet's surface, catch early signs of change and, as a result, make timely decisions. These five new devices were equipped with even better optics and software.
