As fans of tabletop roleplaying games debate over what to do about Wizards of the Coasts new draft of the Open Gaming Licence for Dungeons & Dragons, the lack of goodwill might be thing that drives the most resentment between fans of D&D and the company moving forward.
What happened with Wizards of the Coast?
After years and years of rumours, whispers, fan outcry, and endless internet theories, Rares beloved Nintendo 64 first-person shooter, GoldenEye 007, is finally out on modern consoles. And while for many this is something to celebrate, these new ports arent quite as good as they could have been.
First, the good news: After 20+ years of waiting, GoldenEye is now fully playable on Xbox consoles and the Nintendo Switch. And regardless of everything else in this post, its still really nice to have easy access to this classic N64 game in 2023. Sure, emulation has always existed, but this is different. Now a random person with Game Pass, and no knowledge of ROMs and such, can easily download and play GoldenEye like any other modern video game. Thats cool. And it would be silly to ignore that, especially because up until today that just wasnt possible due to various rights holders not seeing eye-to-eye on letting this game exist on more platforms.
A big fighting game tournament, Genesis 9, took place from January 20-23 in San Jose, California. Top talent from around the world, including Super Smash Bros. competitors Leonardo MkLeo Lopez and Samuel Dabuz Buzby, gathered at the San Jose McEnery Convention Centre to play games like Guilty Gear Strive and Rivals of Aether. But for one Super Smash Bros. Melee pro, British player Elliot Frenzy Grossman, the Genesis 9 tournament started with an illegal taxi and, he claims, a near kidnapping.
Got tricked into an illegal taxi coming out of [the San Francisco International Airport] and nearly got kidnapped, Frenzy tweeted on January 19 with a picture of his scarred-up right hand. Jumped out of the car after seeing the police chase after the vehicle and very luckily only bruised and scraped my hand and back. In the hospital [right now], [but I have] no idea how anything works here [to be honest].
Cancellations, right? That really does seem to have been the New Years theme for the French publisher so far, with at least seven projects recently scrapped, while other big names seem to slip ever-further toward the distant horizon. Yet, until last year, the problematic multi-billion dollar company was known as one of the most reliable producers of hits, entertaining us with enormous projects like Assassins Creed, The Division, Watch Dogs, Just Dance, Rainbow Six, Far Cry, and more.
2022 did not go so well for Ubisoft, failing to ship big games, and not seeing expected sales on some that found shelves, with an expected half-billion dollar loss problems made even harder for tens of thousands of employees by CEO Yves Guillemots poor responses to years of crises, sexual abuse allegations, and alleged miserable working conditions. Now, as the company swings the axe like a berserker to try to turn around last years declining finances, is there more cause for hope?
Heres a line you probably didnt expect to read this year: Terminal Velocity, the classic 360-degree shooter from the 90s, is getting a re-release.
Terminal Reality, the original developers behind Terminal Velocity and its spiritual successors, Fury3 and Hellbender, have returned to update the original Terminal Velocity with some quality-of-life features for 2023.
Today Microsoft held its Developer Direct presentation, focusing on a number of new games coming to Xbox, PC, and Game Pass. We got a fresh look at some anticipated titles, as well as a neat little rhythmic surprise from the developers of The Evil Within. But enough chatter, lets get into what Microsoft showed off today.
