Blade Nzimande warns Covid-19 outbreaks among students could ‘fire up’ third wave - DispatchLIVE
Minister Blade Nzimande appealed to students and staff to adhere to Covid-19 regulations as the academic year got under way
Unfortunately, that would fire up the third wave, said Nzimande. He said 55 UP students had tested positive up until Wednesday. We are aggressively working on contact tracing with the help of the health department and have tested and screened a large number of students and staff over the last few days. Higher Health the agency mandated to safeguard student health and wellbeing is still screening and testing this week, for which results are still awaited. There is a probability that the number of positive cases may rise, Nzimande said in a statement. He said only UP had experienced a small cluster outbreak. However, there are pockets of positive cases in other universities and TVET colleges. These cases are not yet classified as cluster outbreaks. Nzimande said Higher Health, the heath department, National Institute for Communicable Diseases and the National Health Laboratory Services had formed investigation teams where pockets of infection had emerged at some institutions.
Discovery says everything in place to give 3 million members Covid-19 jabs ... 'depending on vaccine supply' - DispatchLIVE
Discovery CEO Adrian Gore said the scheme planned to vaccinate 3 million adult beneficiaries of Discovery-administered schemes, and would be ready to launch the programme on May 1 - if vaccine supply allowed.
Gore said Discovery was ready to to vaccinate its members in high volumes when the supply of vaccines becomes available from the health department. So far, he said they had identified members at highest risk who would be prioritised. Our segmentation approach is aligned with the national prioritisation framework, as guided by the ministerial advisory committee. Simply, this means that we know exactly who should receive the vaccine first, and we will communicate quickly with our scheme members to confirm their place in the rollout, contingent on vaccine supply, Gore explained. They plan to vaccinate 3 million adult beneficiaries of Discovery-administered schemes, and will be ready to launch the programme on May 1. This would be guided by the cabinets start date for private sector vaccination, and if vaccine supply allowed, Gore said. We have undertaken a considerable amount of actuarial and epidemiological modelling, and the implications are clear: in an ideal scenario, we should aim to vaccinate all high-risk groups by the end of June, including people over the age of 60 years and people living with multiple co-morbidities.

EskomSePush app available again for download after suspension lifted for unvetted Covid content - DispatchLIVE
Android users can once again download the popular load-shedding app EskomSePush after it had been suspended from Google Play Store.
Speaking to CapeTalk, EskomSePush co-founder Dan Wells said Google revealed that the app was actually suspended for sending Covid-19 data to its users without any authorisation from a government entity. Wells said the app did not meet Google's criteria to share public health information. Google just said that our app has been suspended because we're misleading our customers on the Play Store. We appealed that and subsequently, we found out that we're not allowed to share the Covid-19 updates that were added into the app about a year ago, he said. The updated app was reinstated on the Google Play Store and Wells said they have reached out to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) about getting authorisation to use its Covid-19 data. Hopefully we can add that back because we've got a lot of users on the app that check the data every day, he said.

In a performance full of drive and conviction by the rampaging Mamelodi Sundowns‚ a last-gasp goal by Peter Shalulile provided yet another win earned with championship quality by the defending titlists against Stellenbosch FC at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturd…
They went a goal down shortly after the half-hour mark when Augustine Dimgba opened the scoring (33rd) but they were not rattled as they came back to score two goals through Gaston Sirino (50th) and Shalulile (94th). Sundowns stuck to their guns despite the attacking performance of Stellenbosch where the likes of Ashley du Preez Leandro Mendieta and Dimgba asked some of the difficult questions. With this vitally important win Sundowns extended their lead at the top of the standings by four points though this was their first league outing in almost a month. Sundowns have also extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 24 matches in a streak where they have won 17 matches and drawn seven and they are currently on a four-match winning run in the league. The last time they suffered defeat was during their first match of the season in September where they lost 1-0 to Bloemfontein Celtic in the opening round of the MTN8. The loss to Celtic was the first match of the post-Pitso Mosimane coaching era and also the first for co-coaches Manqoba Mngqithi Steve Komphela and Rulani Mokwena.

The mighty new 467kW BMW M5 CS is a four-door supercar slayer - DispatchLIVE
BMW on Wednesday took the wraps off its brand new M5 CS - the most powerful car in BMW M history
The BMW M engineers also focused their efforts on honing the car's handling abilities and, as such, removed 70kg worth of kerb weight. Part of this was achieved by fitting an all-carbon-fibre bonnet as well as a special lightweight interior centre console that does without the usual storage tray. Added lightness aside, the M5 CS also sports retuned bearing springs at the front and rear axle and further refined damper control. The car's chassis has been adapted to the lower vehicle weight and increased traction offered by standard mixed-size Pirelli P Zero Corsa track tyres (275/35 front, 285/35 rear) that wrap around beautiful Gold Bronze 20inch M forged wheels with a Y-spoke design. Other standard features exclusive to the M5 CS include a stainless-steel sports exhaust system with four tailpipes and the firm's M Carbon ceramic brake package that ensures positive, fade-free retardation in even the most demanding driving conditions. While the kidney grille has also been finished in Gold Bronze, the L-shaped light tubes of the BMW Laser headlights now illuminate yellow instead of white when low beam, high beam or the Welcome Light is switched on a sneaky homage to the firm's GT racing cars.
Discovery of two new giant radio galaxies offers fresh insights into the universe - DispatchLIVE
SA telescope installation is helping gain a clearer understanding of the evolutionary pathways of galaxies
Whats new? Many galaxies have supermassive black holes in their midst. When large amounts of interstellar gas start to orbit and fall in towards the black hole, the black hole becomes active and huge amounts of energy are released from this region of the galaxy. In some active galaxies, charged particles interact with the strong magnetic fields near the black hole and release huge beams, or jets, of radio light. The radio jets of these so-called radio galaxies can be many times larger than the galaxy itself, and can extend vast distances into intergalactic space. Think of them like jets of water from a whales blowhole, a thin column extending into a cloudy plume at the end. These giant radio galaxies were found in a region of sky thats about four times the area of the full moon. Based on what astronomers now know about the density of giant radio galaxies in the sky, the probability of finding two of them in a region this size is extremely small only 0.0003%. So, its possible that giant radio galaxies those that emit the beams, or jets of light described above may actually be more common than previously thought.
Netcare launches special line to keep patients’ families informed - DispatchLIVE
Netcare has launched a dedicated support line to keep next of kin informed on the status of their loved ones who have been admitted to hospital after contracting Covid-19
The call centre will relay the inquiry to a dedicated Netcare representative either a social worker or patient liaison officer at the hospital where the patient is cared for, who will confirm with the patient that information on their status may be disclosed to the person calling. The representative will subsequently contact the family member by telephone within hours, with information on the patients status. In cases where the representative cannot facilitate direct contact between the patient and family, they will also relay any messages between them and provide updates daily during their hospital stay. Netcare has, since the start of the month, deployed 30 social workers to support patients and their families in non-clinical patient liaison roles, which it says enables health-care workers to focus solely on their clinical and nursing duties. Netcare hospitals are in the process of increasing the number of social workers.
