Man, who served 27 years in prison, found innocent in China
Zhang Yuhuan spent most of his life in a Chinese prison on a case in which he was found not guilty. Now he wants compensation from the state
Zhang Yuhuan, 53, spent 27 years in prison after being sentenced to murder two boys, but the court has now found him innocent.
In 1993, a man was sentenced to death for allegedly killing neighboring children. Later the sentence was changed to life imprisonment. However, Zhang disagreed and appealed to a higher court.
He argued that he was not the killer and claimed to have been tortured by the police during interrogation. The court accepted the appeal, but the examination of the complaint in fact took place only in 2001 and ended not in favor of Zhang: the verdict remained in force.
The convict continued to vainly challenge his sentence until he reached the Supreme Court this year, which found him innocent.
