Madagascar is on the verge of starvation due to climate

Farmers in the south of Madagascar have been unable to grow agricultural products in their fields for more than three years. This has led to the fact that today at least 1.6 million people in Madagascar need international assistance.

"Women, children and all family members eat cacti or locusts to weather the drought. Severe malnutrition affects more than half a million children. This is happening in the country and region whose inhabitants are least to blame for climate change," said the UN spokesman.

“I have met families who told me that they had to sell all their personal belongings, down to the pots and pans, in order to buy a small amount of food, which obviously will not last long,” Sanogo said.

To date, donors have committed almost $ 120 million, but the revised appeal requires $ 231 million between January 2021 and May 2022.

Didier Ratsiraka died on March 28 at the age of 84.

Death occurred in the capital's military hospital, where he was sent on March 22 with a diagnosis of influenza. Doctors assured that his condition does not inspire any concern. However, on Sunday night, his health suddenly deteriorated.

No official cause of death has yet been announced.
