Promotion of Students’ Teamwork and Self Growth through a Simple Group Quiz Good day everyone! Today I am going to share to you a wonderful lesson that I gained from a unique experience during our class in Health. Last Tuesday, we did a group quiz in our Health subject but I’ll tell you it was not an ordinary group quiz. We were in the Health class but we also feel that we are on a Physical Education class. Our teacher was so clever that he had given us a slice of life lessons into our activity. We had a very good experience and I thank Sir Ivan for that. We usually start our class with stretching exercises and this is one of the things that makes this subject unique. So after the warmup, Sir Ivan asked as about our lesson last meeting and then started to discuss the lesson about the different classifications of drugs. When the lesson was finish, he asked us for some clarifications and then grouped us afterwards. We are 35 in our section so he grouped us into 6 groups with five members each. He did not tell us the mechanics or the rules of the group quiz yet but he already told us to review our notes. While we were reviewing, Sir Dale suddenly spoke and said, “Teamwork is the key guys! You must work as group!’’. I was seriously reading my notes at that time and I did not mind what he has said. Most of us did not take Sir Ivan’s words seriously and continued to study individually. When our short review ended, he then told us the mechanics of the group quiz. He said that the questions will be answer by only one person. Each group would be sending one member in front to answer one question each. Each member will answer 2 questions each. I was a little bit shocked because I thought it would be like the traditional group quiz wherein we all answer as a group. It was not much of a problem for me because I know I learned the lessons well but for some of my classmates who didn’t listen nor study, it was a little bit hard. In our group, only two of us listened and study very well the lesson and the reason didn’t take the lesson seriously. I knew right from the time sir Dale told us the mechanics I already knew we were at a disadvantage. So basically, I didn’t really expect much. We only scored 4/10 from the quiz, but I didn’t really blamed my classmates. I blamed myself because I was selfish and I wasn’t able to support my groupmates. The activity was quite a surprise not just because of the mechanics but also because of the realizations I got from it. Sir Dale’s purpose was not really to score us but to see how we act in a certain situation. I remember when Sir Dale said when we were reviewing that teamwork is the key, he meant that we need to help each other. The individual answers was meant to test if our teamwork worked and if every student can stand alone on their own. The primary lesson that I obtained from the activity was obviously about the different classifications of drugs. The other knowledge that I got was a life lesson that we need to help each other for us to grow individually just like when a drug dependent individual is trying to change, he needs the support of the people around him to succeed. On the other hand, as an individual, you should not always depend on other people, you also need to urge yourself to learn or change.
