Climate refers to a location's overall weather conditions over a long period of time. Maine's climate, for example, is cold and snowy in the winter, whereas South Florida's climate is tropical all year. Climate change is defined as a significant change in average weather conditions over several decades or longer—for example, circumstances becoming warmer, wetter, or drier. Climate change is distinguished from normal weather fluctuation by this longer-term trend. While the terms "climate change" and "global warming" are frequently interchanged, global warming—the recent rise in the global average temperature near the earth's surface—is only one facet of climate change.

What is the root of global warming?

The earth's climate system can be influenced by a range of natural and human-caused variables. The sun's intensity, volcanic eruptions, and naturally occurring greenhouse gas concentration fluctuations are all factors that contribute to climate change. However, records show that today's climatic warming—particularly since the mid-twentieth century—is much more rapid.
