Update, January 14, 2021 (12:43 PM ET): The news below makes it seem like the Google/Fitbit deal is secured. However, the United States Justice Departments investigation into the acquisition is still ongoing. This raises doubts on whether the deal will sail on without any more troubles. The DOJ gave the following statement to a few publications (h/t Android Police): The Antitrust Divisions investigation of Googles acquisition of Fitbit remains ongoing. Although the Division has not reached a final decision about whether to pursue an enforcement action, the Division continues to investigate whether Googles acquisition of Fitbit may harm competition and consumers in the United States. The Division remains committed to conducting this review as thoroughly, efficiently, and expeditiously as possible. However, it appears the time limit for a decision with that ongoing investigation has passed. According to a Fitbit statement sent to Android Authority, the company felt comfortable moving forward with todays announcement regardless of the DOJ formalizing a decision on the purchase. Heres the Fitbit statement: We complied with the DOJs extensive review for the past 14 months, and the agreed upon waiting period expired without their objection. We continue to be in touch with them and were committed to answering any additional questions. We are confident this deal will increase competition in the highly crowded wearables market, and weve made commitments that we plan to implement globally. This essentially boils down to the DOJ having agreed to a time limit on delivering a decision on its antitrust investigation into this deal. Google asserts that that date has since passed, giving the company the authority to move forward with the purchase. The DOJ, however, says that it is still investigating. This is something a lawyer would need to weigh in on, but it seems like this deal isnt quite as done as Google and Fitbit say it is. Original article, January 14, 2021 (09:26 AM ET): Today, both Google and Fitbit formally announced the formers acquisition of the latter. This deal has been in the works for over a year now. It positions Fitbit as a Google company but independent in operation. This is not unlike how Nest had been for several years after its acquisition in 2014. In his letter, he emphasized that users health and wellness data wont be used for Google ads. He also explained that this is a binding commitment to make the deal happen, which means it is not a hollow promise. Likewise, Fitbit CEO and co-founder James Park penned a similar letter detailing the deal. In his statement, he used the exact same language as Osterloh to assure users that Google wont be using peoples health data for monetary gain. In his letter, Osterloh said that this deal is about devices, not data. This is probably the most important statement surrounding this acquisition. It heavily suggests that Google is looking to Fitbit to bolster its wearable hardware ambitions more than anything else. The wearable market has never seen a Google-branded device, even though the market is booming. There have long been rumors of a so-called Pixel Watch, but theyve never materialized. With the Wear OS platform stagnant, this Google Fitbit deal is an easy solution to the big Gs biggest problem in wearables: no hardware. Going forward, we can expect to see Assistant and other Google products appear on Fitbit devices. In his letter, Park makes it clear that many of the things you know and love about Fitbit will remain the same. However, its only a matter of time before Fitbit becomes more and more Google-ified. Well need to wait and see how that pans out.

• Samsung will reportedly focus on the base Galaxy S21 rather than its more expensive siblings.
• It has dedicated 60% of its production capacity to the vanilla model.
• It will also reportedly drop the pricing of the Galaxy S21 series in South Korea to below the Galaxy S20 line.

After years of steadily increasing the price of its flagships and pushing its higher-end models, Samsung may finally be turning a corner with the Galaxy S21 series. According to a report from Korea, the company is dropping the local pricing of its next flagship line considerably while betting on the most affordable contender to lead the line. ETNews reports that Samsung is hoping that the Galaxy S21 model will be its biggest seller. It will also apparently pour most of its factory resources into the base model, assigning 60% of its production capacity to the cheapest S21 device. Samsung is also said to be dropping the price of this model to 990,000 won (~$909) a fair decrease over the 1.248 million won (~$1,146) Galaxy S20. The Galaxy S21 Plus will also be cheaper in South Korea than the Galaxy S20 Plus and will be priced at 1.199 million won (~$1,104) according to the report. The Galaxy S21 Ultra will retail at 1.595 million won (~$1,469). Both models are set to be around 100,000 won cheaper than their predecessors. The reason behind the adjusted pricing and production push is to contain the iPhone 12 series and fill the gap in the market left by Huawei, per ETNews. Samsung may also be encouraged by the popularity of the Galaxy S20 FE an important device in the companys cheaper flagship smartphone push. One could argue that Samsungs new focus on its cheaper model highlights the irrelevance of the Plus and Ultra models, but both variants still have their own features to offer. Samsungs Ultra model will likely be the only option in the Galaxy S21 series with a 108MP camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and S Pen support. The Plus model will also boast a battery improvement to 4,800mAh, according to rumors. Both of these models also make the base Galaxy S21 an attractive offering if price, not features, is a chief concern. Its unclear if the company will drop the prices of the Galaxy S21 series in a similar manner across other global markets, but more will be revealed come the device lines launch on January 14, 2021.

• A YouTube channel has put out an unofficial review video for the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus.
• The video reveals a bunch of key specs and features of the flagship.

Galaxy S21 leaks have already wreaked havoc on Samsungs launch plans and just in case there was anything left to the imagination, this new video leak bares it all. The five-minute video has been published by a YouTube channel called Random Stuff 2. It might sound, well, random, but its got some 300,000 subscribers and was the source for a previous leak. Anyhow, the video shows the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus from head to toe. It confirms an almost bezel-less display with a centered punch-hole, something weve seen in the press renders leaked just yesterday. We also see the workings of the in-display fingerprint sensor and facial recognition. In terms of specs, the clip reveals the presence of a 64MP+12MP+12MP triple rear camera setup with 3x optical zoom. You can also feast your eyes on some camera samples in there. The video leak also reveals that the Galaxy S21 Plus will come with 8GB of RAM, 128GB/256GB storage options, Android 11 out-of-the-box, and of course, the Snapdragon 888 chipset. The YouTuber warns that this isnt an official review because the software is not fully baked yet, but says that the Galaxy S21 Plus will probably be the best phone of 2021. Well see about that. • Samsung could launch at least one Galaxy Note series phone next year.
• This could be the last Galaxy Note before Samsung puts the series out to pasture.
• The phone is expected to debut in the second half of 2021.

There might be at least one Galaxy Note next year before Samsung puts the series out to pasture. Korean media outlet ET News reports that Samsung will eventually merge the Galaxy S and Note lines by adding an S-Pen to the former. However, the company might still launch a Galaxy Note series phone, presumably the Galaxy Note 21, next year. This isnt the first were hearing of Samsung scrapping the Note series altogether. Just last week, another Korean business daily reported that Samsung will add the S-Pen to the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 3, discontinuing the Note series for good. The latest report also reiterates this information but quotes an official from the smartphone industry saying that Samsung will phases out the line with one last Note phone. It is likely that there will only be one model of the new Note series that is scheduled to be released in the second half of 2021, the unnamed industry insider told ET News. Samsung Electronics will look to focus more on foldable smartphones rather than its next Note series in the second half of 2021, the person added. The report goes on to suggest that Samsung plans to launch multiple foldable phones in 2021. But before that, the company is looking to conduct more research and development on ultra-thin glass as well as the digitizer. The latter facilitates S-Pen inputs and needs to be foldable in order to be implemented on the so-called Galaxy Z Fold 3. Rumors about Samsung ditching the Note series have been circulating since 2018. At one point, the company was reportedly debating a new name for the unified Galaxy S and Note line. While we havent heard any more rumors to that effect this year, the demise of the Note series seems certain. Samsung hasnt acknowledged these reports yet, but we might get an update from the company during the purported January launch event for the Galaxy S21 series. • Samsung has launched a new phone akin to the Galaxy Z Fold 2 but with a taller body.
• Its called the Samsung W21 5G and features a metallic gold finish.
• The foldable phone is only available in China right now.

Samsungs Galaxy Z Fold 2 is already a massive device to carry around, but the brand has now launched an even bigger version of the foldable phone. Called the Samsung W21 5G, the device is currently only available in China. No, its not the Chinese variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 as Samsung already sells that in the country. The only difference between the W21 5G and Z Fold 2 is a flashier design and a taller body. The shell of the W21 5G sports a metallic gold finish with a ribbed texture on the back panel. Its still covered by glass at the back, but were not sure if Samsung is using the same Gorilla Glass Victus it uses on the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The company has also attached a 7-layer nano-level optical film to the glass back to add to the phones polished gold appearance. Elsewhere, the Samsung W21 5G continues to carry a 7.6-inch main display and a 6.23-inch outer screen. Other specs of the phone are also identical to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, including the Snapdragon 865 Plus chip, 12GB RAM, 512GB storage, dual SIM slots, and Android 10. The phone is priced at 19,999 Chinese yuan (~$3,019) compared to the 17,000 Chinese yuan price of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 (~$2,566). Theres no word on a global launch for the device. • Xiaomi has announced its new 80W wireless charging tech.
• It promises to top-up a 4,000mAh battery in just 19 minutes.
• Theres no word on when the tech will become commercial, but we expect it on the next Mi flagships.

Xiaomi is stepping up its wireless charging game. The company has announced a new 80W wireless charging solution that promises to top-up a 4,000mAh battery in just 19 minutes. Need a quick charge? Xiaomi says you can get up to 50% in just over 8 minutes and 10% in just one minute. Xiaomis previous record for fast wireless charging was 50W introduced on the Mi 10 Ultra. When we tested the tech in our review of the phone, we came off pretty impressed and managed to have a 4,500mAh battery charge in just over 40 minutes. As such, were looking forward to what 80W charging can do on upcoming Xiaomi phones. A known tipster recently revealed that smartphones with 100W wireless charging could be a thing in 2021. Given that Xiaomi has already reached 80W, the goal of 100W wireless charging doesnt seem impossible. Xiaomi hasnt revealed any timeline for when we can expect to see the new wireless charging tech in action, but it would most likely showcase it on the next Mi flagships, aka the Mi 11 series, early next year. We havent tested this ourselves, but Oppo, one of the other major players using fast wired charging, itself admitted that its 125W charging solution brings down battery capacity to 80% after 800 charging cycles. Well have to wait and see how Xiaomi and other phone manufacturers address this issue.

Welcome to the 349th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week:

• Google re-branded its G Suite package to Google Workspace. Its functionally the same stuff. Google plans to include more collaborative features in the future and that apparently warranted a name change. Additionally, Google expanded pricing for small and large firms along with a few other changes. You can find out everything you need to know about it here.
• Google is adding some clearer account alert notifications this week in several of its apps in the near future. The purpose is to better communicate to people when something is actually really wrong versus when something is just kind of wrong.  The alerts are improving in a variety of Google apps. • The App Store and Google Play debacle continued this week in two separate stories. The first was a House report in the US that said Facebook, Google, Apple, Amazon, and other companies have monopoly power and should be separated out a bit to prevent actual monopolies. We highly recommend hitting the above link to read more about that because there is a lot of info. Additionally, Google chose to defer its 30% mandatory commission in India for the time being due to retaliation from Indian start-ups.
• Nvidia wants to tackle some of the issues with video calling. It launched a new developer platform, Nvidia Maxine, this week to help with that. The platform helps with things like eye correction, face alignment, and other small things to make video chatting a little better. It can also upscale 360p video to 720p pretty reliably, adds in virtual backgrounds, filters out background noise, and even translate language in real time. It could be a really big deal for video chat apps and services.
• Google Assistant had some big announcements this week. The first is making Google Assistant work better with smart displays by letting people buy things straight from them and some other neat features. Additionally, Google announced deeper integration with third party apps, kicking it off with partnerships with 30 apps, including popular ones like Discord and Walmart. 9th Dawn III Price: $9.99 9th Dawn III is a new open-world RPG. Its a fairly large game with a bunch of content, including over 1,400 items to collect, 270 unique enemies, and a ton of places to explore. For the most part, you dungeon crawl, collect gear, customize it, and go right back out to adventure again. The game adds in some stuff like fishing, cooking, gem collecting, and play Fyued (a card game) to round out the experience. The mechanics are easy enough to grasp for most people and the game has a lot more depth than it would seem from its graphics. Its a bit expensive at $9.99, but youll easily get your moneys worth if you finish it. Project Cheat Codes Price: Free / $1.99 Project Cheat Codes is something a bit different for gamers. It aims to be a one-stop-shop for video game cheat codes. The developer has two main goals. The first is to keep the installation size as small as possible and the app omits any flashy graphics specifically for that purpose. The other is to include as many cheat codes for as many games as possible. Its obviously a daunting effort but the app already has a decent and quickly growing collection of games. This one might be a pretty excellent gaming tool if the developer keeps at it. The premium version runs for $1.99 and we think thats fair. Sword Master Story Price: Free to play Sword Master Story came out of pre-registration this week and it already has a bunch of downloads. Its a hack-and-slash action RPG with some gacha mechanics. Players collect characters, level them up, and use them to fight off bad guys. At its core, its not all that different from most other gachas. There is a set number of characters and the upgrade paths are fairly similar to most others in the genre. However, some people seem to enjoy its mechanics and story even if the translations are a little rough. The game has a few bugs here and there but it has some promise if the developers keep up with it. InstaMocks Price: Free InstaMocks is a neat little app for screenshot enthusiasts. It lets you take screenshots and then mock them up inside of a device. People can use it to dress up their screenshots a bit. The app is mainly for developers, themers, bloggers, and similar types to make good looking screenshots for display on social media or the Play Store. Still, anybody can use the tool. It features over 40 devices, a built-in text editor, and you can work with up to 10 screenshots at once. Its also a free tool. Masketeers: Idle Has Fallen Price: Free to play Masketeers: Idle Has Fallen is the latest idle game in a genre crowded by 2020 releases. This one seems to be pretty good. Players collect masks to give them power and defeat bad guys. As you progress, your team can kill bad guys faster and earn more stuff at a faster pace. The combat portion of it is pretty neat even if its surrounded by familiar idle game ideas. Still, it feels a bit better and deeper than your standard idle experience. This is another one that has a lot of potential as long as the developers keep up with it. Thank you for reading! Weve known about it for months, but the Google Pixel 5 is finally official. Coming in at $699, the new Google flagship sacrifices a bit of power on paper to deliver a lower price, 5G, and flagship-level features in other areas. What if you want more value for money? Or maybe you simply want a world-class phone regardless of price? Join us as we look at some of the best Google Pixel 5 alternatives you can get your hands on. 1. OnePlus 8

• More powerful processor for advanced games and apps.
• Faster wired charging, but no wireless charging.
• Available in many major markets.

The OnePlus 8 isnt quite as big a leap as the OnePlus 7T was in the brands smartphone history, but youre still getting a good flagship phone for the same price as the Pixel 5 in the US ($700). It matches the Pixel device by packing 5G, a 90Hz OLED screen, and 128GB of base storage. OnePlus phone steps things up over the Google flagship by offering a more powerful Snapdragon 865 chipset, 30W wired charging (versus 18W charging), a slightly bigger battery, and higher resolution main and selfie cameras if you care about that. OnePlus also tends to offer three Android version updates to its flagships, in line with Google. If you want more raw power, the OnePlus 8 is an affordable alternative Googles phone does have a few upsides compared to the OnePlus 8 though, such as wireless charging and a reputation for better image quality. Its also worth noting that US carrier versions of the OnePlus device are the only variants to officially offer water resistance. Meanwhile, the Pixel 5 offers IP68 water and dust resistance. The OnePlus Nord is another Google Pixel 5 alternative worth checking out, especially as its ~$350 to ~$460 price tag means its well under the Google flagships price. You do miss out on wireless charging and an IP rating, but it packs six cameras (a case of quantity over quality though), a 90Hz OLED screen, and a Snapdragon 765G 5G processor. Sadly, its unavailable in the US, but those in Europe or looking to import could do far worse than OnePlus first budget phone in many years. Theres also the OnePlus 8T to consider if youre prepared to wait. Its expected to cost more than the Pixel 5 when it launches later this month, but shouldnt break the bank. 2. Google Pixel 4a 5G

• The Pixel 5G experience for $200 less.
• Same processor and dual rear camera setup, but lacking in other areas.
• Available in North America, Europe, and several other markets (not India)

The Pixel 4a 5G is arguably the most obvious and best Pixel 5 alternative, as it basically offers the core Pixel 5G experience without the flagship extras. That means youre not getting a 90Hz refresh rate, wireless charging, or water resistance. Googles cheaper 5G phone also skimps a little on battery size and RAM compared to the Pixel 5. The two phones still share plenty of features though, such as a Snapdragon 765G chipset, the same dual rear camera setup (12MP main plus 16MP ultra-wide), and Googles clean version of Android with three years of promised version updates. If you want to go even lower theres the Pixel 4a too, though youll be further sacrificing some crucial features like 5G and a second camera, and thats before you take into account the even weaker SoC. So, if you want a bit more than the Pixel 4a but dont want to splash out $700 on the Pixel 5, this is a great middle ground. 3. Google Pixel 4 series

• A more powerful chipset for games and performance in general.
• Motion Sense gestures and face unlock, but no fingerprint scanner.
• Missed India and several other markets due to use of Soli radar technology.

The Pixel 4 series is generally considered to be one of the more disappointing Pixel releases to date, with Google forgoing an ultra-wide lens and the standard Pixel 4 offering a tiny battery. Thats before you even consider the measly 64GB base storage, the less-than-stellar debut of Motion Sense, and the initially high price tags. Related:Google Pixel 4 XL revisited The good and bad In saying so, the Pixel 4 series is still worth considering at the right price, as it offers a more powerful chipset than the Pixel 5, a 90Hz OLED screen, and a dedicated zoom camera. Otherwise, the Pixel 5 brings back the fingerprint scanner, offers 5G, and an ultra-wide shooter in lieu of the telephoto camera. Decisions, decisions. The Pixel 4 series started at $800, but youre likely to find it at a cheaper price now that the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G are out. As the phones have been discontinued they wont be around for long, however. 4. Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

• Flagship power and a 120Hz OLED screen.
• Triple rear camera, wireless charging and water resistance too.
• Available in loads of markets.

Samsungs latest Galaxy S20 series phone might just be the best Samsung flagship phone of 2020. For starters, it comes in at just $700, making it $300 cheaper than the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy S20 and matching the Pixel 5. You do miss out on features compared to the S20 though, such as a glass back, 8K video recording, a high-resolution camera for zoom shots, and a QHD+ screen. Then again, the Galaxy S20 FE offers S20 series staples like a Snapdragon 865 or Exynos 990 chipset, water resistance, wireless charging, a flexible triple rear camera setup, and a 120Hz screen (at FHD+). Although the big downside here is that the device only offers 15W wired charging. So expect to wait a while before your phone is fully topped up. • Ticks many boxes for a flagship (powerful, water resistance, wireless charging)
• Apple tends to support its iPhones for roughly five years.
• Available in a wide variety of locales.

Apples iPhone 12 is around the corner, but the $700 iPhone 11 is still one of the better Google Pixel 5 alternatives if you need a phone right now. The two phones share features like water resistance, wireless charging, and a dual rear camera setup (main+ultra-wide as well). More on Apple:Everything we know about the Apple iPhone 12 series The iPhone 11 differs thanks to its use of the iOS platform in lieu of Android, while also offering a more powerful processor that dukes it out with the best Android chipsets. Otherwise, Apples device lacks a high refresh rate OLED panel and fingerprint unlock, so the choice might not be clear-cut for many. Like the idea of an iPhone but want to go even cheaper? Then the $400 iPhone SE 2020 is for you. It may have a dated design, LCD screen, and single rear camera, but it does bring wireless charging, water resistance, fingerprint unlock, and Apples flagship A13 Bionic processor. 6. Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro

• Flagship horsepower and a 144Hz LCD screen.
• Big battery but no wireless charging or water resistance.
• Readily available in the likes of Europe and Asia, but not North America.

In Europe or Asia? Then youve also got a great Pixel 5 alternative in the newly announced Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro. For 599 you get a phone with a high-end Snapdragon 865 processor, a 144Hz LCD screen, and a 5,000mAh battery with 33W charging. Xiaomis new release also packs a triple rear camera (108MP main, 13MP ultra-wide, and 5MP macro), 8K recording, and a 20MP selfie camera. This all makes for pretty impressive figures, but the jurys out on actual image quality right now. Its also not as easily available in the US compared to Googles phones. But if you want an ultra-fast phone that should last a while, this is worth considering. 7. Realme X50 Pro

• Snapdragon 865 processor and 90Hz OLED makes for a smooth combo.
• Super-fast wired charging tops you up in just over half an hour.
• No official US availability.

Realmes early 2020 phone is slightly cheaper than Googles new flagship in Europe, but it takes the Xiaomi approach of delivering impressive core specs compared to the Pixel 5. It ups the ante over the Google phone by offering a truly top-end processor, super-fast 65W wired charging, a flexible rear camera setup, and a versatile dual-selfie camera pairing. Read more:The best 5G phones you can buy right now The Realme X50 Pro also packs a 4,200mAh battery and a 90Hz OLED screen, as youd expect from higher-end 5G devices in 2020. The Pixel 5 enjoys wireless charging and water resistance, which are both lacking on Realmes phone. In addition, while Realmes Android skin is fairly clean and fluid, the company still tends to lag behind when it comes to update commitments. 8. LG Velvet

• Much like the Pixel 5, has a Snapdragon 765G, water resistance, and wireless charging.
• Also packs a headphone port and support for Dual Screen case.
• Available in many markets (including Europe and North America)

LG launched its flagship V60 earlier this year, but the Velvet is one of the more direct Google Pixel 5 alternatives out there. LGs later release matches up pretty well to Googles phone by virtue of it having the same chipset, water resistance, and wireless charging too. But the Velvet comes in at $100 cheaper in the US, and offers a slightly bigger battery and a headphone port too. An optional Dual Screen case also turns your LG phone into a foldable of sorts if you like the idea of that. Its not all great for the LG device though, as the Pixel series tends to trounce LG devices in terms of pure image quality, while the Velvets ultra-wide camera also sees a downgrade in theory over the Pixel 5 and previous LG phones. It also offers a 60Hz refresh rate compared to the 90Hz option on the new Pixel. Thats it for our look at the best Google Pixel 5 alternatives! Samsung is hosting the second part of its Unpacked event later today. The first installment of Galaxy Unpacked last month gave us the Galaxy Note 20 series, the Tab S7 line, Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Watch 3, and more. The one device that Samsung didnt talk about in detail was its new foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
