В художественной литературе каждого народа есть много достойных, почитаемых имен. Отмечая это, всегда выделяют несколько литераторов, которых называют основоположниками. В истории марийской литературы это в полной мере относится к Сергею Григорьевичу Чавайну.
21 июля 1978 года в центре города Йошкар-Олы, на пересечении бульвара Чавайна и улицы Советская был открыт памятник Сергею Григорьевичу Чавайну. Открытие монумента состоялось в год 90-летия основоположника марийской литературы, поэта и драматурга.
Работа над макетом скульптуры длилась очень долго, на разных этапах свои проекты предлагали разные художники, но их работы не увенчались успехом.
Затем за скульптуру взялся московский художник Борис Дюжев. Он приехал в Йошкар-Олу, изучил историю жизни Сергея Чавайна, побывал в его домике, встретился с родственниками, собрал необходимые фотографии, и уехал обратно в столицу, где затем работал над образом Чавайна. Впоследствии проект памятника был утвержден. Архитектором памятника был Павел Алексеевич Самсонов.
Скульптурная композиция однофигурна: на гранитном постаменте – фигура писателя с книгой в руке.
Брат-близнец йошкар-олинского памятника, отлитый с той же модели, установлен в поселке Морки. Вторая фигура по размерам чуть меньше столичной. Классик, присевший с книгой в левой руке, так же задумчиво смотрит на своих земляков.
Сергей Григорьевич Чавайн считается отцом-основателем марийской литературы. Сам он был писателем, драматургом и происходил из крестьянской семьи. Свой поэтический дар Чавайн (псевдоним Чавайн – богатырь Чавай) унаследовал от матери, которая любила сказания и песни. В 17 лет он написал стихотворение «Ото» (Роща), в последствии переведенное на 45 языков мира. Вершиной творчества С.Г. Чавайна стал классический роман «Элнет», и историческая драма «Акпатыр».
Жизнь писателя трагически оборвалась 11 ноября 1937 года, он был расстрелян. На долгие годы его имя было предано забвению, и после реабилитации Чавайна встал вопрос об установке памятника классику марийской литературы в Йошкар-Оле.
