Secret benefits of coffee you may want to know - IOL
Moderate coffee drinking is thought to have a variety of health benefits and may help prevent several chronic diseases.
By Viwe Ndongeni-Ntlebi2h ago For most of us, coffee is an essential part of our day. It helps us through our hectic morning routines, warms us as we share precious moments with friends and, when needed, gives us an extra kick of energy. But is there more to this much-loved beverage? Catherine Clark, the owner and founder of The Harvest Table, says coffee received a bad rap for years, but there is finally some good news for coffee connoisseurs. Studies are now showing that you could be getting more from your favourite beverage than you thought. Moderate coffee drinking (not more than four cups a day) is now thought to actually have a variety of health benefits, as your morning cup of joe is in fact packed with healthy substances that are safeguarding your body from several chronic diseases, she says. Clarks top four reasons why coffee might be one of the most beneficial beverages on the planet: 1. Increases energy The active ingredient in coffee that gives vooma is caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to temporarily improve mood, reaction time, memory, vigilance and general brain function. In other words, it boosts your energy levels and gets you moving fast. It takes around 45 minutes for your body to absorb caffeine and the effects peak for anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours. Caffeine is absorbed in the gut and dissolved in the bodys water and fat molecules. It is able to cross into the brain, but fibre or food in the gut can slow the effects of the caffeine peak. If you are looking for a quick caffeine fix, having your coffee on an empty stomach is the way to go. 2. Burns fat Can coffee really support weight loss? The simple answer is yes. Caffeine, partly due to its stimulant effect on the central nervous system, raises metabolism by up to 11% and causes the body to send signals to the fat cells to break down excess fat. Of course, releasing fatty acids into your blood will not help you lose fat unless you are burning more calories than you consume, so, if you are watching your weight, have your morning fix but opt for coffee without milk or sugar. 3. Source of essential nutrients Coffee is loaded with nutrients and is one of the best sources of antioxidants in the Western diet, outranking many fruits and vegetables. The high levels of antioxidants help to reduce internal inflammation and have been shown to be effective in guarding against conditions such as colon cancer, Alzheimers, heart disease and even Type 2 diabetes. 4. Boost physical performance Firing up with a coffee before a workout has also been shown to improve physical performance. Caffeine improves endurance levels and resistance to fatigue. Studies indicate that athletes have a more positive exercise experience when they exercised after a cup of coffee. With so many benefits, its hard not to be a coffee-lover! says Clark. For those who want to add more nutrition to their favourite caffeine fix, she recommends adding a collagen creamer to your morning cuppa instead of dairy. The collagen will provide your body with even more health benefits and will help to further reduce any inflammation and leaky gut issues, ease joint pain, improve liver health and increase metabolism. The combination of coffee and collagen not only tastes great but packs a punch in keeping you in optimal health.

Fresh-faced Foden helps Man City exorcise Champions League demons - News24
Manchester City set up a blockbuster Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain as Phil Foden's second-half winner sealed a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund.
At the fifth time of asking, Pep Guardiola has guided Manchester City to a Champions League semi-final as they saw off Borussia Dortmund and the demons of previous quarter-final disappointments on Wednesday. Attention will now turn to a semi-final clash with Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain that will be a meeting of two projects financed by Middle Eastern investment. But for all the money invested by City's Abu Dhabi owners, it was a product of the club's youth academy, Phil Foden, who came up with the goods as nerves frayed for Guardiola's men. Foden's 90th-minute strike in last week's first leg against Dortmund handed City a slender 2-1 lead to take to Germany. However, that was cancelled out by another burgeoning young English star when 17-year-old Jude Bellingham's first Champions League goal gave a Dortmund a 1-0 lead on the night and the advantage in the tie on away goals. As chances came and went before half-time, Guardiola would have been forgiven for having a fear of history repeating itself. City have bowed out on away goals twice in his previous four seasons, while a combination of controversial refereeing calls and defensive mistakes cost them in three successive quarter-final exits to Liverpool, Tottenham and Lyon. This time, though, City's luck turned as a Foden cross was handled by Emre Can inside the box and VAR did not intervene to overturn Spanish referee Carlos del Cerro Grande's decision. "This competition is nice but at the same time is so unfair because when you are out, it is judged a disaster when you play 11 months for the league, FA Cup, League Cup, for everything," said Guardiola, whose side remain on course for the first ever quadruple in English football history. "Today was a penalty with a hand and maybe could be not given. We were out against Tottenham (in 2019) for a hand by (Fernando) Llorente that was not given." 'A guy who never hides' A missed penalty also cost City in that tie against Tottenham, but this time Riyad Mahrez converted the spot-kick. Foden then took centre-stage with a powerful drive in off the inside of the post 15 minutes from time to guarantee City's place in the last four for just the second time in their history. By scoring, the 20-year-old also became just the second player under 21 to score in both legs of a Champions League quarter-final after Kylian Mbappe, who he will face in the semi-finals. "You have the feeling he is a guy who never hides," Guardiola said of Foden. "He always creates something. He is dynamic offensively, defensively and in the small spaces." Foden also provided what City needed as he is a fresh face, unburdened by previous Champions League failures. Ilkay Gundogan admitted the runaway Premier League leaders "were scared to lose something" in a slow start that allowed Dortmund to take the lead. The relief at turning round what could have been another nightmare European night was evident as Foden ran into the arms of Guardiola and was swamped by celebrating teammates after the second goal. "For the club, it is so important," said Guardiola, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss. "We cannot deny it. This competition is tough mentally. "You are working for 10 months and for one goal. One mistake, you are out."
