image taken of the skies above Chiles Atacama Desert near the European Southern Observatorys (ESO) La Silla Observatory shows bright red streaks in the sky known as red sprites. Red sprites are large-scale electrical discharges that occur high above thunderstorm clouds, usually triggered by the discharges of positive lightning between an underlying thundercloud and the ground. However, the red sprites appear high in Earths atmosphere, sometimes 50-90 km in altitude.
A pair of space zombies show that dead stars are still capable of incredible physics.
When stars larger than the Sun meet their end, their hefty mass collapses, and this pushes subatomic particles past their quantum limits. It creates a neutron star, an object packed so densely that the mass of a star is stuffed into the diameter of a city. Sometimes, neutron stars come in pairs, orbiting one other just as they did as shining stars. They can then collide with extraordinary results. According to a new study published Wednesday in Nature, the cataclysmic explosion can take the shape of a perfect sphere.
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) continues to mesmerize with its latest views of the Universe.
Scientists caught unprecedented sights of star-making material when they directed a JWST instrument to look at a handful of nearby galaxies. Their data revealed billowing strands of dust too faint to see with other telescopes, as well as clusters of stars near galactic hearts and spurs where the dusty cocoons gestate new stars. These pretty visuals provide astronomers with the first steps to charting how stellar nurseries may influence the much grander shapes of their home galaxies.
