Genesis of Entrance Exams
My students as they step out of their high School they are bombarded with some insane and weird terminologies. JEE, NEET, CET, CAT, UPSC (a long and never ending list.) After sustaining all those injuries they head towards me to discuss what they actually mean. When they arrive they are confused, disgusted and nervous. Their minds are occupied with thousands of queries. To soothe the ruffled feathers and to give them a bit of oxygen I start with a simple story.
There was a King who had a beautiful daughter. Every Prince of the region had dreamt about her, had a desire to marry her. There was a deluge of proposals. The King was caught in a dilemma. He can accept only one and has to refuse the rest. But by refusing, he will be making them their foes. Any guess what will happen next in this story . As usual comes the witty Vizier of the King with a plan.
All the Princes were invited in a forest. Each one was allotted with 100 arrows. Time limit was up to sunset. If they kill a lion they would 1000 points, 500 for leopard, 300 for deer, 200 for bull and 50 for rabbit. Prince with maximum points will marry the Princess. Everyone agreed and thus King found a suitable match for her daughter and averted a calamity.
Now let us comeback to present situation. Take the example of IIT which has 10,000 seats for grab all over India. And for this there are 15,00,000 (1.5 million) aspirants. 10k students has to be accepted and 14,90,000 students has to be refused. Conditions worse than the King. So the modern day Vizier after reading the story formed an updated version of the plan called as ENTRANCE EXAM. A scientific way to say NO to 99% students without creating any trouble for themselves. And that is the crux of entrance exams.
Objects which are rare are always precious or fit into Law of Demand and Supply proposed by Alfred Marshall. In any condition when candidates are more than seats the concerned authority’s last resort is entrance exam. That’s why we don’t have entrance exams for BCom, Bsc or BA.
Inour next edition we will be discussing about
“How to crack Entrance Exams”.
The Grey Politics....
Indira, an elephant named after Indira Gandhi, died on August 11, 1983. On her demise the then Tokyo Governor Shunichi Suzuki paid tribute to the elephant saying, “She played a good role in Japan-India friendship for more than 30 years.” The present generation is not aware about this beautiful story of India and Japan due to Indira – The Elephant. The aftermath of World War II on Japan was devastating. The country witnessed poverty, unemployment and inflation. One day Pandit Nehru, who used to get innumerable letters and he used to read all such letters, was surprised to see one such letter from Japan. Being a Prime Minister, it was obvious to think that the letter could be from Japan Government for some aid as the country was totally devastated. But this letter was from school children of Japan. The children had requested something from Pandit Nehru in the letter. Nehru was amused to read their request and due to his love for children he cannot resist himself and replied them by writing a letter that he will try to fulfill their request. The Japanese school children had requested Nehru to gift them an elephant. Yes. Elephant. The reason being, during the war they had lost two elephants in the zoo, and now they were completely desolated because they had no elephants. Nehru immediately started finding an elephant and he came across a 15 year old elephant which was named after his daughter. He sent Indira to Japan as a gift to the children and wrote a letter to them saying “treat Indira as a gift not from me, but from the children of India to the children of Japan. The elephant is a noble animal, much loved in India and typical of India. It is wise, patient, strong and gentle. I hope all of us will develop these qualities.” Japan authorities sent Indira to Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo and was recognised as symbol of peace and friendship between Japan and India. After delivering the gift to children of Japan, Nehru wrote a meaningful letter to children in India saying “Grown-ups have a strange way of putting themselves in compartments and groups. They build barriers of religion, caste, colour, party, nation, province, language, customs and of rich and poor. Fortunately, children do not know much about these barriers, which separate. They play and work with each other and it is only when they grow up that they begin to learn about these barriers from their elders. I hope you will take a long time in growing up…”
Pandit Nehru was absolutely right about his views on Grown-ups. Saffron and Green are the communal colors of India. Grey too joined their club now. The recent cruel act of killing a pregnant wild elephant has triggered a nationwide outrage. After the news of the tragedy broke out, many of us felt doleful and there was a state of vexation all over the country. There was suddenly love for animals all over the nation. Caricatures of elephant spread all over the social media. A senior union cabinet minister deluded the country by tweeting that incident happened in Mallapuram district of Kerala. There was indirect communalisation of the incident by some of the dolts because Mallapuram has a Muslim majority population and then started the famous Hindu Muslim outrage all over the country. The fact is the incident happened at Palakkad and not at Mallapuram. Maneka Gandhi too expressed her views which didn’t go well with many people including Kerala CM. She is a top Animal Activist as well and must understand that such deliberate acts will show a route for perpetrators to escape.
The elephant had chewed a pineapple filled with explosive fire crackers in it which lead to her death. According to news reports, Mannarkkad divisional forest officer (DFO) Sunil Kumar stated that the firecracker-filled fruit could have been placed to kill crop-raiding wild boars. Investigations were on but with the communal spin in active mode, the judges and advocates of social media had already delivered the verdict.
This is a murder and the culprits must be booked at any cost. The only point is the density of the nation wide outrage. Imagine, instead of elephant it could have been a pregnant pig. None of us would have been cared to know what exactly lead to the death of pig because the issue would not attract national coverage. The problem is there is a tag of ‘cute’ attached to many animals and birds like elephant, cat, dogs, penguins etc and they get more love because their traits and appearances are adorable. Those animals who lack the ‘cute’ tag such as pigs and rats fall prey to human attack. In our daily life, we hit, threaten, torture and kill many animals right from rat to cows and elephant due to various reasons. But the murders never come to limelight. This particular case came to limelight because one forest officer shared a post on his Facebook page with a melodramatic narrative. The same officer would have resisted to post on Facebook the intentional killings of wild boars. No one would have known about this incident if we didn’t have have Facebook today. In villages many animals are tortured and killed because they destroy their crops. In Uttar Pradesh many stray cattles are tortured, beaten, locked up by farmers because the cattles destroy the crops and it causes loss to farmers. Even heifers are not spared. Ask any animal welfare activists or veterinary doctor and they will tell you that almost every stray cow in India has plastic and medical waste choked in their intestines. Even this is a muder by anonymous persons. It’s common practice among farmers living on the borders of Mannarkkad forests to implant pineapples with explosives like fire crackers to scare away or kill wild boars because they destroy the farms. Isn’t this a murder of wild boars? Why there is no national coverage in such cases? There was a famous case of Uttarakhand where a police horse Shaktiman died in a horrific way after weeks of struggling with a injury on its hind leg during a BJP protest in Dehradun. Accused BJP MLA was arrested and later was given bail. Many people celebrated when a female wild boar was killed by forest officers in Pathanamthitta district. There must be same love for all animals and there should not be any discrimination.
The wild animals reside and roam in their forest and they have all right to do so. It is we, the humans, who have encroached upon their forest all over the India in some or other way. Many smugglers have used forest as the place for their illicit activities. For instance, Veerappan, who used to do all smuggling activities from Sathyamangalam forest, was famous for killing elephants for ivory smuggling in addition to smuggling of sandalwoods and kidnapping of politicians for ransom. After his death in 2004, there was rise in number of tigers in the said forest. Because of his encroachment in the forest, the tigers were forced to take sojourn elsewhere. He had killed many police and forest officers. The irony of India is Vidya Rani, daughter of the man who had killed many elephants – Veerapan, has joined BJP recently and Maneka Gandhi who is a top animal activist is also in the same party. The pivotal issue is the heartless people who usurp the forest land in the name of development in collusion with politicians and bureaucrats and leave the animals homeless. We need to condemn not only the killing of elephant but also killing of wild boar and all other animals. Killing of elephant could be fortuitous but killing of wild boar is planned, calculated and intentional. But we also need to condemn and stop the communal politics that is happening around us due to the grey color.

*ME, FEMINISM & SOCIETY*
The world is changing and the way it worked is changing too. These changes have brought mostly positive effects and are bringing great impact not just over day to day decisions in households but also socio-political decisions.
Today the world has privilege of having choices and opportunities and platform for their voice to stand in front of the few powerful people in world. People have earned the freedom that they have always believed in, these has made possible for us to fight the Patriarchy and the Chauvinist residing spaces.
It was a high time that we embrace the differences amongst us and accept each other as we are, nakedly without any bygones. The shift in the society has brought us close and has made us believe that a problem is not individualistic rather it’s about the society, in this meantime we have broken barriers and have talked about the then taboo topic, which has been a game changer and has brought in many solutions and has given us power to stand united. Whenever I see all these changes and the crumbling of power centers and people being involved in governance, I feel proud to be the part of a revolutionary generation. Today there are many unfolds and people are engaging their time, power to resolve issues.
We since history have been Patriarchal society and have taught the boys to blend into the cast of so-called Men, to disdain the emotions and sympathy that makes us humans. We have been in a ride of Chauvinist mentality and have taken it too far to suppress women and to simply discredit them.
But what we ignore is the fact that Chauvinism and Patriarchy have also mentally harassed, emotionally destroyed men, they have also been the victim beyond that face of a macho man, but this does not change that women have been the victim of a world that was casted by dominancy of powerful men.
But today I can proudly say that we have managed to vocalise and that we are in a battle of Gender Equality and Women Rights. I truly feel the ongoing victory is because of the early Feminist activist and the people who supported and went against the lobby to support the cause. But I am conscious and worried about the path that some of us are walking on, is that our path? is that our ideology? is it our destiny?
Our fight and struggle is for Equality and Rights and not for Women embarrassing men or shaming them publicly, these incidents have been taking place and are usually been ignored and laughed at, but as a boy who is trying to figuring it out, who is trying to learn how the world functions and how it transforms, I feel that such practices are defaming our cause.
Here is how Men support and see Feminism;
We are Men and we do support feminism, but there is more to it! As we live our lives we have a baggage of generations of patriarchy and as we gain consciousness we stand for equality we stand against the Chauvinist culture, to put in simpler words we men have a welsh culture of Patriarchy and have low Emotional Quotient it’s a constant duel between the Ruling, arrogant, ignorant and toxic Patriarchy and budding, beautiful concept of Feminism that promises Change and blossom of Existence. There is a constant war of ideologies that’s not an easy job, on the one side you know what’s the right thing to do and on the other you also have the society that keeps an eye upon you which shall out rule you if you raise voice against them.
People are accepting Feminism and are working the way out, but the world is more complicated than that it’s just the newness of that concept and the small space that it has made in this world, we aren’t acknowledging the larger picture rather we have settled our cause into the urban areas and have forgot to reach up to the dense population living in rural areas. I believe this comfort has deviated us from our original ideology and we are shipping our focus towards the exploitation of Laws and systems that are meant to protect women, we no longer are in service of equality rather we are devoting our power for Women Supremacy.
The Movement of Feminism dates back to 1848 and was a historic moment in world history, that affected the lives Women in the world. Elizabeth Stanton 1902 was the one to come up with the ideology and strategies of the movement, mainly focusing over equality for Women. In this time American educator Margaret Sanger vocalise about the women rights and birth control.
There have been predominant waves of Feminism the 1st wave brought about Voting rights for women 2nd wave brought about liberalisation and female exposure to workplaces but alarming the 3rd wave has brought Man hating, Victimhood mentality and over sensitively provoked aggressive behaviours.
This journey of feminism, it has discovered many highs and lows but now the so-called feminist are getting insecure and are claiming/ demanding for an overpowering lifestyle ruling out men. The way I am seeing feminist movement going on is just like a powerful turbulent water stream gone rogue destroying the beautiful towns, where peace resides. I rather would like to believe that these radical personalities are not true feminists they are using the cause as a shelter to hide from their dark doings, in that intentful bitterness they have destroyed the essence and sanity of feminism.
Today the men are in a dilemma and in a hanging situation about their rights and respect in the society, as it seems the world is becoming intolerant for men, and in many instances for the women who don’t believe in the radical thoughts of women superiority. The power in hand of women have been used as weapon against men!
The irrational society and the media trials have been the major force in disabling the Men Rights, as soon as the Man is accused of Rape or Sexual Harassment, he has got nothing left! The society harasses his family, he loses his jobs, his reputation and even if he is found not guilty there is no irreversible effect and there is no reconciliation for his loss, whereas the fake victim gets fame. This is not an issue just because men are involved but also because of such fake cases the real ones are ignored or the justice is delayed. We need to understand that such fake allegations slows down the judiciary and also makes it helpless for the true victims. There are major problems for us to see, a large sum of cases aren’t even registered because of society pressure and we need to work over that. The most empowering movement was #MeToo there were some legit cases and justice was brought to them, it was a seeming less power but wasn’t used well, the movement got polluted by the fake allegations and that destroyed the credibility of the movement. As we speak of MeToo, there were no voids for men to come ahead to open up and have justice, the whole movement just made men wonder about their rights and position in society!
There are no laws which ensure men’s safety or laws that acknowledge that men can be victims of Sexual Harassment and Sexual Abuse. No incidences where a case is filed against a woman for abusing a man. There is no law for domestic abuse on men, and the statistics that show mere few percent of male being victim is incorrect because most of the cases get resolved by men paying a subsequent amount of money to the woman, rather that fake allegations on him.
The Pseudo-Feminist/ Radical Feminist have goon too far and have blurred of lines and diluted the terminologies that in turn has caused ease for misuse against the men. There are many such made up cases due to broadening the spectrum of Rape (indicating that a smallest action can be termed as rape if the victims say s0) this has decreased the effectivity of the particular terminology. These people have accused Men, gender in general to be rapist and have accused men’s Chivalry and Masculinity to be toxic! Fun fact: literally #KillallMen was the slogan in some marches.
Let’s talk about Men’s Rights– Men have high suicidal rate than women and a prominent cause is fake allegations; Every nine minutes a married man commits suicide in India due to alleged misuse of section 498a of IPC against them, taking the toll to around a whopping 64,000 every year, says a report.
Men have high chances of getting convicted than women. Men are more to be diagnosed with depression due to societal pressure.Women are more likely to get child’s custody over a divorce. Women earn more than men over the age of 35 years and the wage gap according to reports is due to the differences between the occupations opted generally by women. This are just some of the issues I have highlighted, and by doing so intend of accusing the opposite gender.
What I conclude is, we all need to acknowledge the differences between us, so as to welcome Equality. Rather that blindly believing that world is monotonous, we need to understand there are shades of everything and reason behind everything. There is a difference between Male and Female and that difference is beautiful and is to be embraced.
I hope we all march happily towards the era that embraces each of us, bearing the flag of humanity higher, lets watch out for everyone, work for equality talk about Men’s and Women’s Rights and most importantly we find a common ground.
