The nightmare Sergio Reguilon scenario facing Tottenham as Real Madrid set date for decision - Football.London
Tottenham only signed left-back Sergio Reguilon in the summer but they could face losing him depending on events at Real Madrid over the course of this summer
Tottenham's Sergio Reguilon plans could be thrown into chaos by Real Madrid. Reguilon joined Spurs on a deal worth around £25million from Real Madrid in the summer, joining as part of a double deal with Gareth Bale joining on a season-long loan. The left-back has impressed since his arrival, making 13 Premier League appearances and instantly installing himself as a regular under Jose Mourinho. But there is a clause in Reguilon's contract which has meant Spurs fans have seldom been able to sit comfortably when it comes to talk of his future. Real Madrid hold a buy-back clause which they can activate either this summer or next summer which would see Spurs make around £15million profit. Given Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane sanctioned Reguilon's exit, the clause hasn't been too much of a concern for Tottenham, but recent developments in the Spanish capital might change that. Zidane's side were stunned on Wednesday night by third-tier side Alcoyano, crashing out of the Copa del Rey at the Round of 32 stage after conceding the winner five minutes from time in extra-time and five minutes after the home side had gone down to 10 men. That surprise cup exit, coupled with the fact rivals Atletico Madrid look as though they will storm on to win the La Liga title, has left Zidane's future in a perilous position. Reguilon is said to be happy at Spurs (Image: Tottenham Hotspur FC/Tottenham Hotspur FC via Getty Images) Reports from Marca today suggest the Real Madrid board are not best pleased with the situation and that they will make a call on Zidane's future at the end of the season. The report claims that the board want to see whether Zidane can turn things around and pick up silverware, whether it's a comeback in the league or a Champions League title, though options for silverware are few and far between after defeat in the Spanish Supercopa semi-finals and the Copa del Rey defeat, both in the space of a week. Zidane is already in his second spell as manager of the club having returned in 2019 following his initial departure in 2018, but support for the Frenchman appears to be dwindling with the Spanish media seemingly in attack mode after the Alcoyano defeat. And that concerns Spurs because a new manager this summer could mean a chance of stance on Reguilon, particularly with veteran full-back Marcelo struggling for form at the Santiago Bernabeu. Tottenham fans ought to hope Zidane turns things around in the coming months so that, at the very least, they won't have to sweat over any change of heart at Real Madrid over the summer months.
Frank Lampard ready to smash Chelsea's transfer record as Jamie Carragher questions Havertz deal - Football.London
All the very latest Chelsea news, views and transfer rumours from football.london ahead of the Blues' FA Cup fourth round clash with Luton Town at Stamford Bridge this weekend
Here is your Chelsea morning digest for Thursday, January 21. Lampard can follow Arteta's lead Following Chelsea's defeat to Leicester City on Tuesday evening, head coach Frank Lampard is under a great deal of pressure. The 2-0 reverse in the Midlands was the Blues' fifth defeat in their last eight matches, meaning Lampard is, potentially, on the cusp of being axed by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. However, opposed to thinking about that, Lampard could take a leaf out of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta's book. The Gunners chief was in an identical position to the one Lampard is in right now less than a month ago, but he has transformed the north London club's fortunes with a few tweaks. Whether or not Lampard could follow suit remains to be seen. However, it is certainly an option the Blues boss may wish to consider. Click here to find out why. Carragher proven right about Havertz Less than three weeks ago, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher questioned the Blues' decision to spend £72million on signing Kai Havertz last summer. The Germany international, who is 22, joined Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen in the hope of adding a new attacking dimension to Frank Lampard's squad. However, Havertz's time at Stamford Bridge has not gone according to plan so far, scoring just one goal in the Premier League so far this season. Read More Related Articles Read More Related Articles With that in mind, it is fair to say that Carragher was spot on with his assessment when recently questioning whether or not the Blues had made the right decision to spend such a huge amount of money on securing his signature. Carragher said: "I look at Kai Havertz and wonder if Chelsea really needed to sign him last summer? "He is obviously a player of great potential, but it never works buying a player because he is so highly-rated, unless you have a predetermined idea where he will fit into the side." Click here to read the full story. Blues ready to smash transfer record Chelsea are ready to break their own transfer-record in an attempt to sign striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund this summer, according to reports. The Norway international, who has been in outstanding form for the Bundesliga club this season, is understood to be one of Lampard's top targets for the summer, should he still be in the Chelsea dugout by that stage. Haaland has a release clause in his contract of around £70million, but that will not become active until the summer of 2022, meaning Chelsea will have to pay a lot more than that if they are to land him this year. But with the striker considered as one of the very hottest talents in the world, Chelsea may be prepared to make their move.
What Granit Xhaka did after Aubameyang's goal as Thomas Partey shows what's in store for Arsenal - Football.London
The talking points from the Gunners' 3-0 victory over Newcastle in the Premier League
Aubameyang is back 45 minutes in and it looked as though it was going to be a familiar story for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this season. The Gunners striker had look bright in the first half, but there were two chances that had they fallen to him last campaign would surely have ended up in the back of the net. The weight of a one-month Premier League goal drought was starting to weigh heavy on the 32-year-old's shoulders. But like all great strikers when a chance came to him at the start of the second period, Aubameyang put the past behind him and finished emphatically in the present. There have been a number of contributing factors to the Arsenal skipper's poor form in front of goal this season. Primarily a lack of service had been the issue, but with the introduction of Emile Smith Rowe into the side chances begun falling to Gabon international that he simply wasn't able to take. But now with two goals against Newcastle he has three in three matches, and before his game was ended by a frantic race to the dressing room, Aubameyang was starting to show some of the quality we always knew he had. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang celebrates scoring his opener against Newcastle (Photo by Shaun Botterill/Getty Images) Speaking after the game Mikel Arteta revealed how happy the sudden turnaround in form had made him. "That's what he's done through his career. Mentally you have to be really strong to do that," said the Spaniard. "He's come out a really difficult period, we missed his goals a lot and today he's scored two and contributed to the team to win which is exactly what we need. I'm really pleased with him." The Arsenal boss' sentiment were echoed by the players on the pitch who mobbed Aubameyang after his cool left-footed finish open the scoring. Arsenal celebrate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's opening goal against Newcastle. (Photo by SHAUN BOTTERILL/POOL/AFP via Getty Images) That was of course until Granit Xhaka came over and reminded the players of the new Premier League protocols that allow players to man-mark at corners, but not to be within two meters of each other to celebrate. Cue a hilarious celebration from the Arsenal team that treated the authorities' demands on the players with the seriousness they deserve. Partey shows what is to come For much of this season Arsenal's problem when building the ball out from the back has been a slow, methodical build up in transition from attack to defence. Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny and Dani Ceballos are all tidy on the ball, but hold onto it for far too long before releasing the Gunners on their way forward. Against Newcastle though something was very different. What had changed? The presence of Thomas Partey. Thomas Partey made his first start since December against Newcastle (Photo by Catherine Ivill/Getty Images) The Ghanaian has completed 90 minutes just twice since his deadline day arrival from Atletico Madrid and as a result Arsenal have only been able to peer over the fence at the true talent the midfielder possesses. As he picked the ball up on the edge of the Arsenal box after a poor Jonjo Shelvey corner, Partey immediately picked his head up and with a swing of his right boot was able to set free Aubameyang down the left. The Gabon striker did the rest and the blink of an eye the Gunners were 1-0 up. Read More Related Articles Read More Related Articles It was more or less the same case for the second as Partey sought to use his undervalued passing ability to get Mikel Arteta's side moving in quick transition while Newcastle were stretched. There is so much to like about the limited football we've seen from the Ghanaian so far, but what's best is that there is still so much more to come. Speaking after the game, Arteta revealed what more he can offer. Read More Related Articles Read More Related Articles "He can do that technically and is more than capable of doing that," he said of Partey's passing capabilities. "He's great in some transition moments as well and it would take him some time to understand a different way of thinking or doing with the previous team he was involved in but he has all the characteristics to make us better, for sure." A more managed return to fitness after the rushed return against Tottenham meant that Partey had to be taken off around the hour mark. But if that's what he can do in 60 minutes, there's no imagining how much more he could achieve in 90. Smith Rowe steals the show Like with his fellow Hale Ender Bukayo Saka, it's getting to the point now where it is more noteworthy when Emile Smith Rowe doesn't have a good game. Since Boxing Day the only team who managed to keep the 20-year-old quiet were Crystal Palace. The fact that Arsenal failed to score that night is no coincidence. Smith Rowe's dangerous presence high up the pitch caused the midfield two of Newcastle all manner of problems as neither knew how exactly to pick him up. The panic that a player like that creates in opposition defences is palpable, but it's not just his movement off the ball. His quality on it sublime too. Smith Rowe has been excellent in recent weeks for Arsenal (Image: David Price/Arsenal FC via Getty Images) Since he came into the side only Bruno Fernandes has created more chances than the 20-year-old who grabbed all the attention from the Sky Sports' pundits on the night. "I actually spoke to the Swansea manager today because I knew I was going to speak to him and he managed him in the U17s World Cup that England won," said Jamie Carragher. "He said it was tough to get him in the team because he had Foden, he had Sancho - an abundance of talent, but he couldnt have spoken about a player any more highly. "How to deal with him, what a great lad he is, training-wise and his ability to run off the ball. Read More Related Articles Read More Related Articles "I spoke about his actual abilities and compared him to Maddison or Grealish and he said, Yes, similar type of football, but his actual running off the ball - that was what he mentioned. Mikel Arteta has already revealed he thinks the Croydon De Bruyne can go as far as his former under-17 teammates, and with transfer talk relatively quiet around the Emirates it seems as though he may be given the chance to continue shining in the team. Relying on such a young player who has a poor injury record is a risk for the Gunners, but Smith Rowe is now regularly proving why it's one worth taking. Maitland-Niles misses out While other members of the current crop of youngsters are reaping the rewards of first team exposure, one of the elder statesmen of Hale End's golden generation was nowhere to be seen on the night. Ainsley Maitalnd-Niles couldn't even make the bench despite an injury to Dani Ceballos and the rotation of Hector Bellerin. The 23-year-old was admittedly poor in replacing Kieran Tierney for the draw with Crystal Palace, but to exile him form the 20-man squad entirely felt harsh from Arteta. Ainsley Maitland-Niles had a poor game against Crystal Palace. (Photo by ALASTAIR GRANT/POOL/AFP via Getty Images) But speaking after the game the Spaniard had little remorse for the versatile midfielder. "He needs to compete for his place like everybody else," said Arteta. "There's been a lot of players who have been left out of the squad and had less minutes. "Ainsley has played some minutes in the league, a lot of minutes in the Europa, the FA Cup, semi-finals and finals for us. It's about him, his performances and how much he wants to be in the team." Maitland-Niles seemed to destined to play a big part this season after starting the FA Cup semi-final and final last year, and putting in a man of the match performance in the Community Shield. That has not turned out to be the case, and the England international has just five starts in the Premier League for Arsenal this season. The Gunners rejected a bid for the 23-year-old over the summer and it is now getting to the point where if something similar comes in for him either this window or next, then it might be hard for them to do the same.
Sky Sports pundit noticed what Christian Pulisic and Timo Werner did in Chelsea's win vs Fulham - Football.London
Latest Chelsea news takes a closer look at Saturday's 1-0 win over Fulham where Christian Pulisic and Timo Werner both featured as the Blues got back on track
Christian Pulisic and Timo Werner must improve despite Chelsea's return to winning ways in the Premier League. That's according to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, who picked out the Blues duo following their 1-0 win over Fulham in the west London derby at Craven Cottage on Saturday evening. Whilst Werner ended his 12-game goal drought in last weekend's FA Cup third-round win over Morecambe, he wasted a glorious chance to make it 2-0 in injury time against Fulham. As for Pulisic, he's yet to hit top form in what has once again been an injury-disrupted season for the USA international. Interestingly, Pulisic played the whole 90 minutes, but Werner was named among the Chelsea substitutes and came on after 74 minutes for Olivier Giroud. But Redknapp is of the opinion that the Blues' recent signings are not doing enough to show head coach Frank Lampard that they are worthy of a starting place. "There's no doubt at all, its tough at times," Redknapp said. "He must spend hours in his dressing room at Cobham, looking at how hes gonna set the team out, the system he is gonna play, looking at how he can keep everyone happy. "It's the most difficult thing in the world when youre a manager, youre always gonna have players that arent playing, especially when you're not winning. "But the problem is, you dont wanna stop the young players developing as well. Read More Related Articles Read More Related Articles "Im sure if you're Mason Mount this summer, and he sees Ziyech coming in and the likes of Havertz, he thinks, where am I gonna fit in?', its difficult. "It can take a knock on your confidence, but right now, its the younger players leading the way. Redknapp's observation could leave Lampard with a major team selection decision for next week's clash against Leicester City as Pulisic's place may be at risk.
Mikel Arteta and Edu have already decided Arsenal's next three moves after free transfer - Football.London
The January transfer window will remain open for another fortnight as Arsenal look to address Mikel Arteta's first-team squad for the second half of the season
Arsenal are set to release Mesut Ozil on a free transfer. The Athletic have revealed that the 32-year-old and the Gunners have reached an agreement in principle to terminate his reported £350,000-a-week contract with immediate effect. As a result, not only will Ozil's seven-and-a-half-year career at Arsenal will come to an end but he's expected to travel to Fenerbahce this weekend and sign for his boyhood club. Once Ozil's exit is confirmed, the Gunners will most likely continue with their plans for the remainder of the transfer window. And there are three moves that manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu have already decided on. The first being trimming down the first-team squad even further with Sokratis one of many tipped to leave the Emirates Stadium before the window closes. Speaking in his press conference ahead of Arsenal's 4-0 win over West Brom, Arteta revealed that he was expecting a number of players to go out on loan this month. "Well, we have a large squad. We knew that," Arteta revealed. "A lot of things that should have happened in the summer we could not accomplish them for different reasons. "We need a player with creativity in the middle, we dont have that in the squad right now." Emi Buendia and Julian Brandt are just two of the names tipped to fill the creative void, while Arteta has also confirmed a new goalkeeper is on his shortlist.

Woodgate defends Mourinho style Jonathan Woodgate has defended Jose Mourinho amid criticism of the Spurs boss' negative style, stating that the players will not care about their approach as long as they are winning games. Spurs won their Carabao Cup semi-final against Brentford on Tuesday night, putting themselves in a position to end a 13-year trophy drought. And Woodgate says that the results Mourinho has achieved this season will negate any concerns about style. "Jose Mourinho takes the competition seriously," the former Tottenham defender told talkSPORT. "He won it four times, hes a serial winner and those Spurs boys need to start winning trophies. Theyve had chances over the years and theyve got another great chance now. "Their style is different, but they havent won anything under different managers, so they might win something under this manager and Jose Mourinho has won league titles and Champions Leagues all over the world. "Okay the style of football is not great, but theyre in a cup final and theyre only four points off the top of the table. Hes getting results, and thats the most important thing in football. Players want to win games, theyre not bothered how they play, in my view. "If I was a player now, all Id want to do is win, and I dont care how we win, no matter what style we play, as long as we win. Fans are different fans want to be entertained but at the end of the day what do they want to see: their team winning a trophy or not winning a trophy? "Mourinho has done it all over the world, he did it at Inter Milan and they won the European Cup, hes doing it at Spurs now and he will bring them success Thats why theyve brought him to Tottenham, he wins trophies." Sissoko has mostly sat alongside Pierre-Emile Hoibjerg in central midfield this season, but, as he explained afterwards, against Brentford, he was afforded more freedom to push higher up the pitch when Spurs had possession. "Of course I would like to score more goals and make more assists but it depends on the system we are going to play," he said after the game. "This time it was one system, without the ball I was playing as a number six, but with the ball I was higher, another eight with Tanguy [Ndombele]. "Thats why I could be in front and make that run when Reguilon crossed for me and I scored. Its easier to score when I get in the box than when I play as a number six." Mourinho's side qualified for the Carabao Cup final on Tuesday night. Afterwards, FC Spartak Moscow's Twitter account strangely got involved, asking: "What is Carabao Cup? Carling Cup only," when asked who they think will win this season's competition. After the original poster replied with a photo of Spurs' success against Chelsea 13 years ago, Spartak Moscow replied, "Even Birmingham City won this. Do grow up." Sky Sports pundits in full agreement about Jose Mourinho as Tottenham reach Carabao Cup final - Football.London
Darren Bent and Jamie Redknapp were speaking after Jose Mourinho's side booked their place in the Carabao Cup final with a 2-0 win over Brentford on Tuesday night
Former Tottenham Hotpsur duo Jamie Redknapp and Darren Bent are in agreement about Jose Mourinho. Spurs booked their place in the Carabao Cup final with a 2-0 win over Brentford on Tuesday night thanks to a goal in each half from Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-min. Mourinho's side will discover their opponents in the final - which doesn't take place until April - on Wednesday night as the two Manchester clubs meet at Old Trafford. Having gone 13 years without winning a trophy, Spurs are potentially just 90 minutes away from ending their long wait to lift a piece of silverware. If they are able to overcome one of the Manchester clubs, Bent is of the opinion that it will prove the decision to replace Mauricio Pochettino with Mourinho was the correct one. "This is why you bring in someone like Mourinho," Bent said on Sky Sports. "If they go on and win it, it will be validation that they made the right decision in letting Pochettino go and bringing in Mourinho. "When he got the job I always felt they would be a lot closer to winning a trophy because he's a serial winner, he understands what it takes and I think it's now festering onto the pitch with the players. "They've not won a trophy for a long time now, but when you've got a manager who is a serial winner that mentality is seeping into the players. "You can see now how hungry they are to win one." Furthermore, the Sky Sports pundit thinks Spurs - who have already beaten both Manchester clubs in the Premier League this season - are more than capable of ending their trophy drought come April. "I think to a certain extent fans right now get brainwashed because of getting into the Champions League, top four, what it means to the owners and the money it brings to the club," Redknapp added. "But when you look back on your career, you want to win trophies. For Spurs this is a massive statement. "Of course it's going to be difficult against two good sides, but they proved they can Man City with a really good performance. "To a certain extent, the good thing for them now is they have got so much to look forward to, so many good league games, they can put this to bed now and it's really something to look forward to. "Like Darren says, with the team they've got right now and they are so explosive up front they can beat anybody."

How Marine Covid tests will work Tottenham will face eighth-tier side Marine in the FA Cup third round on Sunday afternoon and the non-league club are having to take on the processes and procedures that a Premier League team would. Some Spurs supporters have shown concern about how the Covid testing will work for the Crosby-based side and whether Tottenham's regularly-tested players would be put in danger. However, the FA are providing testing for any Marine player or staff member who are set to be involved in the 'red zone' of the tie. The aforementioned zone includes the pitch, the tunnel, technical areas and changing rooms - which is limited to 105 people maximum during Premier League matches. Spurs handed Carabao Cup boost Tottenham take on Brentford in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday evening and the EFL have now confirmed a rule change ahead of the last four clubs coming head-to-head. The governing body has confirmed that teams in the semis will be able to make up to five substitutions, rather than the usual three changes. This will come as a boost for Spurs, especially given their squad depth in comparison to their Championship opponents. The move from the EFL comes amid fixture congestion this season following the delayed start to the campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic.
